"President Vaughn?!"
In just one short hour, Ryan’s heart had been on such a rollercoaster he felt like he couldn’t take it anymore.
"How could you say something like that? You and Miss Archer have only been married for a few days! How could you get a divorce over something like this? Miss Archer isn’t mad at you. She’s so gentle and magnanimous. Just apologize to her properly and treat her better from now on. It doesn’t have to come to..."
Damien Vaughn’s gaze was unfocused, staring at nothing in particular.
"That’s enough. Go."
"President Vaughn!"
Damien Vaughn’s stern demeanor suddenly returned. He shot Ryan a sharp glare that scared him into silence.
’Maybe he just said it in a fit of anger. I should give the two of them some space and time to talk things out.’
Ryan backed out of the room.
Cecelia Archer cried for a long time. Her eyes ached, and so did her neck.
She could feel Damien Vaughn’s eyes on her the entire time. And since he had agreed to a divorce, it seemed pointless to keep crying. She gradually calmed down.
She had wiped her tears and snot all over Damien Vaughn’s expensive, beautiful pillow. She tossed the pillow to the floor, sat up, and stared at him with resentful eyes, not saying a word.
Damien Vaughn looked back at her. Cecelia couldn’t decipher the emotion in his eyes.
They stared at each other for who knows how long before Damien Vaughn suddenly unlocked Elsa’s phone and handed it to her.
"Watch this."
"Damien, Brandon, hello..."
Elsa’s fluent, pleasant English rang out clearly in the lounge.
At first, Cecelia stubbornly held her head high, refusing to look at the phone. But as she listened, her curiosity eventually got the better of her. She looked over and then took the phone in her hands.
Finally, she understood.
"You have a sister?"
Damien Vaughn let out a deep breath, leaned his head back, and rested wearily against the chair.
"Not anymore."
Not anymore... Those two simple words were filled with endless sorrow.
Cecelia could feel his pain.
The girl in the video was so vibrant and beautiful. It was truly saddening that she had chosen to end her own life at such a young age.
But!
People die every day in this world, and every person who dies is someone’s beloved. No matter how wonderful this girl was, to Cecelia, she was just a stranger. Was she supposed to unconditionally forgive Damien Vaughn just because his sister had passed away?
Cecelia locked the phone’s screen and set it aside.
"So, what’s the point of showing me this? To tell me that everything you’ve done recently was justifiable and that I’ve misunderstood you?"
"No." Damien Vaughn shook his head, his eyes closed.
His jawline was so sharp, making his features look more defined.
Only then did Cecelia realize he had lost weight—a lot of weight since before his business trip to Corvane.
Not only was his jawline sharper and his Adam’s apple more prominent, but even his cheeks were slightly sunken.
"I was wrong. Terribly wrong."
Damien Vaughn said, his voice weak.
"All this time, I’ve been too self-centered, never considering other people’s feelings. All I knew was that I liked you and wanted to keep you by my side, so I faked my mother’s death. I never considered your feelings or your situation. I was terribly wrong."
"You were right. If Elsa hadn’t been photographed, I would have hidden it from you for the rest of my life. I’m a scumbag."
Every word he said made sense. He had said everything she wanted to say herself, leaving Cecelia suddenly at a loss for words.
"So..."
"I agree to the divorce. I don’t deserve you. But..."
He suddenly opened his eyes again, his gaze firm as he looked at Cecelia.
"Don’t take Candy away. Don’t leave Veridia. I’ll give you everything I have. Let Candy be my daughter forever, okay?"
As he spoke, he actually choked up.
For a man as proud and powerful as an eagle to choke up in front of a woman was so shocking, so unbelievable, that Cecelia was completely stunned.
Damien Vaughn was on the verge of tears, but he wouldn’t allow himself to cry.
He choked back a sob and quickly stopped talking. Once his emotions had settled slightly, he took a deep breath and continued.
"I didn’t show you this video for you to understand me, pity me, or forgive me. I just wanted to show you that children who don’t feel loved by their parents are pitiful, just like Elsa. I used to think she just had a strange personality and was hard to get close to. Only now do I realize how much she suffered on her path to find love, torturing herself until she was a wreck. I don’t want Candy to become another Elsa."
"I promise you, I’ll never remarry and never have another child. I’ll pour all my love into her and her alone, okay?"
"Also. Let’s not act like we’re on bad terms in front of her. Even if we can’t be husband and wife, I still want to be friends with you. To be a solid pillar of support for Candy. Can we go pick her up together and have dinner with her? I promised her a long time ago, and she must have been looking forward to it for a long time."
Ryan was sitting restlessly at his desk, staring into space, when the door to the president’s office opened.
He quickly stood up and looked over.
President Vaughn’s eyes were red, and the tip of his nose was red. Miss Archer looked the same.
’They both cried?’
’Heavens! The day President Vaughn actually cries?’
He had been nervous and worried, but suddenly he felt a little like laughing.
"Ryan."
"Yes, President Vaughn."
"Go to the hospital to get your face checked out. Medical expenses will be reimbursed at ten times the cost. Go now."
"But what about you and Miss Archer..."
"We’re going to pick up Candy."
That’s great!
Ryan was so happy he could have jumped for joy. ’I knew they’d be fine!’
"Okay, I’ll go right now."
"Have you drafted the divorce agreement?"
"No, I knew we wouldn’t need that thing..."
"Come in tomorrow morning and draft it. If there’s anything you don’t understand, consult a lawyer. And remember to keep it confidential."
’What? They both cried, they’re going to pick up Candy together, and they’re still getting a divorce?’
The gates of the Grant Family estate slowly opened. Cecelia stood by the car while Damien Vaughn crouched at the entrance. Like a cheerful little rabbit, Candy shouted for her dad and threw herself into his arms.
"Daddy! Ah! You’re finally back! I missed you so much! I was about to go crazy missing you! Did you miss me?"
Damien Vaughn picked her up, spun her around twice, and gave her a couple of kisses.
"How could I not? Daddy was about to go crazy missing you too."
"Then let’s have kisses right now."
Candy gave him a couple of loud SMACKS on his cheek.
"Why didn’t you tell me you were coming back? I could have come with Mommy to pick you up! Huh? Daddy, why are you so skinny? You’ve lost a lot of weight. Is work really hard?"
His daughter’s chubby little hands cupped his face. Looking at her rosy cheeks, Damien Vaughn felt an indescribable sense of contentment, and the gloom that had shrouded him for days lifted just a little.
"It’s a little hard. But it’s all better as long as I can see my Candy."
"No!" Candy looked at his gaunt face, and suddenly her eyes reddened. Her lip trembled, and two streams of clear tears rolled down her cheeks.
"I don’t want Mommy and Daddy to have a hard time! You don’t have to earn so much money for me. I don’t want lots and lots of money! I just want our family to be together every day, with Mommy and Daddy with me every day! Daddy, can you promise me you won’t go on such long business trips anymore? When you’re gone, it’s so hard on Mommy. I don’t want either of you to have a hard time. Can we be a family and stay together forever, please?"
