My Class is Null, But I Always Get the Best Outcome
Chapter 293: The First CombinationKai stepped through the collapsed remains of the Waterfall Ruins gate, and instead of heading back toward Mythal, he turned.
"You’re going the wrong way," Tiamat said.
He kept walking. "No, I’m going the right way."
"You just cleared a B-Rank dungeon."
"I know."
"You should rest."
Kai smiled. "I want to test something."
Tiamat went quiet. He raised his hand, a faint mixture of water and lightning gathering around his fingers.
"I want to see what your Authorities do when Distortion gets involved."
Several seconds passed before she answered. "You’re curious."
"Very."
"Then test it."
He grinned. "That’s what I wanted to hear."
As he walked, he thought back through everything from the last fight. His Authorities had worked exactly as expected, water, storm, suppression, elemental control laid out plainly. Distortion had always behaved differently. It didn’t feel like a skill. It didn’t feel like mana. It didn’t even feel like something that lived inside the System at all.
It simply pulled him toward the best outcome.
He looked at his hand. "If Distortion can influence the outcome of an attack, what happens if the attack itself comes from an Authority?"
"That is what you’re about to find out," Tiamat said.
He walked through the western side of the city without a destination in mind, and the air ahead rippled without warning, mana gathering between two damaged buildings. A gate formed slowly.
[B-Rank Dungeon Found.]
[B-Rank Dungeon: Tempest Hollow.]
Kai smiled. "That works."
"You’re lucky."
"Or maybe Distortion wanted me here."
Silence.
"Don’t become arrogant."
He laughed. "Worth asking."
He stepped through, and the world opened into a gigantic canyon, black cliffs stretching hundreds of meters overhead, storm clouds churning between them, lightning flashing continuously across the gap. Floating stone platforms drifted through open air. Some pockets of the canyon sat under violent wind. Others were dead still. Small streams cut through the canyon floor.
Kai looked around. "This is almost too convenient."
"For Storm Authority?"
"And Water."
He crouched, touching a stream, and Water Authority responded immediately, the current rising slightly at his touch.
"Perfect." He looked deeper into the canyon. "Now let’s see what happens when Distortion gets involved."
Movement broke from the cliffs above.
[Storm Beast — Level: 62.]
[Storm Beast — Level: 63.]
[Storm Beast — Level: 64.]
He didn’t attack right away, watching them move, phasing into gusts of wind and reappearing several feet off, changing direction mid-air before vanishing again.
"They’re using the wind," he said.
"Yes."
"Then I’ll use it too."
He raised his hand, lightning gathering, and fired.
CRACK!
The nearest beast twisted sideways, and the bolt missed clean. He tried again, and another dodged.
"They’re predicting the trajectory," he said.
"Then stop giving them a trajectory to predict."
Kai paused. "Distortion."
"Exactly."
He raised his hand again, this time not thinking about the path the lightning would take, only fixing on one thought.
Hit it.
The bolt exploded from his palm, and the beast moved exactly as it had before, the attack lining up to miss entirely.
Then it bent. Not naturally, curving sharply around a stone pillar before snapping in a new direction.
CRACK!
It struck the beast from behind.
Kai froze. "...What?"
Tiamat said nothing.
He looked at the fallen monster, then at his own hand, then traced the path the lightning had taken. "That wasn’t normal."
Finally she spoke. "Do it again."
He looked surprised. "Why?"
A pause. "Because that shouldn’t happen."
He found another beast hiding behind a stone formation and tried it again. "Again."
Lightning formed, and he fired. The monster ducked behind cover, and the bolt struck the obstacle, exactly as he’d expected it to stop.
Instead it split, one branch curving left, another right, both converging behind the monster’s blind side.
CRACK!
It fell.
Kai stared. "It isn’t just making the lightning stronger."
"No."
"It’s changing how the attack reaches the target."
"More than that."
He looked inward. "It’s changing the outcome."
He moved deeper into the canyon and found a pool of water, raising his hand. "Let’s try water."
Tidal Dominion pulled the pool upward, forming into several spears. A beast charged, and he fired. It dodged, the spear on course to pass harmlessly by.
Instead it curved sharply, changing direction mid-air.
SHING!
It struck from underneath.
He lowered his hand slowly. "...Same thing."
"Yes."
"So this isn’t related to lightning specifically."
"No."
"It’s the combination."
She didn’t answer, and her silence told him plenty.
He spent the next while genuinely excited, testing everything he could think of. Lightning curved around obstacles that should’ve blocked it entirely. A water spear changed trajectory mid-flight to catch a dodging target. A wind blade shifted direction after being loosed. A water shield drifted toward the exact point of impact a half-second before the attack landed, like it already knew where the blow was going.
Distortion wasn’t improving the attacks outright. It was making small corrections at precisely the right moment.
A Storm Beast appeared behind him without warning, claws swinging. Kai didn’t consciously react, his body simply shifting on its own, the claw passing his shoulder by inches. He turned, and the wind around him shifted direction, throwing the monster off balance. Tempest Fang materialized through the Ashen Seal.
BOOM!
The weapon struck.
Kai looked at it. "...Did Distortion do that?"
"Probably."
"Probably?"
"You still don’t understand it."
He smiled. "Neither do you."
Tiamat went quiet. Then, finally: "No."
He decided to widen the experiment. The Ashen Seal activated fully, weapons rising to orbit him, Tempest Fang, Verdant Fang, Rootbreaker, Null Fang, Bloodthorn.
"Let’s see what happens when everything gets involved."
"You really don’t believe in testing one thing at a time."
"Where’s the fun in that?"
He channeled Storm Authority through Tempest Fang, wind spiraling around the blade, lightning arcing along its edge. He launched it, and a beast dodged. The weapon changed course mid-flight.
CRACK!
It struck, then returned to his hand.
"That feels different."
"You’re allowing Distortion to determine the weapon’s path."
He nodded. "So Ashen Seal gives me control. Storm Authority gives it elemental power." He looked at the blade. "And Distortion gives it the best path."
He swapped to Verdant Fang, channeling Water Authority through it, compressed water forming around the spearhead. He threw it, the weapon piercing through one monster, curving mid-flight, striking a second, before returning to his hand.
"That’s useful."
"You sound pleased."
"I am."
He pushed the experiment further, switching to Flame Swordsman, his blade igniting, a compressed fire slash tearing across the canyon and curving subtly around a rock formation on its own. He switched to Earth Mage, and stone pillars rose exactly where fleeing monsters were trying to escape rather than randomly.
"...That’s not just attacks," he said.
"No."
"Distortion is affecting positioning too."
He tried Air Step next, deliberately aiming for an awkward landing near a cliff edge. Instead his body shifted several inches on its own, landing him cleanly on a floating platform he hadn’t consciously targeted.
He looked down. "...I didn’t aim there."
"You didn’t need to."
More Storm Beasts closed in, and this time Kai stopped trying to kill them fast, experimenting instead. He let one attack, Air Steping through the strike and repositioning behind it. Thread Caster pulled him into place for another. Tempest Fang struck a third from a blind angle. Water bent around a cliff face, lightning trailing behind it. Wind shoved a fourth monster directly into Rootbreaker’s swing.
BOOM!
His entire fighting style had always been built around adaptation. Now Distortion was helping him find the optimal chain before he’d even consciously chosen it.
"This changes everything," he said, grinning.
"Only if you learn to control it."
He stopped moving. "Can Distortion do this with everything?"
"You don’t know what Distortion can do."
"Neither do you."
"Correct."
He looked at the faint shimmer still clinging to his fingers. "Then we’ll find out."
"Be careful."
He looked surprised. "That sounded almost worried."
"Don’t misunderstand me."
He laughed. "There she is."
He kept moving deeper into the canyon, and the dungeon escalated with him. Storm Beasts started appearing in larger clusters. Lightning struck the floating platforms without warning. Winds tried to throw him toward the open drop below. Water currents cut across the gaps between cliffs.
He used everything at once now. Storm Authority. Water Authority. Tempest Fang. Verdant Fang. Ashen Seal. Air Step. Class Emulations. Distortion threading through all of it. The fights got smoother with every exchange, not because he’d suddenly grown overwhelmingly stronger, but because he was finally learning how to layer everything he had into a single flow.
He reached the edge of a floating platform, and the dungeon opened into a gigantic valley below, hundreds of monsters moving through it.
His attention went past all of them, toward a massive storm forming deep in the dungeon’s heart, perfectly circular, unlike anything the canyon had generated naturally. Lightning struck its center in a steady rhythm. Wind spiraled tight around it.
He narrowed his eyes. "...Boss room?"
"Likely."
He laughed. "You really can’t just say yes, can you?"
"You already know the answer."
He gripped the Fractured Blade, the Ashen Seal activating fully around him, weapons falling into orbit one after another, Tempest Fang, Verdant Fang, Rootbreaker, Null Fang, Bloodthorn. The Stormforged Spear and Tidal Edge stayed ready in each hand.
He looked down at the valley stretching out below.
"Then let’s see what happens when Distortion meets something stronger."
He stepped off the platform. Wind caught him instantly, his body accelerating downward, his weapons falling with him in perfect formation.
The distant storm flashed once.
BOOOOOOM.
Kai smiled.
