My Class is Null, But I Always Get the Best Outcome
Chapter 289: The Voice WithinKai walked through the damaged city, streets still filled with hunters, guild members, Astral Church personnel, relic engineers, construction crews, healers, and mana technicians. Mythal looked destroyed and alive at the same time, people working in every direction he looked.
He passed a collapsed building where several hunters hauled stone by hand. A little further along, another crew repaired a bent relay tower, someone shouting "Lift!" while three of them raised a massive slab of metal together.
"Higher!" another voice called.
Raze’s voice carried from somewhere nearby. "If you can still complain, you aren’t tired enough!"
A hunter groaned. "Raze, we’re rebuilding!"
"Exactly! Build faster!"
Kai laughed quietly to himself, then froze.
"Your city survived better than I expected."
He stopped, looking around. Nobody nearby had reacted at all.
"...You really can just talk whenever you want?" he asked quietly.
"Yes."
Kai sighed. "That’s going to take some getting used to."
"You will adapt."
"I hope so."
He looked around at the destruction, one building reduced to rubble, another missing half its roof, a section of street cratered clean through.
"Although," he said, smiling, "a lot of this is technically your fault."
Silence. Then: "Excuse me?"
"You destroyed half the city."
"Your group destroyed more."
Kai stopped walking. "...What?"
"The gigantic beam of magic you fired into the sky."
He remembered the Concentration Strike. "That was necessary."
"And the relic chain that nearly detonated the city."
"...Also necessary."
"You also fired an explosive attack directly into my Domain while I was sleeping."
Kai looked away. "...That one might have been unnecessary."
"You woke me by attacking me."
"Technically, yes."
"And then attempted to teleport me out of my own Domain."
Kai started laughing. "Okay, when you list it like that—"
"I am simply listing what happened."
"That’s true," he admitted, shaking his head. "Fine. You destroyed some of the city."
"Some?"
"...A significant portion."
"Better."
Kai laughed again. "But you have to admit the plan worked."
"It was insane."
"Effective."
"Insane."
"Effective."
"You used the entire city’s mana network to fire a concentrated attack through yourself."
"And it worked."
"You then used a teleportation relic to drag me outside my own Domain."
"And that worked too."
"Then you attempted to destroy me with enough energy to shake the entire city."
Kai paused. "...That one also worked."
A long silence.
"You are proving my point."
Kai burst out laughing. "Okay. Maybe we were a little crazy."
"A little?"
"Fine. Very."
Tiamat didn’t respond for several seconds.
"You are fortunate you survived."
Kai’s smile faded slightly. "I know."
He walked past Lily and Elden a moment later, both kneeling beside a damaged relay tower. Lily held a crystal fragment up to the light.
"If we reinforce this section—"
Elden adjusted his glasses. "The rerouting speed should improve."
"And if we connect it to the backup line?"
"Then Version Three should survive at least two more simultaneous failures."
Kai smiled, watching them work. "They are already improving the system," Tiamat observed.
"That’s Lily and Elden."
"They did not stop after surviving."
"Neither did anyone else."
Tiamat took in the rest of it through his senses. Mira organizing hunters nearby. Raze training a group in the distance. Sera checking equipment. Gabriel coordinating Church members. Hunters everywhere still rebuilding streets.
"Your people are strange," Tiamat said finally.
Kai smiled. "That’s one way to describe them."
She watched a while longer. "They have lost much."
"Yeah."
"They nearly died."
"Yeah."
"And yet they immediately began rebuilding."
Kai looked around. "That’s what people do."
Tiamat went quiet. Then: "I remember that."
Kai’s expression softened, and he didn’t press for more. "You don’t have to tell me."
A long pause.
"Thank you."
He kept walking, and eventually returned to the subject that had been sitting in the back of his mind. "You said you’ve seen civilizations die to the Six Calamities."
"Yes."
"How many?"
Silence held for several seconds.
"Enough."
Kai didn’t push further. Instead he asked, "What makes them so dangerous?"
She explained that the Six Calamities weren’t simply six powerful attacks in sequence. They created cascading destruction. One calamity damaged infrastructure. That damage made the next calamity worse. A flood destroyed roads. Destroyed roads prevented supplies from moving. Lack of supplies weakened recovery. Then another calamity took out communication. Then another destroyed shelter entirely.
Eventually, even a civilization with genuinely powerful hunters could collapse under the accumulated weight of it.
Kai’s eyes narrowed. "So we aren’t just surviving six attacks."
"Correct."
"We’re surviving six disasters while making sure one doesn’t make the next one worse."
"Exactly."
He started running through Mythal’s needs immediately. Food storage. Mana reserves. Emergency transportation. Relay redundancy. Healing capacity. Shelter. Communication. Recovery teams.
Their next round of preparation had to be far broader than combat alone.
"Can we survive?" he asked.
"If you prepare correctly."
Kai smiled. "Then we’ll prepare."
"Good." A pause. "You learn quickly."
He looked mildly surprised. "Was that a compliment?"
"Do not become arrogant."
"That’s definitely a compliment."
"It was an observation."
"Sure," Kai said, grinning.
He reached a section of the city overlooking the whole skyline and looked out toward the horizon. "One month."
"Use it well."
Then a notification appeared.
[New Disaster Countdown Established.] [Second Disaster: Six Calamities.] [Estimated Arrival: End of Month.]
A second followed it.
[Third Disaster: Behemoth.] [Status: Unknown.]
Kai blinked. "...That’s new."
Tiamat reacted immediately. "Behemoth."
"You’ve heard of it?"
"Yes."
"How strong?"
Silence.
"...Tiamat?"
"You will find out."
Kai sighed. "You’re starting to sound like the Candidate."
"Perhaps he learned from me."
Kai laughed. "I don’t think that’s how that works."
That night, Kai finally found himself alone for the first time since Tiamat had joined him. He lay down and closed his eyes.
Silence held for three seconds.
"You are terrible at resting."
His eyes opened. "...You can talk whenever you want."
"Yes."
He stared at the ceiling. "So you’re just going to be here whenever I close my eyes?"
"I am inside you."
"You make that sound worse."
Tiamat gave a quiet laugh. Kai smiled. "This is going to take some getting used to."
"You will adapt."
"You keep saying that."
"Because it is true."
He finally asked the question that had been sitting in the back of his mind all day. "How much of your power can I actually use?"
"One percent."
He sat upright. "...One percent?"
"Yes."
"That’s it?"
"That is all your current body can safely synchronize with."
He looked down at his own hands. "But I already have Water and Storm Authority."
"Fragments."
"And the powers?"
"Fragments as well."
She explained further, that he hadn’t received her complete power at all, only pieces, enough to begin synchronization without overwhelming what he could actually hold.
"Why one percent specifically?" he asked.
She explained her Authority wasn’t simply raw energy. It carried laws, instincts, power, memories, pressure, understanding built up over an age he couldn’t fully picture. Trying to absorb too much at once would be like forcing an ocean through a narrow pipe, the pipe breaking long before the ocean finished passing through it.
"So the percentage isn’t just how much energy I can use," Kai said slowly.
"Correct."
"It’s how much of you my body can actually handle."
"Exactly."
A purple notification appeared.
[Tiamat Synchronization: 1%]
Kai stared at it. "...There’s actually a percentage?"
"Yes."
"What happens at five percent?"
Silence.
"Tiamat."
Nothing.
"Come on."
Finally: "You will find out when you reach it."
He sighed. "You really enjoy doing that."
"It makes you curious."
"You know me too well already."
"I am inside your mind."
He paused. "...That’s still creepy."
"You agreed to this."
"Fair."
She explained that synchronization wouldn’t simply strengthen what he already had access to. Each major threshold would unlock something entirely new. At one percent, he had the fragments he’d already been using, limited guidance from her, limited access to fragments of her memory. At five, potentially deeper Water Authority, manipulating water even without an obvious source nearby. At ten, a possible localized Storm Domain, wind and lightning responding to him naturally. At twenty-five, deeper draconic aspects, not summoning dragons outright, but resistance to them, perception of them, suppression of their power, interaction with draconic mana itself.
Beyond that, she said nothing at all, no matter how directly he asked.
Kai lay back down. "One percent." He looked at the ceiling. "I almost died fighting you. And now I’m carrying one percent of your power."
"Correct."
"That’s supposed to make me feel better?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because if you had received more, you would have died."
Kai stared upward. "...You really need to work on comforting people."
A pause. "I am learning."
He smiled. "You’re getting better."
He closed his eyes again, and this time Tiamat didn’t speak right away. Several seconds passed in quiet.
Then: "Good night, Kai."
His eyes opened slightly, caught off guard by it. "...Good night, Tiamat."
He closed his eyes for good this time, and for the first time, the silence inside his own head didn’t feel empty.
It felt like someone else was actually there.
Not a master. Not a servant. Not a weapon.
A companion.
He drifted off slowly. Outside, Mythal kept rebuilding through the night, hunters moving through the streets, relic engineers working past midnight, Lily and Elden still hunched over their designs for Version Three, Mira training the next wave of hunters somewhere in the dark, Raze pushing his team harder than any of them wanted, Sera checking through the last of the salvaged equipment, Gabriel coordinating the Church’s remaining resources.
And inside Kai, a Disaster slept quietly alongside him.
