My Class is Null, But I Always Get the Best Outcome
Chapter 288: The Candidate’s WarningThe next day in Mythal came.
No civilians yet, only hunters, Mayor Ko’s staff, Astral Church members, engineers, healers, relic specialists, and reconstruction crews. The mood had lifted considerably from the immediate aftermath.
Hunters joked while hauling debris. Raze carried something enormous, complaining loudly that nobody else was helping him. Mira carried something even heavier without comment. Lily and Elden worked on the relay network. Sera organized crews. Gabriel worked alongside the Astral Church members she’d been assigned to.
Kai walked through the middle of it, not fighting for once.
Then he stopped.
He felt it, that familiar pull, blue light beginning to gather around him.
Sera noticed immediately. "The Candidate?"
Kai nodded. "He’s calling us."
The others gathered fast.
Raze sighed. "So much for our break."
"You had one," Mira said.
"It was too short."
"You spent most of it complaining," Lily pointed out.
"Exactly. It was relaxing."
Kai laughed as the blue light expanded around all of them.
They arrived in the Blue World a moment later, the endless expanse sobering everyone up instantly. Gabriel stepped forward and bowed. "Candidate."
He stood waiting, expression calm, eyes moving across each of them before settling on Kai. A faint smile crossed his face. "You succeeded."
Kai nodded. "We did."
The Candidate shook his head. "No."
Everyone looked at him.
"You accomplished something no previous civilization ever did."
Silence held for a moment. Kai thought back through all of it, the dragons, the collapsing city, the beam, the blood.
"We survived," he said finally.
"Exactly," the Candidate confirmed.
He explained that previous civilizations had fought Tiamat in countless ways over the centuries, destroying portions of her dragons, damaging her Domain, wounding her servants, forcing temporary retreats, sacrificing entire standing armies against her.
None had achieved what Mythal had. They’d pulled her out of her own Domain entirely. Destroyed her dragons completely. Wounded her main body.
And passed the First Disaster outright.
Raze grinned. "So we’re officially the best."
"That isn’t what he said," Elden noted.
"It’s what I heard."
The Candidate very nearly smiled.
"So what’s next?" Kai asked.
The Candidate’s expression sobered. "The Second Disaster."
The atmosphere shifted at once. A massive image spread across the Blue World, not a monster this time, but an entire landscape tearing itself apart. Mountains cracking down their spines. Oceans rising far past their shores. Storms swallowing whole cities. The ground splitting open in jagged lines.
Everyone watched in silence.
"The Six Calamities," the Candidate finally said.
Lily’s eyes widened. "Six?"
"Six separate calamities."
Kai studied the images. "So it’s another monster?"
"No."
Raze’s grin disappeared. "A dungeon?"
"No."
"Then what are we fighting?" Mira asked.
"Nothing," the Candidate said.
A pause.
"You are surviving."
The images kept shifting. A massive flood swallowing a coastline. A continent-scale storm. A landscape splitting apart down its length.
"Natural disasters?" Lily asked, thinking fast.
"Yes."
"Earthquakes?"
Another image appeared.
"Floods?"
Another.
"Storms?"
Another.
"Those are closer," the Candidate said, without confirming the exact six outright.
He allowed them brief visions of each in turn. The first split the earth violently, buildings collapsing, roads swallowed whole. The second brought an enormous wall of water rising past the horizon, consuming entire districts in a single wave. The third formed a storm covering the entire visible sky, lightning striking without pause. The fourth turned the land itself lethal as temperatures spiked violently. The fifth collapsed mountains outright, burying everything beneath the resulting slide.
The sixth image distorted, and the Blue World itself darkened around them. Even the Candidate’s explanation cut off mid-sentence.
"The sixth is different," he said finally.
Kai caught it immediately. "Different how?"
The Candidate didn’t answer.
Gabriel spoke up. "I’ve heard of something like this."
Everyone looked toward her. She explained that some records the Church had preserved described civilizations that never faced Tiamat in the same form at all, forced instead to survive disasters originating from the world itself.
She looked at the Candidate. "They called it the wrath of the world."
He nodded. "Correct."
Her expression sharpened. "So some civilizations faced this instead of Tiamat entirely."
"Yes."
Kai connected it immediately to what Tiamat had already told him. "The System adapts."
The Candidate looked at him. "You understand now."
Kai nodded slowly. The System didn’t need to give every civilization the same test. It determined what would best challenge whichever era it was dealing with.
Lily worked through the implication out loud. "Then our Second Disaster doesn’t necessarily mean every civilization faced the Six Calamities."
"Correct," the Candidate said.
"The Filter changes according to the civilization," Elden said quietly.
"And the era."
Raze raised a hand. "Okay. How do we kill it?"
"You don’t."
Raze blinked. "...What?"
"Not yet."
Kai understood immediately. The Candidate explained that they’d just barely survived Tiamat. Mythal was damaged. Their hunters were exhausted. The relic network needed serious repair. Resources had been heavily depleted. The city itself needed to be rebuilt before anything else.
"You should deal with the aftermath of Tiamat’s defeat first," the Candidate said.
"So we’re supposed to recover," Lily said.
"Yes."
"Then prepare," Mira added.
"Yes."
"How long?" Kai asked.
"Until the end of the month."
Everyone went quiet.
Kai’s expression sharpened. "What happens when it arrives?"
The Candidate looked at him directly. "Keep Mythal empty."
Nobody needed further explanation.
"The evacuation cities," Sera said.
"We’ll keep them ready," Kai confirmed.
Lily started thinking out loud immediately. "Then we need the relay network repaired."
"And upgraded," Elden added.
"Hunter recovery," Mira said.
"Training," Raze followed.
"Medical supplies," Sera added.
"Astral Church resources," Gabriel finished.
Kai nodded. "And we’ll need to understand the six calamities before they arrive."
The Candidate didn’t interrupt any of it. "Good. You are already preparing."
Kai remembered something suddenly. "You said the Second Disaster."
The Candidate looked at him. "Yes."
"What’s the third?"
Silence held, the Blue World seeming to grow quieter around them.
"The King of the Sky," the Candidate said finally.
Raze’s expression shifted. "That’s the name?"
"No." The Candidate looked toward the distant horizon. "Behemoth." A pause. "King of the Sky."
Mira asked, "What is Behemoth?"
No answer.
"A monster?" Lily tried.
Silence.
"A beast?" Elden offered.
Nothing.
"How powerful?" Sera asked.
"You will know when the time comes," the Candidate said simply.
Raze crossed his arms. "You really enjoy being vague."
The faintest smile crossed the Candidate’s face. "You really enjoy asking questions you already know I won’t answer."
Raze laughed. "Fair."
Before they left, the Candidate gave them one final warning. "Do not assume the next Disaster will fight you."
Kai’s eyes narrowed. "What does that mean?"
The Candidate looked directly at him. "Sometimes survival means enduring."
The words settled heavy over the group.
The Candidate’s gaze then swept slowly over each of them, Sera, Raze, Lily, Mira, Elden, Gabriel, before returning to Kai and going very still.
Not looking at Kai himself.
Looking at something inside him.
Kai noticed immediately. "...What?"
The Candidate didn’t answer right away, studying him for several long seconds.
"To think," he finally said, quiet. A pause. "...even she would be with you."
Kai stayed silent as the Candidate raised one hand, blue light gathering around the whole group.
"Go. Recover. Rebuild. Strengthen your people." A pause. "Then return."
"We will," Kai said.
The Candidate looked at him one last time. "You had better."
The light expanded, and everyone disappeared.
They reappeared in Mythal a moment later, everyone taking a beat to reorient.
Raze broke the silence first. "Six natural disasters."
"Not monsters," Lily added.
"Environmental destruction on a city-wide scale," Elden said.
Mira looked around at the still-damaged streets. "We have a lot of work ahead of us."
"And less than a month," Gabriel added.
Sera looked at Kai. "Ready?"
Kai looked around, at the damaged streets, the hunters still rebuilding, the Astral Church working alongside them, the relay network glowing steadily beneath it all.
He smiled. "Let’s get to work."
