Drako woke before sunrise with the same thought that had followed him out of the ancient ruins: he had been using his powers wrong. Not completely wrong, but separately. Dragon Strength when he needed power. Dragon Scales when he needed defense. Blood Enhancement when he needed speed. Blood Step when he needed to disappear from an attack. The abilities worked, but during the battle against the Ancient Blood Beast, Drako had discovered something much more important. His Draconic and Vampiric powers didn’t have to remain separate. He could switch between them so quickly that an opponent couldn’t predict what he would do next, and if the System was right, eventually he could truly combine them. Drako sat on the edge of his bed and summoned his status. [Host: Drako.] [Level: 2.] [Draconic Bloodline: Developing.] [Vampiric Bloodline: Developing.] [Abilities: Dragon Strength, Dragon Scales, Dragon Sense, Blood Sense, Blood Enhancement, Blood Step.] [Transformation: Blood-Scaled Form.] [Hybrid Techniques: None.] Drako stared at the final line. “None for now.” He smiled. “Let’s change that.” He dressed and headed toward an isolated training chamber before the other students woke. He locked the door behind him and activated Blood Step. Crimson energy gathered around his legs. He disappeared and reappeared beside a training target. Before the crimson energy vanished, he activated Dragon Strength and punched. BOOM! The target flew across the chamber and crashed against the reinforced wall. [Ability transition successful.] [Blood Step → Dragon Strength.] Drako frowned. “Transition. Not combination.” [Correct.] “Then show me how to combine them.” [Hybrid techniques cannot simply be granted. Host must discover compatible bloodline interactions.] Drako smiled slightly. “So I have to figure it out myself.” That made him even more interested.
For nearly an hour, Drako experimented. Blood Step into Dragon Strength. Dragon Scales combined with Blood Enhancement. Blood Sense while using Dragon Sense. Some combinations worked better than others. Blood Sense allowed him to detect living movement, while Dragon Sense detected supernatural energy and ancient bloodline traces. When he activated both simultaneously, the amount of information nearly overwhelmed him. Drako immediately deactivated them and grabbed his head. “Definitely need practice.” He tried Dragon Scales and Blood Enhancement next. Golden scales covered his forearms while crimson energy traveled underneath them. His muscles tightened. His body became faster without sacrificing defense. [Partial compatibility detected.] Drako’s eyes narrowed. “Partial?” He concentrated harder. Crimson energy began flowing between the golden scales. Pain suddenly shot through his arms. Drako stopped. [Warning: Forced synchronization may damage Host.] “I’m not forcing it.” He looked at his hands. “I’m teaching them to cooperate.” He remembered his evolution. When his body transformed, the Dragon and Vampire energies had initially fought each other. The more he tried forcing them together, the worse the pain became. Only when he allowed both energies to move naturally had the transformation stabilized. Drako closed his eyes. Instead of pushing the energies together, he activated Blood Enhancement first and allowed the Vampiric energy to circulate. Then he slowly activated Dragon Scales around it. Golden scales appeared without interrupting the crimson flow. [Compatibility increasing.] Drako opened his eyes. “There you go.” His fist struck the target. The impact was stronger than before, but more importantly, his arm moved faster. He attacked again and again, learning how the two abilities responded to each other.
The training chamber door suddenly opened. Raizen stood there. Drako immediately returned his arm to normal. “You ever knock?” Raizen looked at the destroyed training target. “You ever train normally?” Drako laughed. “Fair point.” Raizen entered and drew his sword. “Fight me.” “Again?” “You’re different from the last time.” Drako stepped into the center of the chamber. “You’re hiding something too.” Raizen’s expression didn’t change. “Everyone hides something.” Drako remembered the strange feeling he’d had around his friends inside the ruins. Adrian had been unusually interested in the energy readings. Mira had recognized something among the ancient markings, although she hadn’t admitted it. And Raizen was clearly more than an ordinary swordsman. Drako didn’t push him. Not yet. Raizen attacked. His blade moved quickly toward Drako’s shoulder. Blood Sense activated. Drako dodged, but Raizen immediately changed direction. Dragon Scales covered Drako’s forearm. CLANG! The sword struck the scales. Drako countered with Dragon Strength, but Raizen moved away. “Predictable,” Raizen said. Drako smiled. “That’s what I’m trying to fix.” Raizen attacked again. This time Drako activated Blood Step. Crimson energy flashed and he appeared behind Raizen. Raizen spun instantly, expecting Dragon Strength. Instead, Drako used Blood Step again and changed direction. Raizen’s eyes widened. Drako appeared on his left and struck with a scaled fist. Raizen blocked, but the impact pushed him backward. “Better,” Raizen said. Drako felt something click inside him. He wasn’t simply switching abilities anymore. He was creating a rhythm between them.

Raizen attacked faster. Drako activated Blood Enhancement and Dragon Scales simultaneously. Crimson energy moved beneath the golden armor covering his arms. He blocked one strike, avoided another, then used Blood Step. Instead of allowing the Vampiric energy to disappear when he reappeared, Drako pulled it upward through his body and into his right arm. Dragon Strength activated at the same moment. Golden and crimson energy wrapped around his fist. The System flashed. [Bloodline synchronization detected.] Drako punched. Raizen barely moved his sword into position. BOOM! The impact sent him sliding across the chamber. His boots scraped against the floor before he finally stopped. Drako stared at his fist. Golden energy and crimson energy were still twisted around each other. [Hybrid Technique created.] [Please designate technique.] Drako smiled. “Dragon Blood Strike.” [Technique registered: Dragon Blood Strike.] [Dragon Blood Strike: Combines Draconic physical force with Vampiric acceleration to create an unpredictable high-speed impact.] Raizen lowered his sword. “That attack was different.” “It was.” “Do it again.” Drako tried. Pain immediately shot through his arm. The energies collapsed. [Warning: Hybrid Technique currently unstable.] [Recommended usage: Limited.] Drako shook his arm. “Apparently I can’t spam it.” Raizen sheathed his sword. “Good.” Drako looked at him. “Good?” “If power comes without limits, you become careless.” Raizen walked toward the door. Before leaving, he stopped. “And Drako?” “Yeah?” “Whatever you’re becoming, make sure you’re still the one controlling it.” Drako watched him leave. He knew Raizen was talking about more than training.
Later that morning, Drako joined Adrian and Mira for breakfast. Raizen arrived shortly afterward. Before anyone could speak, the academy screens activated. The headmaster appeared. “Due to the discovery beneath the eastern territory, Astra Academy will begin accelerated combat preparation. In three weeks, qualifying matches will begin for the Inter-Academy Tournament.” The cafeteria exploded with conversation. Drako looked up. “Tournament?” Adrian grinned. “Now we’re talking.” Mira shook her head. “You get excited about everything dangerous.” “Not everything.” Adrian paused. “Mostly everything.” Kaien entered the cafeteria with several Phoenix guards. He had clearly heard the announcement. His golden eyes immediately found Drako. Kaien walked toward their table. “Enter the tournament.” Drako looked at him. “Planning on asking nicely?” “No.” Kaien smiled. “I want to fight you when you’re actually prepared.” “What makes you think you’ll reach me?” Drako asked. Kaien’s hand ignited with a small Phoenix flame. “Because nobody here is stopping me.” Raizen quietly looked at him. Kaien noticed. “Maybe one person.” Drako smiled. The rivalry was already growing.
Before Kaien could leave, two unfamiliar students entered the cafeteria wearing expensive academy uniforms with family symbols Drako didn’t recognize. Students around them immediately began whispering about the Great Families and powerful factions sending observers after the ruins were discovered. Drako realized Astra Academy was becoming more important than it had been only days ago. He didn’t know it yet, but students connected to families such as the Veyrox and Greens would eventually walk these same halls, carrying secrets just as dangerous as his own. For now, however, Drako had a tournament ahead of him. His System appeared. [New Quest Chain.] [Tournament Preparation.] [Objective One: Stabilize Dragon Blood Strike.] [Objective Two: Increase transformation control.] [Objective Three: Develop one additional Draconic or Vampiric ability.] [Special Condition: Discover a second Hybrid Technique.] Drako’s eyes lit up. “Now that’s more like it.”
That evening, he returned to the training chamber. He transformed only his right arm first. Golden scales appeared while his nails sharpened into dark claws. Then he returned the arm to normal. He transformed his eyes next—one gold, one crimson—then changed them back. He was learning that he didn’t need his entire Blood-Scaled Form every time. His body belonged to him. He could alter individual parts when needed and return to a completely human appearance afterward. Finally, Drako activated his full transformation. Pain still moved through him, but nowhere near as badly as the first evolution. He remained completely conscious. Golden scales spread across parts of his body while crimson markings appeared beneath them. His senses sharpened. His strength increased. He looked at the training target and activated Blood Step. Crimson energy gathered. Dragon Strength followed. The two energies twisted together. “Dragon Blood Strike.” Drako disappeared. BOOM! His fist destroyed the target completely. [Hybrid stability increased.] Drako returned to normal and smiled. He had unlocked his first true combination, but it was only the beginning. Someday he would possess dozens of Draconic and Vampiric abilities, and his enemies would never know which one—or which combination—was coming next. Three weeks remained until the tournament qualifiers. Drako clenched his fist. “Let’s see how much stronger I can become before then.”
