My Class is Null, But I Always Get the Best Outcome

The Candidate raised one hand, and the blue world disappeared. For a moment Kai felt nothing beneath his feet.

Then—

BOOM.

The ground returned, Mythal forming around them exactly as it had been before the simulation. The streets. The relay towers. The rebuilt structures. The defensive platforms. Every piece of it recreated in perfect detail.

Kai looked around slowly. "It feels real."

"That’s the point," Elden said.

Lily glanced at the sky. "No civilians."

"Same conditions as the actual Disaster," Kai said.

Even Gabriel, who’d seen simulations before, looked uneasy at the accuracy. "This is close to the records."

The Candidate stood several streets away. "You will experience each calamity under the same conditions you were shown."

"And if we fail?" Kai asked.

He didn’t answer right away. "Then you learn why."

Kai smiled faintly. "Fair enough."

"Try not to destroy your own city this time," Tiamat said.

His lips twitched. "That happened because the circumstances were complicated."

"You created a city-sized explosion."

"...Details."

The Candidate raised his hand.

[Simulation Start.]

The sky changed instantly, blue giving way to crimson, temperature dropping fast, wind twisting hard through the streets.

Lily looked up. "It’s starting."

A crimson line cut across the sky.

BOOOOOOM!

A building several streets away split apart, stone exploding outward.

Red Storm had begun.

Kai raised his sword. "Red Storm!"

Golden light raced beneath the streets, one relay tower activating, then another, then dozens, the whole city beginning to glow.

Elden watched the readings. "Primary network synchronized."

"Prediction system online," Lily called.

"Hunter network ready," Sera confirmed.

"Emergency extraction ready," Mira added.

Raze cracked his neck. "Finally."

Kai looked at him. "Stay inside your assigned zone."

Raze grinned. "No promises."

Another crimson line appeared, directly above the northern district.

"North District! Impact in three seconds!" Lily shouted.

Three. Two. One.

BOOOOOOM!

A massive golden barrier formed, catching the strike, cracks spreading across its surface under the impact, but holding.

Raze laughed. "Nice!"

"Don’t celebrate yet," Lily warned.

The storm shifted direction, heading east this time. Before it landed, the eastern barrier flared to life.

BOOM!

It held.

"Prediction was correct," Elden said, checking the readout.

Another strike formed, then abruptly changed direction, veering south instead.

Lily’s eyes widened. "It changed."

Elden activated the secondary response instantly. "Adaptive relay."

The eastern barrier shut down, power racing through the underground network as the southern defense flared alive.

BOOM!

The strike hit the new barrier and held there too.

Lily stared at the southern barrier, then at Elden. "It actually followed it."

"Prediction failed," Elden said.

"But the network didn’t," Lily finished, smiling.

Kai heard the exchange and smiled too. Their argument from the planning room had paid off exactly the way it was supposed to.

The storm escalated fast after that. Five strikes. Then ten. Then twenty across the city at once, golden walls appearing, vanishing, shifting position, reforming, the whole city breathing in rhythm with the attack.

"It’s getting faster," Kai said.

"The network is learning the attack pattern," Elden said.

Lily shook her head, watching the data stream past. "Not learning. Adapting."

"Even better," Kai said.

A crimson strike broke through unexpectedly, catching a group of hunters directly beneath its trajectory.

"MOVE!" Sera shouted.

Everyone scattered. One hunter didn’t move fast enough, the strike clipping his shoulder, blood spraying across the street.

Before Sera could reach him, golden light surrounded him.

WHOOSH!

He was gone, reappearing inside an emergency shelter a heartbeat later.

Sera froze. "...That worked."

Lily checked the response time. "Point three seconds."

"Faster than our simulation projected," Elden said.

The storm suddenly concentrated around Kai directly, several crimson strikes changing course to follow him.

"It’s targeting me," he said.

"Then move," Sera called.

He grinned. "That’s exactly what I’m going to do."

He deliberately ran toward the weakest district, and the whole relay network shifted with him, golden energy trailing his path, barrier and suppression and healing and artillery converging on his position wherever he went.

Lily’s eyes widened. "The Authority amplification is working."

"His position is increasing the network’s output," Elden said.

"Then I’ll keep moving," Kai said, sprinting through the streets and drawing the storm’s worst strikes away from the more vulnerable districts.

Sera realized what he was doing. "He’s drawing it away."

"He’s turning himself into the target," Mira said.

Raze laughed. "That’s our Kai."

"I hate when he does this," Sera muttered.

Kai’s voice came through the network. "You’ll get used to it."

"No."

The storm reached its most violent point, the entire sky turning crimson, hundreds of strikes landing across the city at once. Elden’s expression tightened as the network readings climbed toward their limit.

"We’re reaching the upper limit."

"Can we hold?" Lily asked.

"If the network doesn’t fail."

"Then don’t let it," Kai said.

Every relay in the city activated simultaneously, Mythal glowing gold from edge to edge, and the final wave descended.

BOOOOOOM! Barrier.

BOOM! Gravity.

BOOM! Artillery.

BOOM! Terrain manipulation.

One after another, the city held.

The crimson clouds finally thinned and vanished, the wind dying down to nothing. Silence settled over a handful of damaged buildings and a few destroyed streets.

Mythal was still standing.

[Red Storm — Survived.]

Raze punched a fist into the air. "YES!"

"One," Lily said.

"One down," Kai agreed.

"Acceptable," Tiamat said quietly.

Kai smiled. "I’ll take that."

The environment shifted again almost immediately, the sky darkening, temperature dropping. Black water appeared at the city’s edge, moving unnaturally, like ink given weight.

Mira took command instantly. "Flood channels."

The terrain systems activated, roads splitting open, drainage routes carving through the streets, walls rising in careful sequence.

The flood reached the city and hit the first barrier, turning as intended into the prepared channel.

"Open Channel Two," Mira ordered. The next route activated, and the flood turned again.

"It’s following the route," Lily confirmed.

"Flow rate is higher than predicted," Elden said.

"Then open the third."

Another section of the city reshaped itself, guiding the flood deliberately deeper through Mythal toward the sacrifice zone.

It reached the abandoned district. Mira looked at the map. "Seal it."

The streets closed. Barriers rose around the perimeter. The flood poured in, buildings disappearing beneath the black liquid.

Raze watched, unnerved. "...That’s horrifying."

"But it’s empty," Kai said.

"That’s why we evacuated," Mira said quietly.

A sudden surge overwhelmed one of the barriers.

CRACK!

Black water poured into a populated hunter zone.

"Everyone move!" Sera shouted.

Emergency teleportation activated in rapid succession, hunters vanishing one after another. One. Two. Ten. Twenty. Golden light flashing repeatedly through the flooding street.

"Extraction is keeping up!" Lily called.

Then one hunter remained, frozen, black water already at his feet.

Raze spotted him. "MOVE!"

The hunter didn’t react. Raze charged, grabbing him bodily and hurling him toward the extraction zone. The hunter vanished. Raze barely made it out himself, landing hard on dry ground.

"Idiot!" Sera shouted.

Raze laughed. "Worked."

"You could have been erased!"

"But I wasn’t."

Mira shook her head. "You’re impossible."

The flood suddenly abandoned the prepared channels, moving on its own.

"It’s moving on its own," Lily said, alarmed.

"The terrain manipulation isn’t controlling it," Elden confirmed.

"Then redirect it manually," Mira said.

"No," Kai said. Everyone turned. He pointed toward the final empty district. "We’ve already prepared for that. Let it move."

The flood found the sacrifice zone on its own, consuming the empty district before finally beginning to recede.

Silence fell as the black water disappeared entirely.

[Black Flood — Survived.]

Everyone exhaled at once. Raze grinned. "Two."

"Don’t," Lily said immediately.

"Don’t what?"

"Say anything about the third."

He paused, then smiled anyway. "...Three should be easy."

Everyone groaned.

The ground began glowing orange as the simulation shifted a third time, cracks spreading through the streets, heat erupting upward.

"Burning Earth," Kai said, expression sobering.

The terrain systems activated, elevated platforms rising, emergency shelters opening, hunters moving toward safe zones, heat cores flaring to life.

For a while, everything worked. One district collapsed, and a platform rose beneath it in time to catch the hunters. Another section began overheating, and heat cores stabilized it before anyone got hurt.

"Everything’s stable," Lily reported.

"Relay output normal," Elden confirmed.

"Safe zones intact," Mira added.

"We’re doing it," Kai said.

Then a relay flickered.

He looked toward it. "...What?"

Another flickered. Then another.

Elden’s expression changed fast. "Underground conduits."

"What about them?" Lily asked.

"They’re overheating."

Burning Earth wasn’t just destroying streets. It was attacking the foundation of the entire network from below.

One relay shut down. Then another. Then five at once, golden light beneath the streets fading district by district.

"Reroute," Mira said.

"Already trying," Elden replied.

Another relay died.

"There’s nowhere to reroute," Elden said.

"Why?" Lily asked.

"Because every major line runs underground."

Silence. Kai understood immediately. They’d built their entire defense network inside the exact thing this disaster was designed to destroy.

Elevated platforms began losing power, one collapsing entirely.

BOOM!

Another cracked. Hunters started evacuating in a rush.

"Everyone out!" Sera shouted.

Raze carried injured hunters clear two at a time. Mira tried manually stabilizing a failing platform. Lily switched relays desperately. Elden worked emergency rerouting that had nowhere left to go.

Kai moved toward the central network, and the ground split open beneath him. He Air Stepped clear just in time.

He reached the central relay. "Can we save it?"

"No," Elden said honestly.

Kai looked out at the city. The network went dark district by district, Burning Earth swallowing one section after another.

The simulation froze entirely. Silence.

[Burning Earth — Failed.]

Nobody spoke for a moment.

Raze finally broke it. "...We almost had it."

"No," Elden said, shaking his head. He looked at the destroyed infrastructure. "We never had the right structure."

Lily clenched her fist. "We protected the city." She looked at the dead network. "But we didn’t protect the thing protecting the city."

"That’s the problem," Kai said quietly.

The Candidate appeared. "Your first two strategies succeeded because you allowed the city to adapt around the calamity." He looked toward the ruined network beneath the streets. "Burning Earth exposed your mistake."

Elden listened closely.

"You built the network beneath the city," the Candidate continued. "But what happens when the earth itself becomes hostile?"

Lily caught it immediately. "The network has to leave the ground."

He didn’t confirm it outright. "That is one solution."

"What else?" Kai asked.

"Independent systems," Elden said slowly.

The Candidate nodded. "Do not allow one disaster to destroy the infrastructure required to survive another."

Gabriel looked up suddenly. "Wait." Everyone turned. She flipped through the Nexus records fast. "We had this problem."

"During Burning Earth?" Kai asked.

She nodded. "Our underground network failed the same way."

"What did you do?" Lily asked.

Gabriel pulled up an old diagram, a massive network of suspended structures rising above a city skyline. "We moved the important parts above the ground."

Elden’s eyes widened. "Suspended relays."

"Floating relays," Gabriel confirmed.

Lily was already modifying the design in her head. "Not the entire network."

"Only the critical lines," Elden said.

"And the underground system becomes disposable," Mira added.

Kai smiled. "Exactly."

The destroyed underground network vanished from the map, a new layered system appearing in its place. A Primary Network, elevated and protected. A Secondary Network, underground and expendable. An Emergency Network of floating relays. Mobile relays able to reposition during the disaster itself.

Lily stared at it. "That might actually work."

"It should," Elden said.

"And if it doesn’t?" Mira asked.

Kai smiled. "Then we’ll find out why."

Raze turned toward the Candidate. "So." He pointed at the destroyed city. "Do we have to do all three again?"

"No."

Everyone looked at him.

"I created a restoration point."

Raze blinked. "...A what?"

The Candidate raised his hand, and the entire simulation rewound, destroyed districts reconstructing, fallen platforms rising back into place, broken towers reforming. They returned back to the time before Burning Earth started.

[Simulation Restoration Point Established.]

Raze’s eyes went wide. "You have checkpoints?!"

The Candidate offered the faintest smile. "Something similar."

"I officially like you."

Lily sighed. "You only like him because he gave us a retry."

"Correct."

The group refocused fast. Red Storm and Black Flood were proven now, no need to repeat them. Only Burning Earth remained, and they already knew exactly what had gone wrong.

"We know what failed," Kai said.

"Our network was too dependent on the ground," Elden said.

"So we move the critical infrastructure," Lily said.

"Keep the underground system as backup," Mira added.

"And use the Nexus suspension technology," Gabriel said.

"What about the hunters?" Sera asked.

"They get mobile relay support," Kai said.

"And if all of that fails?" Raze asked.

Kai smiled. "Then we’ll find the next problem."

The Candidate restored the exact starting point, the city intact, the first two disasters marked complete, only Burning Earth remaining.

Kai took his position. Sera checked on the hunters. Lily prepared the new relay structure. Elden ran the suspended-network calculations. Mira checked the emergency routes. Gabriel pulled up the old Nexus designs one more time.

Raze cracked his knuckles. "Round two."

"This time, we’re ready," Kai said.

"You were already ready," Tiamat said quietly.

He paused. "...That’s surprisingly encouraging."

A beat. "You were simply ready for the wrong disaster."

Kai laughed. "I’ll take that."

The ground began glowing orange again, Burning Earth about to begin for the second time, the new suspended network already lighting up in careful formation above Mythal.
