"But I don’t have a degree."
"That’s fine. These jobs are all really simple; you’ll pick them up in no time. You’re so smart, how could you not learn? They just package it to look all high-end on the outside, but anyone in the know understands what’s what. If you’re really worried about people laughing at you, I can get you a fake degree. As long as you don’t say anything and I don’t say anything, nobody will ever know."
He seemed so enthusiastic, just as nice as Zeke Walton. Amina gradually let her guard down.
"Getting a fake certificate isn’t right, is it? I don’t want to lie and be on edge all the time. If a high school diploma is enough, I’m willing to give it a try."
This way, she could work a respectable job and earn money with dignity, while still having time to study for the adult college entrance exams.
Her ultimate dream was to become a chic and successful career woman.
Seeing she was interested in the topic, Kay reached for her hand again.
"Of course. Just tell me what you’re thinking, and I’ll help in any way I can. Come on, what are we doing just standing here? Let’s sit down and talk."
The two sat on the sofa, and Kay began to brag about everything under the sun—his company, the benefits, the fun events they’d held in previous years, and how satisfied the employees were.
At first, Amina was fascinated, as if a whole new world was opening up to her. But as he went on, her energy waned and her mind started to drift.
Her head was spinning with a low BUZZ, her limbs felt weak, and her eyelids grew heavy. She knew she was drunk.
Kay noticed her eyelids getting heavier and heavier. He was getting tired of talking anyway, so he leaned in closer with a smile.
"You don’t look so good. Are you sleepy? There’s a room over here where you can rest. Here, let me help you."
Amina knew if she didn’t lie down soon, she’d lose control completely. She glanced in the direction of the room.
"No, it’s fine. I can walk there myself."
Kay didn’t insist, but after just a few steps, she realized she couldn’t make it on her own.
Her legs were like jelly, her vision blurred, and the door to the room seemed impossibly far away.
Only then did Kay come over and support her by the arm.
"Look at you, always being so formal with me. I told you that you couldn’t manage."
The two entered the room. As the door closed, Kay suddenly swept her up into his arms and laid her on the bed.
The world spun, and Amina nearly threw up. But the first thing she did was pull the blanket over herself.
"Thank you. I really need to rest for a bit. Sorry to trouble you. You should go have fun."
"No rush. If I leave and something happens to you while you’re alone, there’ll be no one to look after you. I’ll stay with you until you fall asleep."
Kay sat on the edge of the bed, lowered his head, and gently smoothed her hair. He patted the blanket softly with his hand.
"Sleep now, sleep."
Amina felt a deep sense of shame being watched like this by a man as she tried to sleep, but her body wouldn’t obey her. She really couldn’t lift her eyelids.
Seeing her eyes finally close, Kay, who had been setting the stage for so long, finally let out a sigh of relief. He stood up from the bed and eagerly began unbuttoning his shirt.
’Damn it! Acting so pure! Made me waste all this time coaxing you! So annoying!’
’But, hehe, you’re mine now. Let’s see just how good that body is.’
With that, he yanked the blanket off Amina and impatiently started to undo her buttons.
’This girl is so young, so vibrant. Her skin is so smooth and full. Just looking at her neck makes my blood boil...’
「Meanwhile, with Zeke Walton.」
He had left promptly at 8 AM, driven an hour to the cemetery, and after paying respects to his elders and relatives, started back a little after 10 AM.
He would get back around noon, right at the peak of the lunch rush when orders flooded in. It was also Amina’s busiest time.
’She’s probably skipping lunch again.’ Zeke decided to go help her, so he called to ask where she was.
But during the one-hour drive, he called her seven or eight times, and Amina never answered.
If she couldn’t hear because she was riding her scooter, missing one or two calls would be understandable.
’But she has to look at her phone to accept orders. How could she not have seen that I’d called?’
Zeke found it strange. His growing frustration at being unable to reach her turned to anger, and he decided to go look for her at her apartment.
’That damn girl. If she’s ignoring my calls on purpose, just you wait and see how I’ll deal with you!’
He had just parted ways with his parents and was heading toward Amina’s place when, unexpectedly, Gwen Morgan called.
"Zeke, where are you?"
Zeke was agitated and in no mood for small talk.
"I’m busy right now. Whatever it is, we can talk another day."
"You... since when did you pick up Damien’s temper? I was calling to tell you something out of the goodness of my heart. Fine, if you don’t want to listen, then forget it!"
As she said that, she was about to hang up, but a sudden pang of panic hit Zeke, and he stopped her.
"Wait. Just say what you have to say. We’ve been old friends for years. You should know my temper by now, right?"
Gwen: "Hmph! If it weren’t for our years of friendship, I wouldn’t bother with this mess. Do you know where I am right now? Do you know who I just saw?"
Zeke: "I just finished paying respects to my grandparents. I’m not in a good mood. For crying out loud, can you just get to the point?"
Gwen: "..."
’If it wasn’t to get on his good side so he’d put in a good word for me with Damien Vaughn, I absolutely wouldn’t be bothering with his mess! What an attitude!’
"Have you been getting close with an ethnic minority girl who delivers food these past couple of days?"
Zeke’s heart dropped, and blood rushed to his head.
"How do you know?"
"How do I know?"
Gwen laughed at his question. "Besides you, everyone in our circle knows, okay? Have you forgotten who your ex is? You had such a nasty breakup with her. Did you really think she wouldn’t try to get revenge?"
Zeke’s face darkened, his fingers gripping the steering wheel tightly.
"Where is she now?"
Just as Kay was drooling over Amina’s beauty, his fingers about to undo the second button of her shirt, the door was kicked open with a loud BANG.
He whipped his head around, but before he could even see who it was, a foot slammed into his chest, sending him tumbling off the bed with a THUD.
"Who is it! Fuck! Who the fuck..."
He rolled over and sat up, about to fight back, when Zeke rushed him like a whirlwind and landed another kick squarely on his chest.
He howled in pain as Zeke stomped his foot down hard on the side of his face.
"It’s you? Shit! A worthless punk like you dares to go after my woman? You must have a death wish."
Kay never expected Zeke to show up at this moment, much less that he would stand up for this woman.
’She’s just some stupid delivery girl. Is she really worth all this?’
He cowered on the floor, terrified and in pain.
"Zeke, what are you doing? What do you mean, ’your woman’? I don’t understand."
"Still playing dumb with me? Weren’t you acting all high and mighty a second ago? You turn into a coward the moment you meet someone stronger than you?"
Zeke crouched down, yanked his face around, and gripped his chin fiercely.
"I’ve already called the police. To think you’d plot something like this with a brainless idiot like Simone Vaughn. You can both wait for death."
With that, he flung him aside, stood up, and went to carry Amina away.
His gaze fell on her clothes, and his brows furrowed involuntarily.
