Cecelia had assumed her brother was at work, so she was surprised to find both him and his wife at home when she arrived.
She hadn’t seen them in a long time. The last time she’d visited was right after her incident. Her brother had been constantly worried about her situation, so it was a surprise for him to see her again, especially with Damien Vaughn by her side.
Her brother hurriedly welcomed them into the house, serving them tea and water. Cecelia noticed at a glance that her brother’s leg had gotten much worse.
Before, he only had a slight limp. Now, he was practically dragging his leg as if he had suffered a severe injury.
"June, don’t worry about us. We’re not thirsty. Please, come sit down and rest. What happened to your leg?"
His wife had gone to the kitchen to wash some fruit for them. Hearing this, she came out holding the fruit with a woeful expression.
"I know you haven’t been back in a long time, and I probably shouldn’t be saying this, but we’re all family. We shouldn’t keep secrets from you..."
Her brother’s face hardened, and he glared at his wife.
"If you know you shouldn’t say it, then don’t!"
His wife wasn’t having any of it, and her voice immediately grew louder than his.
"What do you mean, ’don’t say it’? I told you Cecelia has Damien looking after her! Nothing is going to happen to her, so you don’t need to worry yourself sick. But you just wouldn’t listen! Your leg is already bad, and you can barely handle one job, yet you had to go and get a second one. And for what? To save money for her? So what’s the result? How much money did you save? Do you think Cecelia needs your pocket change? You didn’t earn any real money, and you ended up wrecking your leg like this! Rocky is still so young; have you even thought about how this family is supposed to survive?!"
Cecelia was shocked to hear this.
’My brother took on a second job for my sake! Is his leg like this now all because he’s overworked?’
"June, what’s really going on?"
"Don’t listen to your sister-in-law’s nonsense. I just bumped my leg a couple of days ago while riding my bike and went to work without getting a chance to rest. It’s a little swollen, but it’ll be fine after I rest today. Your sister-in-law just can’t stand to see me idle for a second. If I take one day off, she’ll nag me to death."
His wife was so angry she looked like she was about to jump up.
"I’m telling you, June Archer, can you speak with a shred of conscience? I may not have a job, but what day do I not stay home, washing your clothes, cooking your meals, and massaging your leg for you? I told you again and again not to work so much, but you refused to listen! And now you say I can’t stand to see you rest? Are we enemies, or are we husband and wife?"
"Alright, alright, Cecelia’s finally come for a visit after so long. Can you please stop talking so much?"
His wife glanced at Cecelia and swallowed the rest of her words.
"Fine, fine, I won’t say any more. I’ll go make dinner. You all can chat."
Her brother sat down, holding his leg.
But even after he was seated, his leg wouldn’t stop shaking.
Cecelia couldn’t shake the feeling that this was more than simple exhaustion, and she grew worried.
"I’m fine now; you don’t need to work yourself to the bone for me. Just take care of your own family, and please don’t push yourself so hard anymore. As for your leg, you can’t just ignore it. I’ll take you to the hospital for a check-up after dinner."
Her brother pressed down hard on his leg, trying to stop the trembling, and forced a smile.
"It’s really nothing. Don’t listen to your sister-in-law’s nonsense."
Damien Vaughn watched her brother’s actions, his heart aching for the man’s simple honesty.
He immediately took out his phone and called the hospital director.
Director: "From what you’re describing, it sounds like a problem with the nerves or the bone. It might require major surgery. You should have him come in for an examination as soon as possible."
"Can the surgery completely fix the problem so it won’t affect his walking in the future?"
"It’s hard to say. It really depends on his specific condition. But the hospital has recently acquired 3D printing technology, which can be very effective for a permanent cure. We recently had a patient with a very severe leg injury who we thought would need an amputation. He ended up making a full recovery and was discharged without any long-term effects."
"Alright then. I’ll arrange for him to come over as soon as possible."
After hanging up, Damien Vaughn said to her brother.
"I own the hospital, so you don’t need to pay for any medical expenses. Quit your job and focus on letting your leg heal."
’What? Damien Vaughn also owns a hospital?’
Her brother was stunned. He felt that his worrying about Cecelia had been completely unnecessary. At the same time, he was glad that Cecelia had found such a good man.
"It’s really not a big deal. And the hospital can’t be yours alone. If I go for free treatment, any discrepancy in the accounts will just end up coming out of your pocket. Your money doesn’t grow on trees. Besides, what if they can’t fix it and only make it worse..."
"Could it get any worse than it is now? If this continues, you might not be able to walk at all! When you’re paralyzed, are Rocky and I supposed to just starve?"
Hearing his polite refusals, his wife couldn’t help but run out from the kitchen again. She sat down in front of Cecelia and Damien, her eyes turning red.
"Cecelia, I’ll be honest with you both. I’m pregnant again. I was thinking our family’s situation was getting better, and I wanted to have a clever and cute daughter like Candy. But... your brother didn’t take today off to rest his leg. He’s trying to force me to go to the hospital for an abortion!"
"I know we’re not well-off, and the child will only suffer if it’s born into our family. But... this is our own flesh and blood!"
Cecelia knew her sister-in-law had wanted a daughter for a long time. Back when Cecelia lived with them, she’d often hear her complaining that Rocky was too lonely by himself and would have no one to help him when he grew up.
Now that she was finally pregnant, forcing her to get an abortion was indeed cruel. Besides, Cecelia herself was fundamentally against abortions.
Her parents had passed away early, leaving their family small. She deeply valued the fated connection one has with a child; otherwise, she would never have given birth to Candy.
"Why didn’t you tell me sooner? June, you’re in the wrong here. This is your own flesh and blood. Why would you get rid of a perfectly healthy baby?"
"You’re such a blabbermouth. The more I tell you not to say something, the more you say it."
Her brother shot his wife a resentful look before turning to Cecelia and explaining sheepishly.
"Your sister-in-law already said it. I’m not exactly a capable man. A child born into a family like ours would only suffer."
"What’s wrong with a family like yours? If a child is on the way, it’s fate. You should have the baby."
Damien Vaughn chimed in.
"If it really comes down to it, Cecelia and I are here. We can help raise the child."
His wife seemed to have been waiting for him to say just that.
The moment the words left Damien Vaughn’s lips, she burst into tears with a loud wail.
"I knew Cecelia wouldn’t abandon us! It’s so good to have a real sister! See? Wasn’t I right? When Rocky grows up, he and his sibling can support each other just like this!"
Her brother was still embarrassed. "That’s enough. Damien has his own big family to support and a huge company to run. How can you have the nerve to ask him to help raise our child?"
His wife retorted, "I’m not talking to you. I’m talking to Cecelia."
"Cecelia, your brother’s health is passable for now. He can make deliveries and barely support the family. But I’m worried that as he gets older, his leg will only get worse... I want to discuss something with you two. There’s a courier station outside our complex that’s up for sale, and I want to take it over."
