If Claire hadn’t fabricated lies and stolen her identity to become Damien Vaughn’s girlfriend, Candy wouldn’t have been dismissed as an illegitimate child for so many years.
If she hadn’t falsely accused her of stealing, Cecelia wouldn’t have been hauled off to the police station and expelled from school.
As a once-trusted friend who had betrayed her, Cecelia Archer hated Claire Clark to her very core.
But no matter how deep her hatred, it was a personal matter. ’What is Damien Vaughn doing getting involved like this?’
The man and woman beside her were obviously middle-aged, judging by their clothes and posture. They must be Claire Clark’s parents.
’Take revenge on her, fine, but why bring her parents into it?’
Seeing the confusion on Cecelia Archer’s face, Damien Vaughn raised a hand, and a bodyguard immediately brought over two stools.
Damien Vaughn pulled Cecelia Archer down to sit beside him, crossed his legs, and stared at Claire Clark and her parents with a cold, grim expression.
"Let me tell you about this woman’s crimes."
"First, four years ago at Club DL, she destroyed the surveillance footage, eliminated the evidence, and stole your identity, causing Candy and me to lose so many years as father and daughter. Second, she slandered you with vicious rumors, which led to your expulsion from school. Third, she exploited my feelings and guilt toward you to become my girlfriend, defrauding me for four years. During that time, I spent over sixty million on her."
Cecelia Archer had already anticipated the first two points, so she wasn’t particularly shocked when Damien Vaughn listed them.
But when she heard the third, she couldn’t take it anymore.
’He was with her for four years and spent over sixty million on her?’
’And here I was, feeling awkward about accepting a twenty-thousand-dollar apartment from him! What was there to feel awkward about?’
’He’s obviously this generous with every woman!’
"Fourth..."
’There’s a fourth one?’
Damien Vaughn continued, "She tailed my mother and you to the hospital rooftop. Seizing the opportunity when you went downstairs first, she rushed out, pushed my mother off the building, and framed you for it."
What?
Cecelia Archer shot to her feet.
"Your mother was pushed by *her*? She was following me? Then why didn’t the hospital’s security cameras catch her?"
Damien Vaughn gestured to a bodyguard with his chin. Someone immediately stepped forward and removed the cloth covering Claire Clark’s eyes and mouth.
Claire Clark’s face was ashen. Covered in sweat, she stared at them, trembling uncontrollably.
"I... I... I just wasn’t thinking straight! I didn’t mean to! It was a moment of weakness! Damien, I’m sorry... For the sake of the four years I spent with you, please..."
Damien Vaughn cut her off. "A moment of weakness? A moment of weakness, yet you knew to steal a doctor’s white coat and a mask to disguise yourself as medical staff? A moment of weakness, yet your timing was so perfect that you were seen helping another patient downstairs, so flawlessly that even the police saw nothing amiss? If you can be this clever in a ’moment of weakness,’ just imagine how manipulative you must have been during the four years you so carefully deceived me."
"..."
Claire Clark was at a loss for words, able to do nothing but shake her head frantically.
"No! No! I really do love you! Damien, I only did it because I loved you so much... Please, just forgive me this one time, okay? Give me one last chance. I promise I’ll never do anything like this again. I’m begging you! Please!"
Damien Vaughn felt that Claire Clark was the biggest stain on his entire life.
The sight of her was so revolting he couldn’t stand to look at her for a second longer.
"Cecelia Archer, what do you think we should do with her?"
Cecelia Archer stared at Claire Clark, her teeth clenched in fury.
One second, two seconds, three seconds passed. Suddenly, she lunged at her.
"AHH!"
Claire Clark shrieked in terror and tried to scramble away on her knees, but Cecelia grabbed her with pinpoint accuracy.
SLAP! SLAP! SLAP! SLAP!
Cecelia Archer viciously slapped her across the face several times.
"You still have the nerve to beg for mercy? Claire Clark, are you even human? You’re worse than an animal! What in the world did I ever do to you to make you hurt me over and over again?"
"You nearly killed me! I still have a scar over ten centimeters long because of you! My daughter was almost sold off because of you! And you think a few simple words—’it was a moment of weakness’—is enough to excuse it all? Right now, I want to skin you alive, rip out your tendons, and drink your blood!"
SPLASH.
Claire Clark was so terrified she pissed herself.
Her body trembled so violently she barely looked human.
"I really know I was wrong... I... I..."
Cecelia Archer grabbed her by the collar. "Do you think you’re so pathetic right now? What’s so pathetic about you? At least you have all your limbs. You’re not the one who has to lie in a hospital bed for the rest of their life. Did you ever once stop to think about the person you pushed?"
As she spoke, she angrily ripped the cloths off the faces of the two people beside Claire.
"So you’re Claire Clark’s parents? What kind of disgusting couple raises such a disgusting daughter? Listen to the wonderful things your daughter has done! Aren’t you ashamed?"
Claire Clark’s parents didn’t recognize her. All they knew was that Damien Vaughn was powerful and held their lives in his hands.
They had been unable to speak up and plead for mercy earlier. Now that they could finally see Damien Vaughn clearly and were able to talk, the couple shuffled forward on their knees.
"Damien! Damien! Claire really knows she was wrong! She’s only in her early twenties, she’s young and naive and doesn’t know any better. For the sake of the years she spent with you, please, just spare her this once. We’ll kowtow to you, how about that? We’re her elders, and we’re kowtowing to you, isn’t that enough? Please, we’re begging you, let us go!"
Damien Vaughn watched the disgusting couple, his brow furrowed. Bodyguards immediately rushed forward to block their path.
With a rough heave, they were dragged back to their original spots.
"Don’t move! Move again and we’ll break your legs!"
"Damien—"
"Your daughter was with me for years?"
A scornful smile touched Damien Vaughn’s lips.
"Ask Claire Clark if I ever so much as touched her. Elders? If your daughter hadn’t impersonated my wife, do you think I would have even given you a second glance? Greedy, shameless street trash like you are no different from vermin in my eyes."
"..."
"Return all the money I spent on Claire Clark and on you, with interest. For four years... let’s say one hundred million. That’s not too much, is it?"
As Damien Vaughn spoke, Ryan stepped forward, unlocked Claire Clark’s phone, and held the screen up to her.
"You have ten minutes. Call your brother and get the money. Claire Clark, if you succeed, I’ll consider leaving you an intact corpse. If you fail..."
The surrounding bodyguards took a single, synchronized step forward. Terrified, Claire Clark let out a scream and fell backward.
Ryan wrinkled his nose in disgust and crouched down to hold the phone for her. Claire Clark lay limply on the ground, drained of all strength.
"Brother, we’ve been exposed. I’m in Damien Vaughn’s hands. If you want Mom, Dad, and me to live, transfer all the money in the account over. Yes, all of it. Within ten minutes."
After the call ended, the room plunged into a deathly silence.
Everyone’s eyes were on the family of three, waiting for her brother to decide their fate.
Surprisingly, her brother seemed to have some shred of humanity left, as he actually transferred the money.
Then, another call came through.
"You guys weren’t here last night. I couldn’t help myself... I gambled a bit and lost over ten million. There’s only a little over eighty million left now. Claire, plead with President Vaughn. Tell him it’s close enough, okay?"
The phone was on speaker, and Damien Vaughn heard every word.
The call ended. Before Claire Clark could even begin to plead, he pulled Cecelia Archer to her feet.
"They can work off the rest of the debt by cleaning."
"Make them lick the floor clean. When they’re finished, drag them to Captain Gordon."
"Ryan, see to it."
