The fourth tournament qualifier wasn’t scheduled until the following afternoon, giving Drako and the others time to recover from the ruined-city battle. Drako should have been resting, but the System’s newest messages made that nearly impossible. [Next Draconic ability approaching unlock condition.] [Next Vampiric ability approaching unlock condition.] He sat on his bed staring at the notifications. “What are the conditions?” [Draconic ability requires increased physical pressure and combat adaptation.] [Vampiric ability requires increased mastery of blood energy.] Drako smiled. “So you’re not just giving them to me.” [Correct. Abilities must be awakened through development of the Host’s bloodlines.] That was exactly how Drako wanted it. His System accelerated his growth, but he still had to earn what he unlocked. He stood and partially transformed. Golden scales appeared across his right arm while his left remained completely human. His right eye turned crimson, activating enhanced Vampiric perception, while the rest of his face remained unchanged. Drako returned both to normal. [Transformation Control: 63%.] The first evolution had felt like his body was being ripped apart. Now he could manipulate individual parts almost naturally. He knew future evolutions would be much worse. The stronger he became, the more violently his body would need to change. But once he mastered an evolution, the form became his to control.

When Drako entered the academy cafeteria, nearly everyone was talking about the same person. Adrian rushed toward him before he could even sit down. “He’s here.” Drako grabbed some food. “Who?” “Teck Green.” Drako stopped. “The Green Family kid?” Adrian looked personally offended. “Not just some Green Family kid. Their only son.” Mira and Raizen were already sitting nearby. Draxen had joined them as well, which was becoming surprisingly normal. “He’s transferring to Astra,” Draxen said. Drako sat across from him. “During the tournament?” “Apparently.” Adrian immediately started explaining. “The Green Family controls some of the most advanced technology humanity has. Computers, games, communications, ships, artificial environments, weapons systems—” Mira interrupted. “Breathe.” Adrian ignored her. “Their technology is used across multiple worlds. They can travel farther than most human organizations without relying on public transport networks.” Drako remembered seeing the Green crest during the tournament. “And Teck is their only son?” Draxen nodded. “Which means everybody wants something from him.” “That sounds annoying.” A voice behind Drako answered, “It is.”

Drako turned. The boy from the observation platform stood there wearing a dark green academy uniform modified with thin metallic lines. He looked around their age. Several small holographic screens floated beside his wrist before disappearing. “Teck Green,” he said. Adrian looked like someone had introduced him to a legendary warrior. Teck noticed. “Please don’t ask me about computers immediately.” Adrian closed his mouth. Mira laughed. Teck looked toward Draxen. “Draxen Veyrox.” Draxen smiled. “Teck.” “Still collecting abilities?” “Still collecting machines?” “Machines last longer.” “Abilities are more fun.” Drako realized they clearly knew of each other even if they weren’t close. Teck turned toward him. “And you’re Drako.” Drako smiled. “Everybody keeps saying that like I don’t know my own name.” Teck sat beside them without asking. “You’re the reason I transferred.” The table became quiet. Drako raised an eyebrow. “Why?” Teck activated a hologram showing Drako’s Dragon Blood Strike from the previous qualifier. Golden and crimson energies twisted together around his fist. “This.”

Drako immediately became cautious. “You recorded me?” “The academy records every tournament match.” Teck expanded the image. “Your energy shouldn’t behave like this.” Draxen leaned forward. “I told him something similar.” Teck continued. “Two different energy signatures are operating inside your body, but they aren’t simply coexisting. They’re learning to interact.” Drako’s expression remained neutral. He wasn’t going to reveal the System. Teck looked at Draxen. “And you can’t copy either one.” Draxen frowned. “How do you know that?” “I watched you try.” “You really do record everything.” Teck smiled. “Information matters.” Drako looked at the hologram. “So you transferred schools because my energy looks strange?” “Partly.” Teck closed the display. “Astra Academy has suddenly become very interesting. Ancient ruins are discovered beneath its territory. The Phoenix Family sends Kaien. A Veyrox descendant capable of holding six abilities enters the tournament. Then someone with an unclassified dual energy appears.” Drako noticed Teck hadn’t mentioned the Azunakkii. “Anything else?” Teck studied him for a second. “Probably.”

The conversation ended when alarms sounded from the training grounds. Students hurried outside. An instructor announced that a malfunction had occurred inside one of the tournament simulation systems. Several combat machines were still active even though their safety restrictions had shut down. Teck sighed. “That shouldn’t happen.” Adrian looked at him. “Green technology?” “Some of it.” Teck immediately headed toward the arena. Drako and the others followed. Inside, three training machines had trapped two younger students against a wall. Instructors were trying to disable the system remotely, but the machines weren’t responding. One raised its weapon. Drako moved first. Blood Step flashed. He appeared between the students and the machine as Dragon Scales spread across his arms. BOOM! The energy blast struck him and pushed him backward. “Get them out!” Mira rushed toward the students. Raizen drew his sword. Draxen activated an energy barrier. Kaien arrived from another entrance, Phoenix flames already surrounding his hands. “I leave for ten minutes and you start without me?”

Teck walked directly into the arena. Drako shouted, “Stay back!” Teck didn’t stop. He raised his right hand. Tiny metallic particles flowed from his sleeve and assembled into six floating devices around him. Blue holographic lines connected them. The first machine fired. A transparent barrier appeared instantly. BOOM! The attack disappeared against it. Adrian stared. “What kind of shield is that?” Teck moved his fingers. Two devices separated and attached themselves to the attacking machine. “Mine.” The machine froze. Teck’s eyes moved rapidly across floating streams of code. “Someone removed the safety restrictions manually.” Drako looked at him. “Someone did this intentionally?” “Yes.” The second machine charged. Kaien released Phoenix fire, knocking it sideways. Raizen attacked its leg joint. Draxen copied Kaien’s fire, but his version was noticeably weaker. “Phoenix abilities are annoying to copy,” Draxen muttered. Kaien looked offended. “Don’t insult my fire.” “Your fire insulted itself.”

The third machine suddenly targeted Teck. Drako’s Dragon Blood Vision activated. He saw energy gathering inside its chest. “Teck, move!” Teck didn’t. Instead, he looked directly at the machine. “Three seconds.” “Three seconds for what?” Drako asked. “For me to own it.” The machine fired. Drako used Blood Step and appeared in front of Teck, blocking with Dragon Scales. The impact cracked several scales. Pain traveled through his arm. “Two seconds,” Teck said. Drako stared at him. “You’re counting?” “One.” The machine froze. Its weapon lowered. Teck smiled. “Done.” All three machines suddenly turned toward the academy’s control tower. “I have their systems.” Adrian looked amazed. “You hacked three military-grade training units during combat.” Teck shrugged. “They’re old.”

Drako’s Dragon Blood Vision remained active. Something strange appeared inside one disabled machine—a faint foreign energy trace. His expression changed. It felt similar to what he’d sensed outside Astra Academy days earlier. “Teck.” “Yeah?” “Open that one’s chest.” Teck commanded the machine’s armor to separate. Inside was a small black object attached to its control system. Teck frowned. “That’s not academy technology.” Adrian stepped closer. “What is it?” Teck scanned it. The holographic display immediately filled with corrupted symbols. Then every screen shut off. “Interesting.” Drako hated how calmly Teck said that word. “Can you identify it?” “Not here.” Teck removed the object using a mechanical tool. “But whoever installed it knew enough about Green architecture to bypass the safety system.” Draxen’s expression became serious. “Could another Green have done it?” Teck shook his head. “Maybe. But they’d have easier ways.”

The instructors arrived and took control of the arena. Teck surrendered the device after secretly copying its data first. Drako noticed but said nothing. Outside, Teck approached him. “You sensed that device before I found it.” Drako remained silent. Teck smiled. “Another secret.” “You have plenty yourself.” “Correct.” Teck extended his hand. “Then we’ll get along.” Drako shook it. The System suddenly appeared. [Unusual technological energy detected.] [Analysis unavailable.] [Host has encountered individual: Teck Green.] [Potential ally.] Drako dismissed the message. He didn’t need the System to tell him that Teck was unusual.

That afternoon, the tournament board updated. Teck stood beside the group as the next announcement appeared. [FOURTH QUALIFIER: INDIVIDUAL COMBAT.] [64 competitors → 32 competitors.] Drako searched for his name. His opponent appeared. Drako vs. Rank 41 — Selene Voss. Adrian became quiet. “That’s bad.” Drako looked at him. “Why?” Draxen answered instead. “Her ability lets her control gravity around her body.” Kaien smiled. “Now you’ll actually have to work.” Drako’s eyes briefly became gold and crimson. “Good.” Another System notification appeared. [Draconic ability unlock condition: 87%.] [Vampiric ability unlock condition: 81%.] Drako looked toward the arena. A gravity user stood between him and the final thirty-two. More importantly, his next two abilities were close to awakening. Drako smiled. Tomorrow wouldn’t simply be another tournament fight. It would be another chance to push both sides of his bloodline closer to their next stage.
