My Class is Null, But I Always Get the Best Outcome

The flooded chamber trembled as dozens of Ruins Beasts surged through the water, crashing through ancient stone as they closed in on Kai.

[Ruins Beast — Level: 63.]

Kai stood still, the Stormforged Spear in his right hand, Tidal Edge in his left, wind circling his body, lightning crawling along the spearhead, water rippling gently around his boots.

He smiled. "Come on."

The first monster leaped, and Kai vanished.

WHOOSH!

The armor launched him forward, and he thrust.

CRACK!

Lightning tore through it, and before the body hit the water, he was already moving toward the next one.

Every motion with the spear generated wind now. A thrust became a burst of acceleration. A sweep carved a cutting wave through the air. A spin created a small vortex around him. Lightning followed wherever the spearhead pointed, striking without needing to be aimed separately.

Kai moved through the horde like a storm given human shape.

One monster tried to strike him from behind. He didn’t turn. The wind around his body simply shifted, pushing the attack sideways, and he rotated smoothly into the opening.

SHING!

Tidal Edge caught it across the exposed flank.

He glanced over his shoulder. "The armor is doing half the work for me."

"No," Tiamat said. "You’re finally learning how to use the battlefield around you."

Kai smiled. "That’s better."

More monsters closed in, and he planted his foot. "Tidal Dominion."

The lake answered immediately, water coiling around him like enormous serpents. He pointed Tidal Edge, and the water compressed into dozens of thin blades.

SHING! SHING! SHING!

They tore through the approaching wave, and he followed with a full swing, a gigantic crescent of compressed water crashing outward.

BOOOOOOM!

Several monsters flew backward at once.

He looked at the blade. "This is much easier than shaping everything manually."

"The weapon provides structure."

"And the Authority provides control."

"Correct."

His grin widened. He realized he didn’t need to fight the horde individually at all. He raised one hand, and the surrounding water rose. His other hand, and wind began circulating. Lightning filled the air between them, and the monsters found themselves boxed in, water below, storm above, Kai standing at the center of it all.

He closed his fist. The battlefield contracted inward, water crashing toward the center, wind accelerating it, lightning threading through the whole mass.

BOOOOOOM!

The blast tore through the remaining horde, scattering what was left. Kai didn’t slow down. Stormforged Spear.

CRACK!

Tidal Edge.

SHING!

Wind-assisted movement.

WHOOSH!

One after another, the last monsters fell.

The survivors finally realized they couldn’t overwhelm him alone and charged as one, the whole chamber shaking with the combined weight of the assault.

"So you’re all coming at once?" Kai asked.

The monsters roared. He smiled. "Fine."

He raised the spear, and the clouds above the chamber darkened, lightning gathering fast. He raised Tidal Edge next, and the lake rose behind him, both Authorities beginning to resonate together.

"Don’t overdo it," Tiamat warned.

Kai laughed. "No promises."

He thrust the spear, and the storm descended. He swung the sword, and the ocean rose. The two attacks collided directly in front of him.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

A gigantic storm wave tore across the entire battlefield. When the water finally settled, the horde was gone.

Only one presence remained.

The massive ruin at the center of the chamber shook violently, water flowing toward it in a widening current, the lake level dropping fast.

Kai’s expression hardened. "That’s not normal."

"No."

A gigantic silhouette rose from beneath the surface, stone-like armor covering an enormous body, blue energy pulsing through cracks across its hide, water constantly circling its frame.

[Waterfall Ruin Sovereign.]

[Level: 65.]

Kai gripped Tidal Edge tighter. "Boss."

The creature’s eyes opened, and the entire dungeon trembled in response.

It raised one arm, and the entire lake rose behind it, forming into a wave that grew larger, and larger, until it towered over Kai completely.

BOOOOOOM!

It crashed forward.

Kai raised his hand. "Tidal Dominion."

The water stopped mid-motion. His eyes widened at his own success. The massive wave bent around him, splitting into two enormous streams that crashed against the walls on either side instead.

He looked at the redirected water, then at the boss. "...I changed its attack."

"Of course."

His expression sharpened. "Because I have Authority over water."

"Yes."

The Sovereign attacked again immediately, hundreds of water spears forming overhead before raining down. Kai raised his hand, and some bent away, others lost shape entirely, several collapsing before they reached him.

One still hit his shoulder.

BOOM!

He slid backward, but the impact barely penetrated.

He looked at his shoulder. "...That was weaker than it should’ve been."

"You suppressed it."

"Not completely."

"No." A pause. "Your control isn’t perfect."

"But?" he grinned.

"Good enough."

Another massive attack came, and Kai focused harder this time, the water losing cohesion before it reached him entirely, collapsing in mid-air.

"How far can this go?" he asked.

"With greater control, you could eventually stop another user from manipulating the element at all."

He paused. "...You mean completely?"

"If their Authority is weaker than yours."

Kai laughed. "That’s ridiculous."

"You haven’t even reached two percent."

His laughter cut off. He looked down at his own hands. "...Right."

The boss changed tactics, flooding the chamber instead of attacking directly, water rising past Kai’s waist, then his chest, current dragging him toward the Sovereign. He countered with wind, pushing himself backward. The boss adjusted the flow. Kai redirected it again.

Boss created water. Kai altered it. Boss shifted the current. Kai redirected it back. Boss built pressure. Kai suppressed it.

He wasn’t overpowering it at all.

He was out-controlling it.

Kai activated the Stormforged Spear, lightning crashing straight through the water around him. The Sovereign tried to use the surrounding lake as a shield, and Kai simply took control of part of it, opening a clean path through.

WHOOSH!

The armor accelerated him forward, and he appeared directly beside the boss.

SHING!

A deep cut opened across its stone armor. It roared and swung, and Kai used wind to dodge, rotating through the air before the spear struck its exposed side.

CRACK!

Lightning exploded across its body. He landed behind it, already moving on.

The Sovereign, realizing brute force wasn’t working, drew water from every corner of the dungeon at once. The waterfalls reversed. The underground lake surged upward. Streams tore themselves loose from the ruins entirely, all of it converging toward the boss.

"It’s gathering everything," Tiamat said, tone sharpening.

Kai looked around. "How much water?"

"Nearly all of it."

He smiled. "Then it made a mistake."

"Why?"

He raised his hand. "It brought everything into my range too."

He activated Tidal Dominion fully, and the entire chamber responded. Water froze in place. The boss tried to force it forward, and nothing happened.

Kai slowly closed his fist. The water began turning. The enormous mass rushing toward the Sovereign reversed direction entirely, and the boss’s eyes widened as it realized what was happening a heartbeat too late.

Kai pulled.

The entire lake crashed into it.

BOOOOOOOOOOM!

The Sovereign vanished beneath its own attack.

Kai didn’t wait. He raised the Stormforged Spear, and the sky over the dungeon darkened. He activated Storm Authority, then Tidal Dominion together, water rising around him as the storm descended, lightning gathering thick along the spear, a thin layer of high-pressure water forming around Tidal Edge.

"Let’s finish this."

He launched forward.

WHOOSH!

Wind carried him, lightning trailing behind, water forming in his wake. The Sovereign erupted back out of the lake to meet him, attacking desperately. Kai suppressed the water mid-strike, the attack weakening before it landed, and he slipped through the opening.

SHING!

Tidal Edge cut clean across its chest. He spun, driving the spear forward.

CRACK!

Lightning detonated inside the fresh wound.

BOOOOOOOOOOM!

The Sovereign’s body cracked apart entirely, the dungeon trembling around the collapse, its remains sinking beneath the churning water.

Silence.

Kai stood in the center of the flooded chamber as the water slowly settled and the boss dissolved from view.

[Dungeon Cleared.]

[Boss Defeated.]

Kai smiled.

[Distortion Applied.]

[Reward Quality: Optimized.]

He laughed quietly. "There it is."

Several objects rose above the water, and unlike the earlier rewards, these weren’t weapons. Two rings drifted down into his palm.

[Waterfield Rings — S-Grade.]

[Effect: Creates and coats the surrounding battlefield in a large quantity of controllable water.]

Kai examined them, then looked toward the space where Tiamat’s presence sat. "These are almost too convenient."

"No."

"No?"

"They’re exactly what you need."

He understood immediately. Without an existing water source nearby, his Water Authority stayed limited. With the rings, any battlefield could become one.

"So I can bring the environment with me," he said.

"Yes."

He put the rings away. "That’s useful."

"Very."

He walked out of the dungeon a while later, everything behind him beginning to destabilize, cracks spreading through the walls, the waterfalls flickering out of existence one at a time, the ruins collapsing inward as he moved.

He reached the exit and looked back once before stepping through.

CRACK!

BOOM!

The Waterfall Ruins gate shattered into scattering particles the instant he cleared it.

He stood outside, looking at his new equipment, then at the rings, then down at his own hands.

A faint smile crossed his face. "That was worth it."

"You learned a lot," Tiamat said.

"And I barely scratched the surface."

"Correct."

He smiled. "Good."

He had a new long-term goal now, one that went beyond simply getting stronger.

Finding out exactly what one percent of a Disaster could eventually become.

Somewhere inside him, quietly, Tiamat smiled too.
