As he spoke, the man produced a pack of tissues from out of nowhere.
"I won’t touch you. You can do it yourself."
Seeing the small pack of tissues he offered, and the long, elegant hands holding it, Amina was instantly reminded of Zeke Walton.
She looked up. The man was young and handsome, dressed respectably. ’He can’t be a bad person, can he?’
She took the pack of tissues and thanked him in a quiet voice.
The man looked her over with satisfaction, then took the opportunity to start a conversation.
"I’m the one who caused this, so you shouldn’t be thanking me. I’m sorry, I really didn’t do it on purpose. And just to add—and I don’t mean anything by it—you look so young. That outfit really suits you."
Amina was speechless.
His eyes then fell on the bracelet on Amina’s wrist.
"You like bracelets? What a coincidence, my family owns a jewelry store. Do you like gold necklaces, rings, or earrings? Let me know when you’re free. I’ll take you shopping and get you something, on me."
’He really is friends with a rich girl. You can tell he’s a rich kid just by looking at him.’
’He doesn’t even know me and he’s already offering to buy me gold jewelry?’
Amina sighed to herself. ’Rich people sure know how to sweet-talk.’ She shook her head.
"No, thank you. I’m not a big fan of them. I should get back upstairs."
With that, she dodged the man and scampered up the stairs.
The man exchanged a look with a few of his friends behind him and smiled, pleased with himself.
"I made my move first, so she’s mine. I don’t care what you guys think, you’ll have to wait until I’m done with her."
His friends laughed. "You sly bastard, you’re always the fastest! Go on, go on, get to it."
Amina had just reached the top of the stairs and was pulling out a tissue to wipe her clothes when the man followed her up.
"You said you don’t like gold jewelry, so what do you like? I’ll get you something else to make up for it. Don’t worry, you can name anything. As long as you like it, it’s yours."
Amina quickly stopped what she was doing and tugged at her clothes.
"Really, there’s no need. It’s not a big deal. Besides, these clothes aren’t even mine. I just wear them for work. When I’m done, I’ll take them off and wash them, and it’ll be fine."
"That makes me feel even worse. I hate being indebted to a girl. How about this? If you’re too shy to accept a gift, let me treat you to dinner. We can exchange contact information."
As he spoke, the man pulled his phone from his pocket, intending to exchange WeChat contacts, but Amina waved her hands dismissively.
"I don’t use my phone while I’m working, so I didn’t even bring it with me. Sorry."
"No problem, you can just tell me your WeChat ID or phone number."
"My account isn’t linked to my phone number, and I can’t quite remember my WeChat ID. I’m really sorry."
With that, Amina hurried over to another area to continue cleaning.
The man stared at the unyielding girl, speechless for a few seconds, then turned and went back downstairs.
Soon, the man and Simone Vaughn came strolling back upstairs, carrying a bottle of wine and a stemmed glass.
"Darling."
The moment Simone Vaughn saw Amina, she called out in a soft, sweet voice.
"I heard your clothes got wet, so I came up to check on you. Are you all right?"
’Are all rich people this polite, or is this guy just exceptionally so? He already apologized, and it really wasn’t a big deal. Why did he have to get Simone Vaughn involved?’
Amina insisted she was fine, but Simone Vaughn just poured her a glass of red wine.
"His name is Kay. He’s a bit shy, and he feels terrible about getting your clothes wet on his first visit here. He said you wouldn’t accept any compensation, so we’ll just have to treat you to a drink. That’s how we do things in Veridia. We clink glasses, and all is forgiven. Here, take it."
Back home, Amina had seen the men drink. She knew that many problems were solved over alcohol. But she never imagined that one day, it would be happening to her.
It wasn’t that she wouldn’t drink; it was that she had never had a single sip of alcohol in her entire life.
"Miss, I..."
"If you don’t drink, it means you haven’t forgiven him. He’ll be very upset."
"..."
Afraid she would refuse, Simone Vaughn quickly added, "It’s just wine, made from grapes. Think of it as grape juice. There’s barely any alcohol, it’s sweet, and you won’t get drunk, I promise. All my friends are here to see me today, so I’m in a great mood. Even if you do get a little tipsy, you can just go rest. Worst case, you can finish up tomorrow. I’ll still pay you the full amount. Don’t feel pressured."
After all those kind words, and with things having come to this, Amina felt she had no choice but to accept the glass.
"I’m really not mad, and I truly forgive you. I’ll just have a little sip, just to show I mean it. Is that okay?"
"Of course, of course! Cheers."
Kay hurriedly clinked glasses with her.
Amina raised the glass, intending to just take a sip, but Simone Vaughn’s finger pushed up on the bottom of her glass.
"That’s not nearly enough, darling. It’s rude. A little more. See? It’s sweet, isn’t it? Hey, you’re almost there, almost done. Take your time."
She only smiled and spoke after Amina had downed the entire glass.
"That’s more like it. You really are a beautiful, smart, and fun girl. No wonder Kay wants to be friends with you. Come on, let’s have another."
Amina: "Huh?"
"This second glass is a toast to the fate that brought you, me, and Kay together. You said you’re new to Veridia, with no friends or family here. From now on, Kay and I are your friends. You can’t refuse this. Refusing would mean you’re looking down on us."
She forced Amina to drink another glass, then immediately poured a third.
"This third glass is to my rebirth. Today is a special day for me. Everyone is here to wish me well. Amina, you’ll wish me a fresh start too, won’t you?"
Amina drank the third glass.
An entire bottle of red wine, finished by her alone in no more than two minutes.
Amina’s head was buzzing. An experienced drinker could tell from one look at her eyes that she was starting to feel it. Damien Vaughn exchanged a look with Kay, then made an excuse and took the bottle and glasses downstairs.
Kay moved closer to Amina.
"It’s such a great day and everyone’s celebrating. You don’t need to be in a rush to work. Come on, have a seat. Let’s talk."
He reached for Amina’s hand, but she instinctively recoiled, feeling a sense of shame.
She shook her head, trying hard to clear her mind.
"No, thank you. You should go back down and have fun with your friends. I have things to do tomorrow, so I need to finish cleaning this up as soon as I can."
"What kind of things? Food deliveries? Amina, you’re so young and beautiful. You could be doing anything, so why choose such a tough job? Is it because you’re new here and don’t know how to find work? Did you get tricked into this? How about I help you?"
Kay coaxed her patiently. "My company is looking for receptionists and administrative assistants. We have all sorts of openings for young, beautiful girls like you. The work is easy, respectable, and it pays well. Interested?"
Honestly, Amina had always dreamed of being a white-collar worker.
Watching the beautiful, cool, and confident career women on TV when she was a child had always been a huge source of fascination for her.
