Three more days passed as Gwen Morgan waited anxiously.
She and Miller had staked out the location in advance, aiming a pair of high-powered binoculars at the villa’s entrance.
Just as Miller said, Damien Vaughn’s car appeared around eleven at night.
But Damien Vaughn was highly vigilant. He didn’t get out, driving straight into the garage.
The lights in the house were off, and the curtains were drawn. She couldn’t see a thing.
"Are they always this cautious?"
"There are exceptions, like last time. Miss Morgan, I’ve had to use every ounce of my patience trying to dig up clues for you."
’The nerve of him, trying to take credit?’
Gwen Morgan shot Miller an annoyed glare.
"What good is it just knowing he’s here? We still can’t get a picture of that woman’s face. Go think of a way to lure them out!"
"But..."
Miller didn’t dare.
He wasn’t sure if there were cameras by the door.
"Miss Morgan, I think we’d better not risk tipping them off. What if we screw up and get exposed? It’s not that I’m scared, but how about this? Let me come back during the day to survey the area and come up with a solid plan. That way, all this won’t be for nothing. How does that sound?"
Although Gwen Morgan was impatient, she had to admit Miller had a point.
After waiting this long, she could bear another few days.
But to her surprise, a breakthrough came much sooner than expected.
Sometimes, when you’re fixated on something and desperate for an answer, it remains elusive. The moment you stop thinking about it, things suddenly take a turn.
On the afternoon of the second day after their stakeout, Miller suddenly called her.
"Miss Morgan, big news, big news! I snuck back to the villa this afternoon to check out the area and ran into President Vaughn! There’s definitely more than one woman in that house, but the other one is older. I don’t know what they’re up to, but she seems to be injured. I’ll send you the photos."
As he spoke, a series of photos streamed onto Gwen Morgan’s phone.
With her heart pounding, Gwen Morgan opened the photos. She’d expected to see some breathtaking beauty in a series of scandalous, intimate moments with Damien Vaughn, but instead...
A van, a wheelchair, a patient.
The older woman was wearing an oxygen mask, and the scene looked just like a medical rescue. This...
’Who were they rescuing?’
Gwen Morgan zoomed in on the photo, trying to see the face of the woman in the oxygen mask, but it was too blurry. However, she got a clear view of her hand.
On the woman’s wrist was a uniquely designed diamond bracelet. Gwen Morgan was so agitated she almost threw her phone.
’Auntie! How is that possible? She was looking at Damien Vaughn’s mother! This...’
’Wasn’t she already dead? Didn’t Cecelia Archer push her down the stairs, killing her on the spot?’
’It’s been months. How could she suddenly appear?’
’But there’s no way I’m mistaken.’
That bracelet was a rare, one-of-a-kind piece from a famous European designer—a gift from Gwen Morgan herself.
Back then, to get into her good graces, she had gone to great lengths to acquire that bracelet. Mrs. Vaughn had always adored it.
’Oh my god.’ In an instant, countless thoughts and possibilities flashed through Gwen Morgan’s mind. And then, suddenly, she understood.
’She understood why someone as vengeful, cold, and arrogant as Damien Vaughn would still be willing to maintain that kind of relationship with Cecelia Archer after she had done such a vicious thing to his mother.’
’She understood why he hadn’t held a large, public funeral when his mother "died," and why he had seemed to move on so quickly. It was all because...’
’Does Cecelia Archer know about this? And who’s that other woman next to them?’
’Damien Vaughn kept this a secret from everyone, yet he allowed this one woman to be by his side. What is their relationship?’
Gwen Morgan grabbed her car keys and ran to her car while replying to Miller.
"Stop everything else. I want you to watch him like a hawk. Don’t miss a single move!"
Since being moved to this location, Elsa had been personally taking care of Mrs. Vaughn. Although her bodily functions were stable, she had fluid in her lungs that wouldn’t clear up, causing severe coughing fits and fevers from time to time.
Whenever she coughed, phlegm would get stuck in her throat. Paralyzed from the neck down, she couldn’t clear it on her own. A single slip-up could cause her to choke and stop breathing.
Initially, Elsa had been against taking her out of town for an invasive surgery to clear the fluid from her lungs. The risks were too high for a quadriplegic patient.
But today, while Elsa was out for a quick meal, her mother had nearly suffocated. She had no choice but to change her mind.
At this point, conservative treatment was just as risky as surgery. That being the case, surgery was the better option. It wasn’t as if someone could watch her twenty-four seven without ever leaving her side.
When Damien Vaughn heard his mother had almost suffocated, he rushed over from the company.
After hearing Elsa’s account, he immediately called a professor he knew in Corvane to schedule an appointment.
It just so happened the professor was free tomorrow. Given their situation—they couldn’t fly or take a high-speed train, and driving would take time—they had to leave immediately.
"I’ll drive. You take care of her in the car. We’ll go together."
The siblings quickly packed their mother’s things, brought along an oxygen tank and basic medical supplies, and moved her into the vehicle.
Only after getting in the car did Damien Vaughn have a moment to call Cecelia Archer.
"The people in Corvane responded about the financing. They just called and asked me to come over for a dinner meeting tonight, so I’m already on my way there. I’m not sure when I’ll be back. I’ll have to trouble you to look after things at the company for the next couple of days."
"Call me right away if anything comes up. Even if I don’t pick up, leave a message. I’ll call you back as soon as I see it."
Cecelia Archer had been at the company for several days and knew he was trying to secure funding to launch a few major projects, so she didn’t doubt Damien Vaughn’s words in the slightest.
"Okay, be careful then. Come back soon. I’ll be waiting for you at home."
Just as they hung up, Brandon Jacobs unexpectedly called.
"Vaughn, where are you? That promise to invest in my new branch—is that still on the table?"
’Wasn’t he all high and mighty back then, saying he didn’t want my money?’
’You can never trust a word a man says.’
But Damien Vaughn was in no mood to discuss this with him now.
"I have to go to Corvane for something urgent right now. We can talk when I get back."
Brandon Jacobs asked, "Corvane? For how many days? What for?"
"Work. What else would it be?" Damien Vaughn said irritably. "I’m driving, I don’t have time to talk. I’m hanging up."
As he was about to hang up, Brandon Jacobs stopped him.
"Hey, don’t hang up. So you’re driving, what’s the big deal? Isn’t your phone on Bluetooth? It’s not like it’s a bother. What’s wrong with talking for a bit? Are you that afraid of me pestering you for the investment? You’re not trying to back out of it, are you?"
’Damien Vaughn might not have a lot of cash in his personal accounts, but it’s more than enough to invest in a club. Would he really back out over something so small?’
"Brandon Jacobs, if you’re that bored, go hang out with Wyatt Wynn and the others. I don’t have time for you."
"You’re busy, sure, *you’re* so busy. So busy that a big-shot president has to drive himself on an out-of-town business trip. I mean, what do you even have drivers and assistants for? You..."
Brandon Jacobs was indeed bored. But more importantly, he was thinking about Elsa again and wanted to pry some information out of Damien.
