They placed their hands together and pressed down on the official seal. Two bright red booklets were then handed to each of them.
"Congratulations, you are now officially husband and wife. Please, go and enjoy your happy married life. We wish you a lifetime of happiness and hope you have a beautiful baby soon. This is a small gift from the Civil Affairs Bureau."
They hadn’t managed to prepare any wedding candy for the staff, but they ended up receiving a red goodie bag from them instead.
Damien’s heart had never felt as steady, as grounded, or as full as it did today.
Candy, being a sensible girl, waited until they had left the main hall before she started bouncing and asking for their marriage certificate.
"Let me see! Let me see! So this is how you get married! Quick, let me see what the marriage certificate looks like!"
"Wow, Mommy and Daddy’s photo is so pretty! You two are such a perfect match. It’s too bad I couldn’t be in the picture too..."
Damien scooped her up with one arm and placed the goodie bag in her hand.
"Don’t be sad, Candy. It’s just a picture. Daddy will hire a photographer another day, and we can take as many photos as you want. Here. Have some wedding candy. You’re probably the first kid in the world to eat her own parents’ wedding candy."
Candy thought this "first" of hers was super interesting and a great honor, and she excitedly tore open the goodie bag.
She reached in and pulled out a few pieces of wedding candy. Along with them, her palm closed around a small, square packet.
The small packet had no picture or product description, only three simple English letters: SEX.
Candy was confused. "There’s candy like this? It’s so flat, I’ve never seen one. Daddy, hold the bag open. I’m going to put these back and eat this one first."
Saying that, she started to tear open the small packet, but Damien quickly snatched it out of her hand.
"Don’t open that. You can’t eat it."
Startled by him snatching it away, Candy froze for a second, then looked from him to Cecelia.
"Why can’t I open it? What is it? Why can’t I eat it? It feels soft, isn’t it candy?"
"It’s..."
Cecelia, who hadn’t expected the Civil Affairs Bureau to hand out family planning supplies, flushed with embarrassment.
Fearing Damien might say something outrageous, she quickly cut in to answer Candy.
"It’s a desiccant! Don’t you remember? When we used to buy cookies, there was always a little packet like this inside to keep them fresh."
But Candy wasn’t so easily fooled. She blinked her big, dark, innocent eyes.
"But the old desiccant packets were always white paper bags, and they had little round beads inside. You even opened one to show me, Mommy, remember? Why does today’s feel different?"
Cecelia said, "...That’s because today’s candy is wedding candy. The desiccants for wedding candy are just different."
Hearing this, Candy only grew more curious.
"Huh? There are really that many kinds of desiccants in the world? I promise I won’t put it in my mouth, Mommy. Please, just let me have a look."
Not only did Cecelia refuse, she rummaged through the goodie bag, pulled out all the similar packets, and stuffed them into Damien’s pants pocket.
"I’m so hungry. That breakfast wasn’t enough. Let’s go get something else to eat."
At the mention of getting something to eat, Candy finally forgot all about it.
Damien glanced at Cecelia’s flushed cheeks. Remembering how flustered she’d been, he couldn’t help but smile.
The three of them returned to the car. Damien drove, while Cecelia and Candy sat in the back.
Cecelia and Candy leaned against each other, their clear, bright voices discussing what to eat, what was tasty, what was healthy, and what was not. Damien glanced at the bright red marriage certificates on the center console. The happiness felt so unreal it made him feel like he was floating.
’A scene I’ve dreamed of for so long has actually come true.’
They pulled over at a random convenience store. Cecelia planned to just run in and grab a couple of things to placate Candy, but to her surprise, Damien followed her out.
In the time it took Cecelia to pick out two snacks, he had already clattered a huge pile of items onto the checkout counter.
Fruit baskets, milk, nutritional supplements—he had gotten a bit of everything.
"I was just distracting her so she’d stop asking about that... thing. Why did you take me so seriously? What’s all this for?"
Damien took her hand as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
"It’s our first day with the certificate. Shouldn’t we pay a visit to your family? This is for Rocky."
Cecelia was stunned once again.
’He’s actually thinking about visiting my family?’
’His grandfather just passed away. He must be feeling down. We should probably skip these fancy gestures.’
"No," Damien insisted.
"We have to follow the proper customs. I won’t have you lose face over this. What do your brother and sister-in-law like? Let’s go get them something."
Damien went on a shopping spree as if he were stocking a warehouse, not stopping until the trunk was completely full.
His heart was in the right place, and it wasn’t like the items were terribly expensive. Since they were really and truly married now, Cecelia didn’t stop him.
After they finished buying the gifts and got back in the car, Candy became thrilled all over again upon hearing they were going to her uncle’s house.
"That’s great! I was just about to ask you to take me to Uncle’s house! Auntie used to call me a bastard and a burden, and she was always hitting me. But now I have a mommy and a daddy, so let’s see what she dares to say now! Daddy, when we get there, can you show Auntie your marriage certificate?"
’Maybe even a little kid could tell that the last time was fake.’
’Otherwise, why didn’t she say anything like this the last time I went with them?’
Seeing his daughter looking so confident and smug, like she had finally turned the tables, Damien felt a pang of both heartache and guilt.
"Of course you can. You’re Daddy’s pride and joy. You can do anything you want."
"Yay! It’s so great to have a daddy! Hooray for Mommy and Daddy!"
Candy happily bounced up and threw her arms around his neck.
"Oh, right. When people get married, they’re supposed to take a picture with their marriage certificate and post it online. Daddy, why haven’t you? Or did you already post it and I just don’t know? Can I see your social media?"
In truth, the moment he’d received the certificate, Damien had been tempted to post about it. ’But other people don’t know that my grandfather just passed away. I do.’
’Choosing to get married to Cecelia at a time like this was already unfilial enough. To openly celebrate it on top of that...’
He didn’t have to say a word. Cecelia understood. She reached out and gently pushed Candy back into her seat.
"Not everyone likes doing silly, superficial things like that, and you can’t force your ideas on other people. Candy, you can’t just make demands of your father whenever you please."
Being scolded so sternly by her mother, Candy felt a little hurt.
"I wasn’t saying Daddy has to post it online to show off. I just thought that since the weather is so nice and we’re all so happy, you two should take a picture to remember the day. I was just afraid you were both too embarrassed to suggest it, so I said it for you..."
Damien glanced in the rearview mirror to see his daughter pouting, her pretty little face fallen with hurt. It made his heart ache.
"Candy’s right. We should take a picture to remember such a wonderful day. Come on, both of you, lean in close."
