The announcement remained on Drako’s academy terminal long after he first read it. Mira arrived first with both short blades at her waist. Kaien entered several minutes later, Phoenix energy faintly radiating from his body. Ruben Veyrox arrived last with a training sword across his back and the same relaxed expression he always seemed to wear. Kaien crossed his arms. “You’re late.” Ruben glanced toward the clock. “I’m three minutes early.” “You should’ve been earlier.” Ruben smiled. “Does the Phoenix Family teach people to argue with clocks?” Flames appeared around Kaien’s fingers. Mira sighed. “We haven’t even started and I already regret this team.” Drako stepped between them. “Save it for the people we’re supposed to fight.” Kaien’s flames disappeared. “As long as he stays out of my way.” Ruben nodded. “I was going to tell you the same thing.” Before Kaien could answer, the tournament instructor entered. A holographic city appeared above the floor. “Thirty-two teams will participate in the third qualifier. Each team contains four competitors. Your objective is to enter the ruined-city combat zone, locate an energy core, and deliver it to your assigned extraction point. Cores are protected by academy combat machines. Other teams may steal your core. Alliances are permitted. Betrayal is permitted. At least two members of your team must remain active when you reach extraction.” Kaien smiled. “Simple.” The instructor looked directly at him. “Teams that depend entirely on individual strength usually fail.” Ruben glanced at Kaien. “He means you.” “Keep talking.” Drako shook his head. This was going to be a long qualifier.

Moments later, Team 17 transported into the artificial ruined city. Broken towers surrounded them. Abandoned vehicles filled the streets, while underground tunnels and damaged bridges connected different sections of the battlefield. [QUALIFIER BEGINNING.] [3.] [2.] [1.] [BEGIN.] Kaien immediately started walking toward the center. Drako grabbed his shoulder. “Where are you going?” “Toward the core.” “Without checking anything?” “We’re wasting time.” Drako activated Blood Sense. Dozens of heartbeats appeared throughout the city. Then Dragon Sense joined it. His right eye turned gold and his left crimson as Dragon Blood Vision activated. Energy signatures spread across his perception. “Three teams nearby. And there’s an energy trap in that alley.” Kaien looked toward the apparently empty path. “I knew that.” Ruben picked up a piece of metal and threw it into the alley. Blue energy immediately exploded from both walls. BOOM! The metal disappeared. Ruben looked at Kaien. “Obviously.” Mira covered a laugh. Kaien ignored them. Drako pointed toward the rooftops. “We go above.” They climbed through a damaged building and crossed the city from roof to roof. Drako used Dragon Blood Vision to identify traps while Mira moved ahead as their scout. Ruben remained near the middle, already carrying six copied abilities: wind manipulation, stone armor, electricity, enhanced speed, an energy barrier, and one ability Drako hadn’t seen yet. Kaien noticed too. “What’s the sixth?” Ruben smiled. “You’ll find out if I need it.”

They reached a collapsed intersection when Drako suddenly stopped. “People ahead.” Four students stepped from behind ruined vehicles. One created a wall of ice while another spread nearly invisible energy threads between the buildings. “Hand over your markers,” their leader said. Kaien stepped forward. “Come take them.” Phoenix flames exploded from his hands. The ice user raised a massive barrier. Fire collided with ice, filling the street with steam. Drako activated Blood Sense. The steam blocked his vision, but four heartbeats remained perfectly clear. “Mira, left!” Mira disappeared into the fog. Metal struck metal. Another opponent rushed Drako carrying a heavy hammer. Dragon Scales spread across Drako’s forearm. CLANG! The impact pushed him backward. “Strong defense,” the student said. Drako smiled. “Thanks.” Blood Step activated. Crimson energy flashed and Drako disappeared. The student turned, expecting him behind. Drako appeared to his right and struck the hammer with controlled Dragon Strength. The weapon flew from the student’s hands, but before Drako could finish, an energy thread wrapped around his ankle. “Got you!” More threads shot through the steam. Suddenly, a powerful wind changed their direction. Ruben stood with one hand extended. “You should probably use something harder to redirect.” Electricity appeared around Ruben’s other hand and traveled through one of the threads. The thread user’s defensive shield activated. “One down,” Ruben said. Kaien blasted through the ice wall while Mira eliminated another opponent from behind. The remaining two retreated. Kaien started after them. Drako stopped him. “Let them go. We need the core.” Kaien frowned but listened.

Ten minutes later, the System flashed. [Large mechanical energy detected.] The ground shook. A four-meter combat machine dropped from a damaged building and landed in front of them. BOOM! [ACADEMY GUARDIAN.] [Defeat Guardian to access Energy Core.] Kaien’s Phoenix flames immediately grew brighter. “Finally.” The Guardian fired an energy blast. Ruben created a barrier. BOOM! Cracks spread across it instantly. “Strong,” Ruben muttered. Mira moved toward its left side while Drako activated Dragon Blood Vision. Energy pathways appeared inside the machine. “Core beneath the chest armor! Knee joints are weaker!” Kaien launched Phoenix fire against its chest. The armor turned red but remained intact. Ruben copied Kaien’s Phoenix ability and released his own flames. They were noticeably weaker. Kaien looked offended. “My fire looks terrible on you.” Ruben shrugged. “Still burns.” The Guardian swung one massive arm. Drako activated Dragon Density through his legs and Dragon Scales across both arms. BOOM! The strike drove his feet into the ground but failed to send him flying. [Dragon Density proficiency increased.] “Mira! Right knee!” Mira attacked immediately. Both blades struck the joint. The Guardian turned toward her. Ruben activated enhanced speed and appeared between them, covering his body in stone armor. The Guardian smashed him across the arena. Ruben crashed through a damaged wall, his shield flickering. Kaien’s expression changed instantly. The joking disappeared. “I’ll open the chest.” Drako nodded. “I’ll hit the core.” Ruben climbed from the rubble. “I’ll hold it still.” Mira spun her blades. “Then I’ll take its legs.”

For the first time, nobody argued. Mira moved first, attacking both knee joints until the Guardian’s movements slowed. Ruben used wind to push its upper body backward, then switched to his energy barrier and trapped one of its arms. Kaien gathered Phoenix fire between both hands. “Move!” Flames exploded against the Guardian’s chest. BOOM! The reinforced armor cracked open. Drako activated Blood Step. Crimson energy gathered around his legs while Dragon Strength entered his right arm. Then an idea hit him. He activated Dragon Density in the same fist. His arm became heavier without becoming slower yet. [Compatible Draconic abilities detected.] Drako smiled. “Later.” Blood Step flashed. He appeared directly in front of the Guardian. Golden and crimson energy twisted around his fist. “Dragon Blood Strike!” BOOM! His fist shattered the damaged armor, exposing the core beneath it. Drako’s wrist screamed with pain. Mira reacted instantly, throwing one blade directly into the opening. CRACK! The core shattered. The Guardian froze and collapsed. [Guardian defeated.] [Energy Core available.] Ruben immediately grabbed the glowing core. An alarm sounded throughout the city. [CORE ACQUIRED.] [ALL TEAMS NOTIFIED.] Drako slowly turned toward Ruben. “You grabbed it before we planned how to escape.” Ruben looked at the core, then at Drako. “I now see the problem.” Blood Sense activated. Heartbeats were moving toward them from every direction. “Three teams coming fast.” Kaien smiled. “Good.” Mira sighed. “Why are you like this?”

The first enemy team reached them within seconds. This time Team 17 didn’t need a plan. Drako shouted, “Above!” Ruben instantly created a barrier as an energy blast struck from a rooftop. “Left!” Kaien’s Phoenix flames forced two students away. Mira disappeared through the opening. Ruben used wind to knock another attacker off balance, and Drako used Blood Step to intercept a student reaching for the core. More enemies appeared from behind. “Kaien!” Drako shouted. Kaien didn’t ask why. Phoenix fire flew past Drako’s shoulder exactly where Dragon Blood Vision had detected an approaching enemy. “Ruben, barrier!” An energy shield appeared in front of Mira before a projectile could hit her. Something was changing. They were beginning to understand one another. Kaien stopped trying to fight everyone alone. Ruben used his copied abilities to protect the group instead of showing how many powers he possessed. Mira attacked wherever Drako’s senses found openings. Drako stopped thinking of them as separate fighters and started reading the entire battlefield.

They reached the extraction district with all four members active, but one final team blocked the road. Their leader stepped forward. “Give us the core and we’ll let you keep your markers.” Ruben handed the core to Drako. Kaien’s flames appeared. Mira drew both blades. Drako smiled. “You can try taking it.” The battle lasted less than a minute. Kaien shattered their defensive formation with a concentrated Phoenix burst. Mira eliminated their fastest fighter before he could reach Drako. Ruben switched between wind, enhanced speed, and electricity so quickly that two opponents were immobilized before they understood what had happened. Their leader charged Drako. Dragon Blood Vision tracked his energy. Drako used Blood Step, appeared beside him, and stopped a scaled fist directly against his defensive shield. “Done?” The student looked around at his eliminated teammates and lowered his weapon. “Done.” Team 17 entered the extraction zone. [ENERGY CORE DELIVERED.] [TEAM 17 QUALIFIED.] [ACTIVE MEMBERS: 4/4.] The audience erupted when they returned to the Grand Arena. Adrian rushed toward them. “You actually worked together?” Drako nodded. “Eventually.” Kaien pointed toward Ruben. “He nearly ruined everything when he grabbed the core.” Ruben stared at him. “I carried the core halfway across the city.” “Exactly. Reckless.” Mira looked at Drako. “Please tell me we never have to do this again.” Drako laughed. “You loved it.” “I absolutely did not.”

The System appeared. [Cooperative Combat milestone achieved.] [Potential Allies updated.] [Mira.] [Ruben Veyrox.] [Kaien.] [Additional compatible allies remain unidentified.] Drako dismissed the notification. He didn’t need the System to tell him something had changed. Ruben and Kaien were still rivals. Mira still carried secrets. Drako still didn’t completely trust anyone with the truth about his System. But inside that ruined city, they had protected one another without hesitation. They were becoming something more than competitors. The tournament board activated. [THIRD QUALIFIER COMPLETE.] [FOURTH QUALIFIER ANNOUNCEMENT TOMORROW.] Before Drako could check the remaining names, Dragon Blood Vision detected an unusual technological energy signature from the observation balcony. A boy wearing a dark-green uniform stood beside a Green Family representative. Several holographic screens floated around his wrist. Adrian noticed him and froze. “No way.” Drako looked at him. “What?” Adrian pointed upward. “That’s Teck Green.” The boy looked directly at Drako. For several seconds, neither moved. Then Teck smiled slightly and turned toward the exit. Drako didn’t know why the Green Family’s only son had been watching him, but something told him they would meet soon. He was right. Teck Green had seen enough. Tomorrow, he would enter Astra Academy, and another person destined to stand beside Drako was about to step into his life.
