Three weeks sounded like plenty of time until Drako looked at everything he needed to accomplish. The Inter-Academy Tournament qualifiers were approaching, his first hybrid technique was still unstable, his transformation needed better control, and the System expected him to develop another ability before the tournament even began. Drako stood alone in the training chamber before sunrise, staring at three reinforced targets. [Tournament Preparation.] [Dragon Blood Strike Stability: 23%.] [Transformation Control: 34%.] [Additional Bloodline Ability: Incomplete.] [Second Hybrid Technique: Undiscovered.] Drako stretched his arms. “Twenty-three percent isn’t enough.” He activated Blood Step. Crimson energy flashed around his legs, and he disappeared. Dragon Strength activated before he reappeared. Golden and crimson energy twisted around his fist. “Dragon Blood Strike!” BOOM! The first target shattered. Pain immediately shot through his shoulder. Drako grabbed his arm. [Technique stability increased: 24%.] “One percent?” [Correct.] Drako sighed. “This is going to be a long morning.” He continued. Each attempt required him to balance two completely different energies. Dragon energy wanted to explode outward with overwhelming force. Vampiric energy moved differently—faster, colder, and more precisely. When he forced either one to dominate, the technique became unstable. Drako eventually realized he needed to let the Vampiric energy accelerate the attack while the Draconic energy delivered the destructive force. After another twenty attempts, his stability reached thirty-one percent. His arm felt like it had been repeatedly struck with a hammer, but Drako smiled. He was improving.
When he left the chamber, Mira was waiting outside. “You know normal people sleep, right?” Drako wiped sweat from his forehead. “Normal people aren’t preparing to win a tournament.” Mira laughed. “Who said you’re winning?” “I did.” “Kaien said the same thing.” Drako’s smile disappeared slightly. “Then one of us is going to be disappointed.” Mira started walking beside him. “You shouldn’t only worry about Kaien. Astra isn’t the only academy participating. Some of the other schools have students who have been training since childhood.” “Good.” Mira looked at him. “You really like fighting stronger people.” “I like knowing where I stand.” Mira became quieter. “Sometimes knowing where you stand isn’t pleasant.” Drako noticed the change in her voice. “You speaking from experience?” Mira looked at him for a moment before smiling again. “Maybe.” She walked ahead. Drako didn’t chase the answer. Everyone had secrets. He had his. Mira had hers. Raizen clearly had something he wasn’t revealing, and Adrian’s technology was becoming more suspicious every day. Eventually, those secrets would come out naturally.
Their morning combat class was different from usual. Instead of individual sparring, the instructor divided everyone into teams. “The Inter-Academy Tournament contains multiple events. Individual combat is only one of them. There will also be team battles, survival tests, objective-based matches, and other challenges that will not be announced beforehand.” Adrian whispered, “Finally, something designed for me.” Raizen looked at him. “You don’t like fighting.” “Exactly. I like winning without getting punched.” Mira laughed. The instructor continued. “Raw strength will not guarantee victory. Teams that cannot cooperate will lose.” Drako immediately understood the lesson. He was growing faster than his friends, but that didn’t mean he could do everything alone. Their group was assigned a capture exercise. A crystal was placed at the center of a simulated forest arena, and two teams had to fight for possession. Drako’s first instinct was to rush toward it. Raizen stopped him. “Too obvious.” Adrian pointed toward several elevated platforms. “Give me thirty seconds.” Mira disappeared between artificial trees. Drako waited. Twenty seconds later, Adrian’s wrist device released three tiny machines that flew above the battlefield. “Opposing team split into two groups. Two protecting the crystal. Two moving toward us.” Drako smiled. “Now?” Raizen drew his sword. “Now.”
The opposing students came through the trees. Drako activated Blood Sense and detected them before they appeared. One attacked from his right. Dragon Scales covered Drako’s forearm as he blocked the strike. Instead of countering with Dragon Strength, he stepped backward. The opponent expected Drako’s usual heavy attack and raised his defense. Crimson energy flashed. Blood Step. Drako disappeared and reappeared behind him, tapping his shoulder hard enough to activate the elimination sensor. [Opponent eliminated.] The second opponent immediately attacked Raizen. Their weapons collided several times before Mira appeared from above and landed behind the student. “Too slow.” She struck the elimination sensor. Adrian laughed through their communication devices. “Two down.” They advanced toward the crystal together. Drako could have rushed ahead, but he remained with his team. The final two opponents defended the objective. Adrian used his drones to distract one. Mira moved around the side while Raizen attacked directly. Drako waited. One defender saw an opening and charged toward Adrian. Drako activated Blood Step, intercepted him, and blocked with Dragon Scales. The opponent jumped backward, expecting Dragon Strength. Drako smiled. “Everybody keeps expecting the same thing.” Instead of attacking, he moved aside. Mira was already behind the opponent. Elimination. Raizen defeated the final defender moments later. Their team captured the crystal. [Team Exercise Complete.] [Experience acquired.] [Team coordination increased.] Drako realized something important. Being unpredictable wasn’t only about combining Dragon and Vampire abilities. It was also about knowing when not to attack.

After class, Kaien approached him in the courtyard. Phoenix flames danced across his fingers. “You’re changing.” Drako looked at him. “You’ve been watching me?” “Everyone has.” Kaien stepped closer. “When you first arrived, you fought like someone who had suddenly been handed power. Now you’re starting to fight like the power actually belongs to you.” Drako smiled. “Worried?” Kaien’s flames grew hotter. “Excited.” Suddenly, Kaien disappeared forward. His fist stopped inches from Drako’s face. Drako hadn’t even activated Blood Sense. “Still faster than you,” Kaien said. Drako activated Blood Step and appeared behind him. “Not by much.” Kaien turned, smiling. Before either could continue, an instructor shouted at them to stop. Kaien walked away laughing. Drako watched him. Kaien was growing too. That was exactly what Drako wanted. He didn’t want rivals who stayed weak while he became stronger. He wanted people who forced him to keep evolving.
That afternoon, the academy held a special lecture about the history of human power. An elderly instructor stood before a holographic map showing different territories. “Humanity’s current strength did not come from one organization. Families, factions, academies, military groups, independent clans, and other organizations all contributed to our survival.” Several symbols appeared. “Among these powers stand the Five Great Families. Their influence stretches far beyond ordinary human territory.” Drako leaned forward. The instructor didn’t reveal every family name, but he discussed the legendary equipment they possessed. “Some Great Families guard Demon-Tier armor and weapons passed down across generations. These treasures are not toys. A weak person holding a powerful weapon is still weak.” Drako remembered the Demon-Tier classification and understood why the academy had never sent beginners anywhere near such creatures. Demon-Tier equipment belonged to another level of the world entirely. “There are also families whose abilities have made them exceptionally dangerous,” the instructor continued. A sword-shaped symbol appeared briefly on the screen. “Some bloodlines can accomplish things ordinary ability users consider impossible.” The symbol disappeared before he explained further. Drako didn’t know the name Blade yet, but one day that family would become deeply connected to his life.
After classes ended, Adrian pulled Drako into an empty room. “I found something.” He activated his wrist device and projected an energy pattern into the air. “This came from the ruins.” Drako recognized the strange frequency Adrian had been studying. “What is it?” “I don’t know. That’s the problem. It doesn’t match any known energy system in the academy database.” Adrian expanded the pattern. “And there’s something else. It wasn’t coming from the sealed door.” Drako frowned. “Where was it coming from?” Adrian pointed downward. “Deeper.” Drako remembered Dragon Sense detecting something beneath them. “Did you tell the instructors?” “Not yet.” “Why?” Adrian hesitated. “Because some information disappears from the academy database whenever I search certain subjects.” Drako stared at him. “Someone is deleting it?” “Or hiding it.” Before Drako could respond, Adrian shut down the projection. Footsteps passed outside. “Later,” Adrian whispered.
That night, Drako returned to training. Instead of practicing Dragon Blood Strike, he focused on Dragon Sense and Blood Sense simultaneously. At first, the information overwhelmed him again. Heartbeats filled his mind while energy signatures appeared everywhere. Drako breathed slowly. “Separate them.” Blood Sense tracked life. Dragon Sense tracked supernatural energy. He stopped trying to process both as one ability. Slowly, the chaos became organized. A heartbeat appeared beyond the wall. Drako could sense the person’s energy around it. Another heartbeat. Another energy signature. Suddenly, the System appeared. [Compatible sensory abilities detected.] [Hybrid development possible.] Drako smiled. “There you are.” He concentrated harder. Golden light briefly appeared in one eye while crimson filled the other. Pain struck his head, but he maintained control. The world transformed. He could sense heartbeats, energy movement, bloodline traces, and the direction of hidden power simultaneously. [Hybrid Technique developing.] [Current completion: 12%.] Drako laughed quietly. “My second hybrid technique.” Then something unexpected appeared within his new perception. Far beyond Astra Academy, an unfamiliar energy signature flashed for less than a second. It wasn’t Phoenix energy. It wasn’t human energy. It wasn’t anything Drako had sensed before. The System immediately reacted. [Unknown foreign energy detected.] [Origin: Unidentified.] Then it vanished. Drako opened his eyes. He didn’t know that the signal was only the smallest hint of a conflict humanity would eventually face—a war connected to beings from another universe and their search for something known as the Eternal Demon-Tier Beast. That future was still far away. Right now, Drako had three weeks, a tournament to prepare for, friends hiding secrets, and two bloodlines he had barely begun to understand. He looked at his status. [Second Hybrid Technique Completion: 12%.] Drako smiled. “Tomorrow, we make it twenty.” The tournament was coming, and Drako intended to enter it as a completely different fighter.
