My Class is Null, But I Always Get the Best Outcome

Kai sat on the edge of a partially repaired building, legs hanging over the side, Mythal spread out beneath him still very much a work in progress.

He saw hunters hauling construction materials, Astral Church members repairing damaged relics, workers replacing destroyed relay towers, new floating relay structures being tested against the skyline.

Somewhere in the distance he could make out Elden and Lily bent over a projection, Mayor Ko directing crews from the central square.

The city looked damaged. It didn’t feel dead anymore.

Kai held his phone up, the screen showing an incoming call. Leo + Mina — Video Call.

He tapped it, and Leo’s face filled the screen instantly.

"KAI!"

Kai pulled the phone back on instinct. "...You’re loud."

Leo laughed. "You actually answered!"

Mina appeared beside him. "Hi, Kai."

"Hey," Kai said, smiling.

He leaned back against the rooftop. "How are things?"

"Pretty good," Mina said, glancing at Leo. "Though people have been asking a lot of questions about Mythal."

"What kind?"

She explained that many of the evacuated residents had expected construction to resume normally after Tiamat fell, but it hadn’t. Crews hadn’t been recalled. Several projects stayed paused, and nobody had announced when people could actually return.

Then Mayor Ko’s announcement went out.

"Once everyone heard there was another disaster coming, it made more sense," Mina said.

Kai nodded. "Good."

"People are still worried, though."

He looked down at Mythal. "...I figured."

Leo suddenly leaned into frame. "Wait." Kai looked at him. "There’s actually another disaster coming?!"

"Yeah."

"Why is there another disaster?!"

Kai laughed. "Because there have always been three."

Leo froze. "...Three?"

"The First Disaster was just considered the most dangerous." He explained that the surviving records had always focused most heavily on it, which was why Mythal had prioritized Tiamat first.

"So after Tiamat—" Leo said slowly.

"We have the Six Calamities."

"...And then there’s another one?"

"Behemoth."

Leo stared at the screen. "You’re saying that way too casually."

Kai laughed. "What do you want me to do?"

Leo’s nervousness didn’t fade. "Then what about the second?"

Kai smiled. "Don’t worry." Leo waited. "We already have a plan."

"Really?"

"We tested it. And it worked."

Leo’s whole expression lit up. "It worked?!"

"The simulation," Kai clarified.

Leo pumped his fist. "Then you guys are already ready!"

"Almost," Kai said, shaking his head. "We still need to train. Improve the defense network. Clear more dungeons. Make sure everything’s ready before the real one shows up."

Leo clenched a fist toward the camera. "Then go at it!"

Kai laughed. "You’re giving me orders now?"

"Someone has to."

Mina laughed beside him.

"You already beat Tiamat," Leo said, grinning. "You guys can handle the second disaster too."

"That’s the plan."

"Then don’t stop!"

"I won’t."

Leo suddenly perked up like he’d remembered something. "Oh!"

Kai raised an eyebrow. "What?"

"Right! I need to tell you about Virelia!"

Kai laughed. "You sound excited."

"Because Virelia is amazing!"

"He’s been talking about it constantly," Mina added.

"Because there’s so much to do!" Leo protested.

Kai settled back against the rooftop. "Alright. Tell me."

Leo launched in, describing festivals, street performances, music, food stalls, public competitions, hunter events, community gatherings, groups meeting up constantly, something happening nearly every day.

"There’s something going on almost every day!" he said.

Kai smiled. "That sounds exhausting."

"It’s fun!"

"He’s not exaggerating," Mina said, joining in. "Virelia has a really strong community. People actually know each other. The festivals are probably the biggest part of it."

Kai listened quietly, looking down at the ruined streets beneath him, then back at the screen. Virelia had festivals, parties, friends, ordinary life. Mythal had construction, relics, training, disaster preparation.

"I’m glad you’re enjoying it," he said.

Leo grinned. "You should come visit."

"Once Mythal is rebuilt."

"Promise?"

"Promise."

Leo kept going. "Oh, and I made some new friends."

Kai raised an eyebrow. "Already?"

"Yeah!" He explained that he and Hana had met another group around their age, and they’d been spending time together constantly, festivals, meals, exploring different parts of the city.

"Sounds like you’re having fun," Kai said.

"We are!"

"He’s barely been home," Mina added.

"That’s because there’s too much to do!"

Kai caught something. "Wait."

"What?"

"You said Hana?"

"Yeah."

"Hana and her older sister went to Virelia too?"

"Yep."

Kai raised an eyebrow. "Her older sister too?"

"Yeah." Leo added casually, "She even slept over here sometimes."

Kai paused. Mina immediately burst out laughing.

"...Sometimes?" Kai asked.

Leo’s smile turned slightly awkward. "Yeah."

Kai shook his head. "Hopefully you guys aren’t driving Mina crazy."

"Of course not!" Leo protested.

"They’re fine," Mina said, still laughing.

"That’s not exactly a denial."

"They’re loud."

"Hey!"

Kai laughed.

"She likes having us around," Leo said, pointing at Mina.

"I didn’t say that."

"You didn’t say you disliked it."

"That’s different."

Kai laughed harder. "I’m glad nothing has changed."

"We’re still us," Leo said, smiling.

The conversation kept going for a while, drifting through Virelia’s food, Leo’s new friends, Hana, festivals, plans for once Mythal was fully rebuilt. Kai mostly listened, and for a few minutes he genuinely forgot about Tiamat, the Six Calamities, Behemoth, the countdown ticking down somewhere in the back of his mind.

He was just a brother sitting on a rooftop, talking.

"What about you?" Leo asked eventually.

Kai looked at him. "What about me?"

"What have you been doing?"

Kai looked out over Mythal. The damaged buildings. The new relay towers. Hunters training in the distance. Church members working. Mayor Ko directing everything from the square.

"Rebuilding," he said, smiling.

"And fighting?"

"...That too."

Mina eventually checked the time. "We should probably let Kai work."

"Already?" Leo complained.

Kai glanced at his own clock. "We’ve been talking for almost an hour."

Leo froze. "...Oh."

"Get some rest too," Mina said, smiling.

"I’ll try."

"And don’t forget," Leo said.

"Forget what?"

"Your promise."

Kai laughed. "I remember. I’ll visit."

Leo grinned. "Good."

"Bye, Kai," Mina said, waving.

"Bye!" Leo added.

Kai raised a hand toward the screen. "See you."

The call ended.

The rooftop went quiet, Kai lowering the phone and looking back out over the city.

"Your brother is loud," Tiamat said.

Kai froze, looking around instinctively. "...You were listening?"

Silence.

"You were thinking loudly."

He stared ahead. "That’s not how thinking works."

A pause. "It is now."

He rubbed his forehead. "...I’m going to have to get used to this."

"You will."

"Were you listening the whole time?"

"Yes."

"That’s creepy."

"You were talking to them through a device while sitting on the edge of a building." A pause. "I was curious."

Kai laughed. "So you’re curious."

"Don’t make it strange."

He smiled, looking out at Mythal again, the smile fading slowly as he watched workers move between the half-rebuilt streets below.

His siblings were safe. They were making friends. They had festivals to look forward to, ordinary things to be excited about.

"I need to make sure they can keep living like that," he said quietly.

Tiamat didn’t joke this time. "Then become stronger."

Kai looked toward the horizon.

"I will."
