"We talked about it once," Brandon Jacobs said honestly, "but that was many years ago. You can’t possibly still be hung up on that, right?"
He didn’t understand what Elsa was so concerned about. Panicking, he raised a few fingers to swear an oath.
"If you don’t believe me, I’ll swear it. I work in the entertainment industry, so I deal with a lot of beautiful women every day. But I know exactly what kind of people they are and why they’re here, so I would never develop feelings for them. In all these years, I haven’t developed feelings for anyone..."
The more he tried to paint himself as pure and innocent, the colder Elsa’s gaze became.
"Damien is such a disappointment. He shouldn’t have sent you."
Brandon Jacobs was completely stunned. He reached for Elsa’s hand, but she pulled away.
Elsa’s aura was just too intimidating; he didn’t dare to force the issue.
"So what do you mean? Can you just be straight with me? I feel awful. We just did the most intimate thing two people can do, and now you’re dumping me? It feels like I’ve fallen from heaven straight into hell!"
Elsa pressed a hand to her forehead, speechless. ’This is exactly the kind of mess I was afraid of,’ she thought. And yet, here it was.
She took a moment to compose herself and gather her thoughts.
"I’m not going to be in the country for long. Besides, I’m a staunch believer in never getting married. I don’t want to get emotionally entangled with anyone. I don’t want to hurt anyone, and I don’t want to be hurt. So, I’m sorry. I don’t even know your name, but that’s not important. What’s important is... do you understand what I’m saying? All I want is a simple, purely physical..."
It dawned on Brandon Jacobs.
’No wonder she looked at me so indifferently when I dressed up for her today. No wonder she wanted to dump me. She’s dead set against marriage.’
At this point, Brandon Jacobs couldn’t blame anyone.
Damien Vaughn had warned him from the very beginning that this was just a game. He was the one who insisted on taking it seriously.
But understanding what Elsa meant didn’t make him feel any less miserable. He wanted to try and win her over.
"Elsa, I know a little about what you’ve been through, so I understand why you’re pessimistic about marriage, but..."
"No buts. Don’t try to convince me. I don’t want to discuss this with anyone. The more you say, the more I feel like we’re not on the same page. Your behavior tonight has seriously crossed a line for me. But you’re Damien’s good friend, so I won’t say any more. Please leave. If you keep this up, it’ll be harassment."
Elsa was not only cold but also impeccably logical, leaving no room for argument. Brandon Jacobs couldn’t sway her at all. He felt like he was going insane.
He’d finally gotten to see her, but it was still no use.
"No, no, no, Elsa, just let me finish."
Elsa wouldn’t listen. She had said her piece. With a cold SLAM, she shut the door.
Brandon Jacobs wanted to knock but didn’t dare. He paced anxiously in front of the door, wringing his hands.
Suddenly, a side window slid open, and Elsa’s face appeared.
"I’m sure you know who lives in this house. And I’m sure you know the consequences if her identity is exposed. If you act so recklessly again..."
Dejected, Brandon Jacobs drove back to the club.
Just as he reached the entrance, he ran into Wyatt Wynn, who was finally returning home.
Seeing him stumble out of the car reeking of alcohol, Wyatt Wynn couldn’t help but feel exasperated.
"Fuck, you’re this drunk and you still drove? Did you go see that woman? She rejected you again? Shit! Who the hell is she that you can’t let her go?"
"Come on, call her! Get her to come out! I’m dying to know what kind of goddess has you this wrapped around her finger."
Brandon Jacobs had shed all his pride. He listlessly told him the truth.
"You’re the only one who cares that I was drunk driving. She doesn’t give a damn if I live or die. For once, I wanted to be serious, and guess what? She doesn’t want to be. She just wants to play me. It’s hilarious, Wynn. A woman wants to play *me*. Isn’t that hilarious?"
At first, Wyatt Wynn had felt sorry for him for being strung along and wanted to help him get some payback. But hearing this, he burst out laughing.
"Brandon Jacobs, did you get kicked in the head? You’re acting like it’s the end of the world over *this*?"
’Isn’t it worth acting like it’s the end of the world?’ he thought. He wanted to give a woman a future, but she didn’t want it! He was Brandon Jacobs! She didn’t even care about becoming Mrs. Jacobs. Wasn’t that worth getting upset over?
Wyatt Wynn stared at him like he was an idiot.
"If you ask me, the woman’s got a clear head on her shoulders. That’s a good thing. If she wants to play, then play. You’re a grown man. It’s not like you can’t handle it, so what are you afraid of? Why think so much about the future? Even if she agreed to be with you right now, to be with you for life, could she really do it? And with your track record, can you guarantee you’ll love only her for the rest of your life and never stray?"
That one question stopped Brandon Jacobs in his tracks.
’It’s true,’ he thought. ’Even if Elsa agreed to be with me and we got married right away, could I guarantee I’d be faithful for life?’
Wyatt Wynn clapped him on the shoulder.
"A lifetime is a long time. You’d probably get tired of her after a while—it’s in a man’s nature. Don’t tell me you wouldn’t. People get divorced even after they’re married. No one can guarantee forever. And you’re acting like your life is over for something that hasn’t even happened? You really must’ve gotten kicked in the head."
They say a single conversation with a wise man is better than ten years of study. Brandon Jacobs now understood that profoundly.
Wyatt Wynn’s "player" speech was a complete wake-up call.
’Yeah. No one can guarantee the future. What the hell am I doing?’
"Shit! Why didn’t you tell me this sooner? I get it now!"
Brandon Jacobs was fully revived. He understood. He finally knew how to handle things with Elsa!
Normally, he would be asleep at this hour, but he was too excited to even think about sleeping. So, he didn’t. He drove straight to Damien Vaughn’s house.
Damien Vaughn had a habit of going for a run in the morning, but he had put it on hold for the past few days due to various matters.
Fortunately, things were slowly getting back to normal, and he had resumed his good habit.
He got up at 6 AM today, but to his surprise, when he opened the door, he found a re-energized Brandon Jacobs standing there.
Their eyes met. Seeing Brandon’s eager expression—despite the dark circles under his eyes that made him look like a panda and the stubble that had seemingly grown overnight—but still...
Damien Vaughn could guess with his eyes closed why he was here. With mixed feelings, he went to greet him.
"What are you doing here so early? Didn’t you sleep at all last night?"
"I’ve figured it out! I’ll do it your way! Vaughn, I’ll come see you in three days!"
Damien Vaughn: "..."
’He didn’t sleep all night just to think about this? He came all the way here at the crack of dawn just to say that one sentence? Has he lost his mind?’
"Brandon..."
It had been a long time since Damien Vaughn had called him that. Today, he felt a genuine pang of pity for him.
But Brandon Jacobs was ecstatic.
"Don’t try to talk me out of it. I’ve really come to terms with it. Elsa was right; everything I said and did yesterday was too childish. Please pass on my message to her. From now on, I’ll play along. I’m leaving."
