Even someone of her standing had been surprised by what had happened to Iron Vultures.
The entire city was still talking about how the veteran gang was simply erased.
She leaned back in her chair. "I knew you had potential, West..."
"...but even I didn’t think you’d shake the city this quickly."
There was genuine pride in her expression.
To her, West was almost like a junior she had chosen to support.
Seeing him rise this quickly brought her unexpected satisfaction.
A knock sounded. "Come in."
The door opened and Renzhi stepped inside.
His smile looked perfectly natural... only... it wasn’t.
"Lady Zu Li."
"I heard an invitation arrived."
Zu Li waved it lightly. "It did."
"We’re attending."
"Shadow Reapers has earned that much."
Renzhi nodded obediently. "Of course."
But the moment his eyes landed on the invitation... something inside him twisted.
Shadow Reapers...
Again.
West Einstein...
Again.
He gritted his teeth so subtly that almost nobody would have noticed.
’How...
How the hell...? Is iron Vultures... gone... Bloodstain...’
Months ago West had been a nobody. Now he was becoming one of the most talked-about young awakened in the entire city.
Nothing made sense anymore.
Renzhi had been absolutely certain Iron Vultures would crush them.
Instead... Iron Vultures no longer existed.
His nails dug into his palm.
’How does he keep surviving...?
How does he keep coming out on top?’
Every attempt had failed.
Every setback only seemed to make Shadow Reapers stronger.
Now he had to attend a celebration and congratulate the very boy whose downfall he had tried to orchestrate.
It made him sick.
Zu Li noticed him unusually quiet. "You seem distracted."
Renzhi immediately smiled again. "Nothing serious."
"I’m simply surprised."
"So am I."
Zu Li laughed lightly. "I underestimated West."
"I won’t be making that mistake again."
She folded the invitation carefully. "I’m actually looking forward to seeing what he has planned."
Renzhi forced another smile. "...As am I."
Deep within... he wanted to tear the invitation apart.
...
Elsewhere across Misty High City...
A prestigious real estate company occupied the upper floors of a gleaming glass skyscraper.
Employees hurried from desk to desk carrying documents while phones rang nonstop.
At the end of a luxurious hallway... Liz stood before a large office door.
She took a quiet breath before knocking.
"Come in."
Upon entering, her boss could be spotted sitting comfortably behind an expensive mahogany desk.
He barely looked up from the reports in front of him. "Sit."
Liz complied.
The room remained silent for several moments a report landed heavily on the desk.
"What exactly is this?"
Liz lowered her eyes. "...My recent sales."
"Exactly."
The man folded his arms. "Do you know how much business you’ve lost this month?"
She nodded. "...Yes."
"You’ve been distracted."
"I’m sorry."
"Sorry doesn’t recover contracts."
He stood and slowly walked around the desk. "You used to be my highest performer."
"Now clients are walking away."
"You sometimes miss meetings."
"You hesitate during negotiations."
"You lose deals."
Liz remained quiet.
She knew he wasn’t entirely wrong. Ever since her fiancé had been hospitalized, nothing had been the same.
Every paycheck disappeared into hospital bills and every day became another struggle.
However, there was still more under the surface that the boss failed to see.
"I’ll improve."
"I promise."
Her boss stopped beside her.
"I hope so."
He leaned against the desk. "You’ve borrowed quite a lot from the company."
Liz clenched her hands. "I know."
"And repayment deadlines don’t simply disappear."
"I understand."
His voice hardened. "If you don’t land a major contract soon..."
"...we’ll have to discuss other ways of settling your debt," his fingers traced down her hair, implying something that Liz understood all too well.
She immediately stood. "There won’t be a need."
"I’ll handle it."
She bowed politely. "I won’t disappoint the company again."
Without waiting for permission, she turned and walked out.
Only after the office door closed behind her did she finally release the breath she’d been holding.
Her heartbeat pounded loudly in her ears as she leaned briefly against the hallway wall.
"...Get yourself together," She whispered to herself.
She couldn’t afford to fall apart.
Not now... Not with her fiancé still lying in a hospital bed.
After collecting herself, she began walking toward the elevators.
As she passed the employee lounge... a television mounted on the wall caught her attention.
Several coworkers had gathered around it.
"...breaking news continues surrounding the remarkable rise of the Shadow Reapers..."
Liz slowed as the screen showed aerial footage of the devastated battlefield.
Destroyed streets, collapsed buildings, emergency crews.... and finally the familiar face of a young man.
"The leader of Shadow Reapers, West Einstein, has rapidly become one of the city’s fastest-rising awakened after his gang’s latest victory..."
Liz froze. "...No way..."
Her eyes widened while the news contunued. "...Shadow Reapers has now completed thirty ruins... reaching 109th place within Misty High City’s official gang rankings..."
Coworkers chatted excitedly. "I can’t believe he’s only eighteen."
"They say he built the gang from almost nothing."
"Imagine how much money they’re making now."
Liz barely heard them... she kept staring at the screen. "...It’s him."
Images resurfaced in her mind of the young awakened who had saved her fiancé and given her so much reason to smile when he visited.
"That explains why he has been so busy and difficult to reach..."

~ Later That Night ~
Within a dinning room, Renzhi sat at the head of the long table with eyes fixed on nothing. Every few minutes his fingers clenched around a glass until it shattered in his grip, sending shards scattering across the table.
Lianhua glanced over with concern. "Darling, what’s gotten into you? Are you okay?"
Renzhi muttered the same answer each time. "I’m fine."
Meanwhile, his mind stayed locked on the Shadow Reapers... on the fact that the gang still breathed... and the fact that he would have to attend their party where he would be forced to shake hands with their leader. The thought made fresh rage surge through him, and another cup cracked under his palm.
