The clutch is broken? He’s going to fix the brakes here?

Cecelia was speechless.

If that were the case, he should have felt the brakes failing on the way down. Why not fix them on the flat ground below instead of stopping at the most dangerous part of the corner?

’For the head of the Engineering Department, he’s making such a rookie mistake...’

She was afraid that with one wrong move, Miller and the motorcycle would tumble off the edge. Not only would the Vaughn Group have to pay a huge sum for a work-related injury, but she would also witness a man die right in front of her. On top of that, the project would likely die with him.

No matter how she looked at it, this was a terrible place to fix a motorcycle. Cecelia tried to reason with him.

"If the brakes are out, let’s not ride it. We can push it past this corner. The road is much wider up ahead, so let’s fix it there. President Miller, don’t you think this spot is too dangerous?"

Miller pretended to fiddle with the motorcycle, listening to Cecelia’s words and thinking to himself:

’This damn woman is so hard to deal with! I’ve nearly worried myself bald plotting against her, and now at the last minute, she won’t even cooperate! She’s a tough one to kill!’

He had already told the lie, and even if it wasn’t a good one, Miller couldn’t be bothered to change it.

’Besides, there’s no one around, and it’s getting dark. How hard could it be for a big man like me to kill a weak little woman like her?’

Miller slowly stood up.

"I get the feeling you’re trying to avoid me. I just asked you to hold a phone for some light, and you’re making such a fuss. President Linden, you don’t think I have some kind of ulterior motive, do you?"

Before he said that, Cecelia had a vague sense of Miller’s ill intentions but couldn’t be sure.

Now, she was one hundred percent certain.

That sarcastic tone, the sinister look in his eyes illuminated by the phone’s flashlight...

Alarm bells screamed in Cecelia’s mind. She instinctively pressed herself closer to the rock wall, but her words were still conciliatory.

"Not at all, President Miller. I think you’ve misunderstood. It’s not that I won’t hold the phone for you, it’s just that the spot you’re in is so narrow. I’m afraid you’ll accidentally fall..."

"Afraid I’ll fall, or hoping I will? If I fall, you’ll be the biggest beneficiary of this project. You might even be able to use it to replace me as the head of the Engineering Department. You want me dead, don’t you?"

Cecelia: "!!"

’Does he even know what he’s saying?’

Her current position was Special Assistant to the President of the Grant Group, a far more prestigious role than his as a mere department head! Why would she cross corporate lines to plot against his life?

Cecelia frantically waved her hands. "No, no, no, President Miller..."

But Miller advanced on her, step by step.

"You’ve been here for so long, joking and laughing with everyone else, but you won’t even give me the time of day. What’s wrong? Am I so old and ugly I’m an eyesore to you?"

The path was too narrow; they were only three or four steps apart to begin with. Seeing Miller close in as he spoke, Cecelia quickly crouched down and grabbed a rock from the ground by her feet.

"You’ve been plotting this all day, just waiting for this moment, haven’t you?"

"I don’t know how I offended you, but we’ve known each other long enough for you to realize, President Miller, that I’m not a pushover. Take one more step, and we’re both going down."

’That bitch! Threatening me?’

He’d come this far; there was no reason to back down now. Miller’s eyes widened, and he was about to charge at Cecelia regardless of the consequences when, suddenly, Mr. Mason’s familiar voice drifted over.

"SOOIE! SOOIE, SOOIE, SOOIE!"

It was the customary sound the villagers used to call their pigs home. Mr. Mason was here!

"Mr. Mason! Mr. Mason!"

Cecelia shouted desperately. Immediately after, several bobbing beams of light from flashlights appeared around the corner.

Startled, Miller scrambled back two steps to the motorcycle.

Just as he got back, Mr. Mason, flashlight in hand, came around the bend with two other villagers.

Seeing the motorcycle stopped in the middle of the road with Cecelia and Miller standing beside it, they all looked confused.

"Everyone else is back. Why are you two still here? Why is the bike stopped here? It’s so dangerous, it’d be a disaster if it fell. Is something wrong?"

Miller was riding Mr. Mason’s motorcycle. Fearing he would come over and inspect it, exposing his lie, he quickly got on and started the engine.

"No big deal, the brakes were just a little loose. I stopped to tighten them and was just about to get going. What are you all doing out here?"

"Ah, Grandma King’s pig ran off. She’s been raising it for a year, planning to butcher it at the end of the year. It’d be a real loss if it got away. The whole village is out helping her look for it. You two have been out all day, you must be exhausted. Go on back and rest. We’ll head back as soon as we find it."

Finally seeing friendly faces, Cecelia refused to be alone with Miller again.

"The pig ran off? Grandma King must be worried sick. I’m not tired, Mr. Mason. I’ll help you look."

A moment later, Cecelia saw Grandma King standing by the side of the road.

Before she could go over and comfort her, Grandma King came scurrying toward her.

"Dear child, are you all right?"

Cecelia was taken aback. "Grandma, what do you mean by that?"

"As soon as you left this morning, I had this fluttering in my heart, a feeling that something bad was going to happen. I waited for you all day. When I finally heard the motorcycles, I went to the village entrance to look, but you and that man named Zhang were missing. I was afraid something had happened to you, so I let the pig out. I’m so glad you’re okay."

No wonder it was such a coincidence. Grandma King usually treated that pig like her own precious child. The only reason she would let it run out at this hour was for her sake.

Cecelia’s nose tingled, and she pulled Grandma King into a hug.

"Grandma, thank you."

Grandma King patted her on the back. "No need to thank me. You came to our village to do good things. You’re a good person, and I don’t want anyone to harm you."

Back in the village, Cecelia skipped dinner and went straight back to Grandma King’s house.

She never wanted to see that disgusting Miller again!

Although she had nearly lost her life at his hands today, Cecelia could only swallow this grievance in silence.

For one, she had no witnesses. For two, she had no physical evidence to prove Miller was trying to harm her. Speaking up would only start rumors, and it was better to let sleeping dogs lie.

’We won’t have to interact anymore anyway. I’ll just stay far away from him from now on.’

Before, Miller could at least catch a glimpse of Cecelia. But after their confrontation that day, she was completely out of his sight.

Cecelia spent her days at the road construction site, had her meals delivered, and went directly to Grandma King’s house after work.

With the project nearing its end, Miller was getting anxious, completely unable to get to her.

He had no choice but to message Gwen Morgan again.

He fabricated a story, claiming Cecelia was constantly fooling around with one man or another, leaving him no opportunity to get her alone. The only chance he had was to tamper with the food delivered to her, but he didn’t have the "right kind of drugs" for that.

Intent on getting rid of Cecelia, Gwen Morgan gave him her unconditional support.

"Why didn’t you tell me sooner? To make sure there’s no trace, I’ll have someone drive it over to you. It’ll be there by tomorrow afternoon at the latest. If you can’t get rid of her this time, you’ll have no more excuses, right?"

’Of course!’

With such strong support from Miss Morgan, Miller believed that even a pig could pull this off!

"It’ll definitely work this time. Miss Morgan, just wait for the good news!"

"Don’t be too obvious. If you leave any evidence behind, I can’t protect you."

"Understood. A fire will take care of everything afterward. Don’t worry, I won’t leave a single trace."
