The assembly hall remained silent after the headmaster announced the expedition. Drako stood beside Adrian, Mira, and Raizen while Kaien remained several steps away with members of the Phoenix Family delegation. Nobody knew exactly what waited beneath the academy's eastern territory, but the expressions on the instructors' faces made one thing clear: this wasn't an ordinary training exercise. The headmaster raised his hand. "The ruins were discovered beneath the eastern territory three days ago. Our researchers detected an energy signature that predates every recorded human civilization. Because of the possible danger, only selected students will participate." A list appeared across the large screen. Drako's name was there. So were Adrian, Mira, Raizen, and Kaien. Drako looked at his friends. "Looks like we're going." Adrian smiled. "I was hoping you'd say that." Mira crossed her arms. "You just finished your first evolution. Are you sure your body can handle another mission?" Drako nodded. "I'm fine." Raizen studied him. "You don't look fine." Drako laughed. "I'll survive." A blue screen appeared before him. [Main Quest: Ancient Bloodline Ruins.] [Objective: Enter the ruins and discover the source of the ancient energy.] [Additional Objective: Unlock at least one new bloodline ability.] [Warning: Unknown entities detected.] Drako's expression changed. "Unknown entities?" The System gave him no further explanation.
The expedition began that evening. The selected students traveled with several instructors through the forest surrounding Astra Academy. The deeper they traveled, the colder the air became. Drako activated Blood Sense occasionally, but nothing dangerous appeared nearby. Even Kaien, who normally carried himself with complete confidence, seemed more alert than usual. After nearly an hour, they reached a massive stone entrance hidden beneath the side of a cliff. Ancient symbols covered the doors and surrounding walls. Some resembled dragons with enormous wings. Others were circular markings connected by lines that reminded Drako of flowing blood. His body reacted immediately. Golden energy moved through his chest. Crimson energy followed. Drako stepped closer and touched one of the symbols. The entire entrance shook. Everyone turned toward him. "What did you do?" Kaien asked. Drako pulled his hand away. "I don't know." The symbols began glowing. A deep grinding sound echoed through the forest as the enormous stone doors slowly opened. The instructors immediately raised their weapons. "Everyone stays behind us." Drako followed with his friends as they entered. Darkness swallowed the light from outside. Ancient murals covered the walls, showing warriors, beasts, cities, and battles from civilizations none of them recognized. Drako noticed one mural depicting a massive dragon surrounded by warriors. Farther down was another showing pale humanoid creatures with crimson eyes and sharp fangs. Vampires. Then he saw something that made him stop. Between the Dragon and Vampire murals stood a single warrior. The warrior had one golden eye and one crimson eye. Drako stared at it. Mira noticed. "What is it?" Drako pointed toward the mural. Kaien stepped closer and immediately became serious. "That's impossible." Drako turned toward him. "Why?" Kaien hesitated. "The Phoenix Family has ancient records describing something similar." "What do they say?" Before Kaien could answer, the ground shook.
A roar echoed through the ruins. The instructors immediately ordered everyone into formation. Something moved beyond the darkness ahead. A creature slowly emerged. It resembled a massive wolf, but black stone-like armor covered its body and purple energy burned behind its eyes. One instructor stepped forward and attacked. His weapon struck the creature's shoulder, but the beast barely moved. It swung one enormous paw and threw the instructor into the wall. "Stay back!" another instructor shouted. Drako activated Blood Sense. The creature's heartbeat was strange, almost as though only part of it was alive. The System appeared. [Unknown creature detected.] [Classification: Ancient Blood Beast.] [Threat Assessment: Dangerous to current Host.] Drako immediately understood the warning. This wasn't some Demon-Tier monster he had no business fighting yet. It was stronger than the low-level beasts he'd faced, but still something he could learn from if he remained careful. The instructors engaged it first. Raizen drew his sword while Mira prepared her blades. Adrian activated a device around his wrist. Kaien's hands began radiating heat. The creature broke through an instructor's attack and charged toward the students. Drako stepped forward and activated Dragon Scales. Golden scales spread across his forearms. The beast struck him. BOOM! Drako flew backward several meters and hit the floor. His arms burned from the impact, but the scales had protected his bones. "Strong," Drako whispered. The beast charged again. Blood Enhancement activated. Crimson energy rushed through Drako's muscles, increasing his speed. He moved aside and punched the creature's ribs using Dragon Strength. The strike landed, but the beast barely moved. Its armored body was too strong. The creature spun and attacked again. Drako sensed the movement with Blood Sense, but his body wasn't fast enough to completely avoid it. A claw caught his shoulder and knocked him sideways. Suddenly, a cold sensation moved through his veins. [Vampiric Bloodline responding to danger.] [New ability available.] [Blood Step unlocked.] [Blood Step: Convert Vampiric energy into a short burst of extreme movement.] Drako's eyes widened. The creature attacked again. "Blood Step." Crimson energy flashed around his legs. Drako disappeared from where he stood and reappeared several meters away. Adrian stared. "What was that?" Even Kaien looked surprised. Drako didn't answer. He was staring at his own legs. Blood Step wasn't ordinary speed. For a fraction of a second, his body accelerated so quickly that the world seemed frozen.
The beast turned toward him. Drako smiled. "Again." It charged. Drako activated Blood Step and disappeared from its path. This time he reappeared behind it. Golden energy gathered around his fist. Dragon Strength. He punched the creature's back. CRACK! One section of its black armor fractured. The beast roared. Drako stepped backward. Something clicked in his mind. He didn't have to fight as only a Dragon or only a Vampire. His Vampiric abilities could create openings for his Draconic abilities. Blood Step gave him speed. Dragon Strength gave him power. If he learned to switch between them quickly enough, enemies wouldn't know what was coming. The beast attacked again. Drako used Blood Step to avoid its claws, then activated Dragon Scales when its tail came from another direction. The tail struck his armored forearm. Drako immediately countered with Dragon Strength. The beast stumbled. Kaien watched closely. "He's changing fighting styles in the middle of every attack." Raizen heard him. "That's what makes him difficult to read." The creature released a burst of purple energy. Drako tried using Blood Sense, but the energy overwhelmed his senses. He couldn't predict it. The blast struck him and sent him crashing into the ground. Mira rushed forward. "Drako!" Raizen intercepted the beast with his sword while Adrian created an energy barrier between it and Drako. Drako pushed himself upright. His shoulder hurt badly, but Blood Enhancement had already started accelerating his recovery. He realized another important lesson. Combining abilities didn't make him invincible. He still needed experience using them.

Kaien stepped forward. Phoenix flames surrounded his arms. "You've experimented enough." Drako looked at him. "I wasn't experimenting." Kaien smiled. "You definitely were." The Ancient Blood Beast charged. Raizen attacked its damaged armor. Mira moved around its opposite side while Adrian's equipment distracted it with several energy pulses. Kaien released a controlled wave of Phoenix fire toward the cracked section of armor. The beast screamed as the armor weakened. Drako saw the opening. Blood Step. Crimson energy flashed. He appeared beside the damaged section and activated Dragon Strength. His fist struck directly through the fractured armor. BOOM! The creature collapsed. Silence returned to the ruins. Drako breathed heavily while the others remained prepared in case it stood again. It didn't. The System appeared. [Ancient Blood Beast defeated through group combat.] [Combat contribution recognized.] [Experience acquired.] [Blood Step successfully unlocked.] Then another message appeared. [Draconic Bloodline responding.] [New ability unlocked: Dragon Sense.] [Dragon Sense: Detect Draconic bloodline energy, ancient creatures, magical traces, and certain hidden energy sources.] Drako closed his eyes. Immediately, the ruins changed. He could feel streams of ancient energy running through the walls like veins. Some were faint. Others traveled deeper underground. Then he detected something beneath them. Something enormous. Drako opened his eyes. "There's something below us." The lead instructor turned. "How do you know?" Drako hesitated. "I can feel it." Kaien stepped closer. "How powerful?" Drako concentrated again. The energy wasn't Demon-Tier. It didn't feel like a normal beast classification at all. It felt ancient, sealed, and distant, as though something had left an imprint beneath the ruins thousands of years ago. "I don't know," Drako answered. "But I don't think we should go deeper without knowing what it is." The instructor nodded. "Then we don't." Drako was surprised. "We're leaving?" "We're investigators, not idiots. We found something outside the mission's expected threat level. We report it and return with specialists." Drako respected that answer.
As everyone prepared to leave, Drako's Dragon Sense suddenly detected a second energy signature. This one was weaker but somehow familiar. Crimson energy responded inside him. Then golden energy followed. Drako turned toward a sealed stone doorway at the end of the chamber. The mural above it showed the same warrior with one golden eye and one crimson eye. The System appeared. [Hidden bloodline resonance detected.] [Current Host strength insufficient.] [Access denied.] Drako stared at the door. For the first time, the System itself was telling him he wasn't strong enough. Instead of frustrating him, it made him curious. Whatever was behind that door could wait. He would become stronger and return. Kaien walked beside him as they headed toward the exit. "You unlocked something in there, didn't you?" Drako looked at him. "Maybe." Kaien smiled. "Keep your secrets." A small Phoenix flame appeared above his palm. "I'll figure them out eventually." Drako smiled back. "You can try." Neither noticed Raizen watching them quietly from behind, his hand resting against his sword as a strange symbol briefly appeared beneath his sleeve before disappearing. Adrian was also hiding something: his wrist device had secretly recorded an energy frequency inside the ruins that didn't match anything in Astra Academy's database. Mira remained unusually quiet, having recognized one of the ancient symbols carved into the wall. Every member of Drako's group had secrets. None of them knew how deeply those secrets would eventually connect.
When Drako returned to his room that night, he activated Blood Step several times, learning how quickly he could switch between it and Dragon Strength. Crimson flash. Golden strike. Dragon Scales. Blood Step again. The combinations felt almost limitless. [Host is beginning Dual Combat Adaptation.] Drako smiled. "So I can mix them however I want?" [As mastery increases, Draconic and Vampiric abilities may be combined into unique hybrid techniques.] That was exactly what Drako wanted. He didn't want to fight like a Dragon. He didn't want to fight like a Vampire. He wanted to fight like himself. An opponent might prepare for Dragon Strength only for Drako to disappear using Vampiric speed. They might prepare for his speed only to hit Dragon Scales. And someday, he wouldn't merely switch between the two. He would fuse them. Drako returned to his normal appearance and looked toward the distant ruins through his window. Somewhere beneath the earth, that sealed door was waiting for him. He wasn't strong enough to open it yet. That was fine. He had time. Drako clenched his fist as golden energy briefly mixed with crimson around his fingers. "I'll come back when I'm ready." The two energies disappeared, and Drako smiled. His real training had only begun.
