Ryan hadn’t expected the two of them to show up at the company so suddenly, and they were clearly here for Cecelia Archer.
’It’s obvious the Second Uncle told them. He’s deliberately stirring up trouble. This is outrageous!’
He quickly moved to stand in front of Cecelia.
"Mr. Bell, President Vaughn has gone to Corvane to discuss financing. He isn’t at the company right now. If you need something, you can call him directly..."
"You think I need you to tell me that?"
The Second Uncle had a fiery temper and shoved Ryan’s shoulder hard.
"If his damn phone was reachable, do you think we’d waste our time coming here? Cut the crap! Who’s that standing behind you? Tell her to come out!"
Ryan did his best to shield Cecelia.
"She’s not Cecelia Archer. She just bears a slight resemblance. Her name is Luna Linden."
"A slight resemblance? You think such a coincidence exists in this world? Get out of the way and let me see!"
Fearing Cecelia would be harmed, Ryan stood his ground and didn’t move.
"Mr. Bell, it’s working hours right now. President Vaughn won’t be happy if he finds out about this. Whatever you have to say, please wait until he returns. I’ll relay the message to him immediately and have him visit you. How does that sound?"
"Ryan! Out of respect for you being one of Damien’s longtime employees, I’m trying to be civil and not get physical. Don’t push me! When I tell you to move, you move! Is our family’s business something an assistant like you has any right to meddle in?"
Even though he was just an assistant, he still had his pride and dignity. Being cursed at with a finger pointed in his face hurt Ryan deeply.
But he couldn’t step aside. He just couldn’t.
"Mr. Bell..."
SMACK!
The Second Uncle raised his hand and slapped Ryan across the face.
"I tried to be nice, but you’re asking for it! Get the hell out of my way!"
"Mr. Bell!"
"Ryan!"
Cecelia grabbed his arm and pulled him back a step.
"Ryan, are you alright?"
The Second Uncle had used a lot of force. Five distinct red marks were now visible on Ryan’s fair face.
Cecelia felt as if the slap had landed on her own face. She turned and glared sternly at the Second Uncle.
"We live in a society governed by laws. An assistant is a professional hired through a formal process, with an employment contract, and is protected by labor laws and the legal system. In the corporate hierarchy, he is a subordinate, but as a person, he is not your inferior. What right do you have to strike him?"
The Second Uncle wasn’t very familiar with Cecelia. He had specifically found a photo of her.
He now took out his phone and compared the photo to her face.
"The resemblance is this uncanny and you’re still fucking denying it? Still saying you’re not Cecelia Archer? Who are you trying to fool? A murderer is standing here lecturing me about the law? Are you kidding me? Settle your own debts before you talk!"
"Big Brother, I’m sure of it, it’s her! Call the police! Get her arrested right now!"
As he was about to dial 911, Ryan darted forward again.
"Mr. Bell, she’s really not Cecelia Archer! If you don’t believe me, I can find old media interview reports for you to see! She’s from the Grant Group and was a huge help on the Windmount project. President Vaughn will be furious if he finds out you’ve treated her this way!"
"Haven’t you had enough of a beating?"
The Second Uncle refused to listen to his explanation, pointing viciously at Ryan’s nose.
"Don’t think I won’t hit you just because this stupid broad said a few words for you! Dare to say one more word, and I’ll rip your mouth off!"
Ryan: "...Mr. Bell, can you please be reasonable?"
"Reasonable my ass!"
Seeing Ryan’s persistence, the Second Uncle’s temper flared. He grabbed Ryan’s shirt and shoved him backward.
Caught off guard, Ryan couldn’t brace himself and was thrown against a desk in an instant.
With a loud THUD, his lower back slammed into the desk, scattering files all over the floor.
Cecelia couldn’t imagine how much pain Ryan was in. Seeing the man raise his fist to punch Ryan in the face, she rushed forward.
"Don’t you dare hit him! I should be the one calling the police! Are you insane?"
The Second Uncle backhanded her across the face.
"You dare curse at me? You stupid bitch, you don’t know what’s good for you! I’ll beat you too!"
"Big Brother, what are you standing there for? Come over and avenge your sister!"
The First Uncle had been watching coldly from the side. When he saw how bold Cecelia was—daring to try and pull his brother away—he gnashed his teeth and charged forward as well.
"You bitch, don’t think we won’t do anything to you just because you have Damien protecting you! If I don’t make you pay the debt you owe my sister today, then my last name isn’t Bell!"
He grabbed Cecelia by the throat and took two forceful steps back.
BANG! Cecelia’s head slammed against the wall.
"Speak! Are you Cecelia Archer? What kind of spell did you cast to make Damien so obsessed with you? Are you that good in bed? Maybe I should find a few men to try you out!"
Cecelia’s skin crawled with disgust at his words. She broke out in goosebumps.
"You dare! You’re disgusting! You’re the president of a major corporation, for God’s sake. I can’t believe such vile words could come from your mouth!"
"You think I need to be polite with scum like you? Talking back? It seems I’ve been too gentle with you!"
As he spoke, the First Uncle clenched his jaw and tightened his grip.
Although he was middle-aged, he was tall and powerfully built.
Cecelia felt like her neck was about to snap. She desperately tried to pry his hand away, but it wouldn’t budge.
Just as she felt she couldn’t breathe at all, certain she would die at his hands in the next second, a gust of wind seemed to sweep past, and the First Uncle was suddenly yanked away.
Cecelia’s legs gave out, and she collapsed into someone’s arms.
In her daze, she heard Ryan’s startled cry.
"President Vaughn! You’re finally back, President Vaughn!"
Cecelia was laid down in the private lounge of the president’s office.
By the time she came to, the First and Second Uncles had already been thrown out by Damien Vaughn.
Ryan, a dark red handprint on his face, was staring at her from the bedside. When he saw her eyes open, he shot to his feet in delighted relief.
"Miss Archer, you’re awake? You scared me to death. I thought... It’s good that you’re okay. It’s good. How are you feeling now?"
Tears instantly welled up in Cecelia’s eyes.
Such heartache. Such defeat.
Looking at the handprint on Ryan’s face, recalling the scene of them both being humiliated and verbally abused without a shred of dignity, she really wanted to grab Damien Vaughn and tear him to pieces!
Ryan’s relief was cut short when he saw her eyes, red-rimmed the moment they opened, begin to stream with tears. He was startled all over again.
"Why are you crying? Please don’t cry, Miss Archer. Are you in a lot of pain? Should I take you to the hospital? Please don’t cry. Tell me where it hurts."
"WAAAH!" Cecelia simply let go and began to sob her heart out.
"President Vaughn! President Vaughn, you have to come see this!"
Damien Vaughn, his back to them, extinguished the cigarette in his hand and slowly walked over.
So many things had happened recently, and he was profoundly aware of how much he had wronged Cecelia Archer.
Hiding the news of her mother’s death before had been so selfish, so absurd, but it was too late to say anything now.
The harm he had caused Cecelia was irreparable, and he was suffering as well.
He used to be immensely satisfied and proud of every decision he made, but now, every single thing he did was a mistake.
The words "I’m sorry" felt too hollow, too powerless. He watched Cecelia lying there, sobbing her heart out, and stood for a long time before sitting down with a vacant look in his eyes where Ryan had just been.
"Ryan, go draft a divorce agreement. Transfer all of the stocks, properties, and bank balances under my name to her."
