Registration for the Varon Beast World expedition opened at sunrise, and Drako somehow managed to be standing outside the expedition office before the doors unlocked.

Mira arrived five minutes later and found him leaning against the wall pretending he hadn’t been waiting there. “How long have you been here?” she asked.

“Just arrived.”

Teck walked up behind her and checked his wrist display. “Security records show you entered this hallway forty-seven minutes ago.” Drako slowly looked at him. “Why would you even check that?”

“You lied.” “It was a harmless lie.”

Ruben Veyrox arrived carrying a bag over one shoulder. “He probably couldn’t sleep.” “I slept perfectly.” Fade followed him. “Your heartbeat increased.” Drako stared at the blind swordsman.

“First you steal my tournament, now you’re stealing Blood Sense.” Fade smiled. “You don’t own heartbeats.” Kaien appeared last, yawning. “Why are we awake this early?” Drako pointed toward the expedition doors.

“Beasts. Crystals. Adventure. Possible death.” Kaien nodded. “You should’ve started with possible death.” Mira shook her head. “There’s something wrong with both of you.”

Adrian ran down the hallway carrying three bags. “Wait!” Drako stared at him. “Are you moving there?” Adrian stopped, breathing heavily. “Equipment.” Teck looked at the bags. “Too much equipment.” Adrian frowned. “You literally travel with drones.” “Efficient drones.” “I don’t like having a Green Family friend anymore.” Teck smiled. “You did yesterday.” “That was before six in the morning.”

The expedition instructor finally opened the doors and found seven students waiting. “You’re all going together?” Drako looked around. “Apparently I can’t get rid of them.” Kaien immediately answered,

“Nobody invited you to lead us.” Drako walked inside. “See? He follows me everywhere.” Phoenix flames appeared around Kaien’s fingers. “Keep walking.”

Registration was straightforward. The Varon expedition would last seven days. Students would travel through a controlled interplanetary gateway to one of humanity’s established outposts on Varon, a large wilderness world containing thousands of beast species.

Students weren’t being sent into unexplored territory. Several academies used Varon for training because its safer regions contained beasts appropriate for lower-level fighters, while progressively stronger creatures inhabited restricted zones farther from human settlements.

Each team received emergency teleport markers, communication devices, maps, survival equipment, and strict boundaries. Demon-Tier beasts weren’t anywhere near the student zones. Drako was happy about that. He wanted stronger opponents, not suicide.

The instructor displayed a holographic ranking chart. “Your objective isn’t simply killing beasts. You’ll be evaluated on survival, teamwork, crystal recovery, navigation, and judgment. If you encounter something beyond your classification, retreat.”

Drako nodded seriously. Kaien whispered, “He’s looking directly at you.” “He’s looking at everybody.” “No, definitely you.” The instructor pointed directly at Drako. “Especially you.” Everyone laughed. Drako sighed. “My reputation is becoming unfair.” Mira whispered, “It’s extremely fair.”

The next morning they gathered inside Astra Academy’s gateway chamber. Drako had traveled before, but never through a planetary gateway this large. Two enormous metallic rings stood vertically inside the chamber, covered in Green Family technology and symbols from several engineering organizations.

walked past without reacting. Adrian looked like he’d entered a holy temple. “This is a Green Mark Nine interplanetary gate.” Teck nodded. “Modified Mark Nine.” Adrian touched the railing. “Your family built this?”

“Partially.” “Can you build one?” “Yes.” Adrian stopped walking. “Will you build me one?” Teck looked at him. “Where would you put it?” Adrian thought about that. “My room?” Drako laughed. “Yeah, teleport directly from your bed to breakfast.” Adrian pointed at him. “Exactly!” Teck sighed. “I’m surrounded by visionaries.”

The gateway activated. Blue-white energy filled the center of the rings until the other side became visible. A massive alien forest appeared beyond the portal. Trees hundreds of feet tall stretched toward a pale green sky. Two moons were visible even during daylight. Strange flying creatures moved between distant mountains.

Drako’s smile slowly grew. “Okay. That’s beautiful.” Mira stepped beside him. “Try not to punch anything immediately.” “I can appreciate nature.” A roar echoed through the portal. Drako’s golden eye briefly appeared. “Nature can also fight back.” Kaien smiled. “Now we’re talking.”

They crossed.

Gravity changed first. Varon’s gravity was slightly stronger than Earth’s. Drako immediately felt the difference through his legs. His System responded.

Drako quietly smiled. This world was exactly what he needed.

The human outpost was enormous. Defensive walls surrounded buildings, medical centers, training areas, supply stores, and the gateway complex. Hundreds of students from several academies were arriving.

Different uniforms filled the streets. Some competitors recognized Fade from the tournament and whispered when he passed.

Others recognized Ruben’s crest or Kaien’s Phoenix markings. received even more attention because of the Green Family. Drako watched everyone staring. “Good thing nobody important is here.”

Ruben looked at him. “You’re enjoying being the least famous person in the group?” “Absolutely. I can commit crimes anonymously.” Mira stared at him. “Please don’t say that near security.” Two guards looked over. Drako smiled politely. “Joke.” Kaien walked faster. “I’m pretending I don’t know him.”

Their assigned expedition instructor was Captain Sera, a former beast hunter with a scar crossing her left cheek. She gathered twenty-eight students near the northern gate. “The first zone contains mostly Bronze through Ruby-class beasts. Most travel alone or in small packs.

Do not enter marked restricted regions. Your emergency marker will extract you if your life is threatened, but activating it ends your expedition.”

listened carefully. His System categorized beasts differently in certain details, but the principle was simple. Stronger beasts produced stronger crystals. Captain Sera continued. “You’ll operate in teams of seven.”

Drako slowly looked around.

Seven.

Mira sighed before the names were announced.

“Team Four: Drako, Mira, Fade, Ruben, Kaien, Teck Green, Adrian.”

Drako raised both hands. “The universe loves me.”

Kaien groaned. “Seven days?”

“Seven beautiful days of friendship.”

“I’ll activate my emergency marker now.”

Ruben laughed. “You wouldn’t last twelve hours without us.”

Kaien pointed at him. “You copied my fire.”

“And beat you with it.”

“Seven hundredths.”

Drako immediately joined. “He’s sensitive about the number.”

Kaien’s flames appeared.

Captain Sera shouted, “TEAM FOUR!”

All seven became silent.

“Try leaving the outpost before killing each other.”

Drako nodded. “Professionalism from now on.”

They reached the northern gate.

Drako lasted approximately thirty seconds.

A small six-legged creature walked past outside the wall carrying a fruit in its mouth.

Drako pointed. “What is that?”

Teck scanned it. “Varon burrow runner. Nonaggressive.”

The creature stopped and stared at Drako.

Drako stared back.

It hissed.

Kaien laughed. “Even the wildlife doesn’t like you.”

Drako looked offended. “I was being friendly.”

The creature threw the fruit at him and ran.

Everyone exploded laughing.

Drako wiped juice from his uniform. “I’m hunting that thing first.”

Mira grabbed his arm. “No.”

“It attacked me.”

“It weighs six pounds.”

“Danger comes in many sizes.”

Fade walked past. “You lost.”

Drako stared after him. “Why does everybody keep reminding me of losses?”

They entered the forest.

The joking gradually faded as the enormous trees swallowed them. Sunlight barely reached the ground. Strange calls echoed from every direction.

Teck’s drones moved overhead while Fade walked near the front. Mira checked shadows between the trees. Ruben kept two copied abilities prepared. Kaien maintained a small Phoenix flame in one hand. Adrian’s drones stayed near the rear.

Drako activated Blood Sense.

Hundreds of heartbeats appeared.

His expression changed.

“Stop.”

Everyone froze.

Kaien immediately extinguished his flame.

Drako crouched and touched the ground.

Blood Sense expanded.

One heartbeat.

Two.

Six.

Twelve.

Twenty-three.

Moving quickly.

“Pack coming from the east.”

Ruben prepared stone armor. “How many?”

“Twenty-three.”

Adrian swallowed. “That’s manageable, right?”

Then Drako detected another heartbeat.

Slow.

Heavy.

Each beat felt like something striking a drum inside his skull.

BOOM.

BOOM.

BOOM.

His System appeared.

[High compatibility with Draconic progression.]

Drako smiled.

Mira saw his expression. “Why are you smiling like that?”

“Because apparently breakfast is coming to us.”

Kaien’s flames ignited. “Finally.”

Fade drew his sword.

Ruben activated two abilities.

Teck’s drones spread through the trees.

Adrian prepared his equipment.

Mira disappeared into a shadow.

Then bushes fifty meters ahead exploded outward.

Twenty-three armored wolf-like creatures rushed through the forest.

Behind them, something much larger moved between the trees.

The ground shook with every step.

Drako’s golden scales slowly spread across his arms.

Crimson energy moved beneath them.

Drako cracked his neck.

“Okay, everybody remember the plan.”

Kaien looked at him. “What plan?”

Drako paused.

“Don’t die.”

Kaien laughed. “That’s still your plan?”

“It worked last time.”

The Ironjaw pack roared and charged.

Drako grinned.

Their first beast hunt on another world had officially begun—and this time, there was no tournament shield protecting them.
