My DragonicVampiric System

Episode 34 — The Ironjaw Alpha

The first Ironjaw Ravager crossed fifty meters in seconds. Drako had expected the creatures to resemble ordinary wolves, but up close there was nothing ordinary about them.

Each stood nearly chest-high, with dark armored plates covering its back and shoulders. Their lower jaws were wrapped in natural metallic bone, and their claws tore deep marks into the forest floor as they charged. Twenty-three beasts spread between the trees while the much larger Alpha followed behind them.

Drako expression became serious. This wasn’t an arena. There were no defensive shields and no referee waiting to stop the fight. A mistake here meant real injuries. “Formation,” Ruben ordered. Nobody argued. Fade and Ruben moved forward beside Drako. Mira disappeared into the shadows along their left side. Kaien moved right, Phoenix fire covering his hands.

Drako and Adrian remained behind the frontline while their drones rose between the trees. Teck’s voice came through their communication devices. “Twenty-three smaller targets confirmed. Alpha remains approximately eighty meters behind the pack.”

Drako activated Dragon Blood Vision. Gold and crimson filled his eyes. “Don’t waste energy on their armor. Their necks and lower stomachs have less protection.” Kaien glanced at him. “Useful information for once.” Drako smiled slightly. “You’re welcome.” Then the first beast reached them.

Fade moved first. His sword flashed once, cutting across the exposed section beneath an Ironjaw’s neck. The creature collapsed instantly. Ruben activated stone armor over both arms and caught another beast as it jumped toward him.

He turned with its momentum and slammed it into the ground. Drako stepped toward the third. Dragon Density flowed into his right arm. He avoided the creature’s jaws and punched its ribs beneath the armored plates. CRACK! The beast flew sideways. Two more immediately replaced it.

Drako used Blood Step. Crimson energy flashed around his legs as he disappeared from their path and emerged behind them. Dragon Scales covered his forearm. One beast turned. Too late. Drako’s elbow struck its neck. The second attacked his back, but a blade emerged from the beast’s own shadow. Mira cut its rear leg, forcing it down.

“Left!” she shouted. Drako ducked. Mira’s second blade passed over his head and entered another Ironjaw’s throat. Drako looked at the collapsing beast. “Nice.” “Focus.” “Already am.”

Phoenix flames exploded through the trees. Kaien had intentionally moved away from the others before releasing his fire so he wouldn’t hit them. Three Ironjaws were caught inside the blast. Their armor resisted the first wave, but Kaien increased the temperature until the creatures were forced to retreat.

Ruben appeared beside him using enhanced speed. His stone-covered fist finished one while Kaien attacked another. “Don’t copy my fire,” Kaien warned. Ruben blocked an Ironjaw claw. “We’re doing this again?” “I’m serious.” “I’m currently using stone.”

“Good.” Ruben smiled. “For now.” Kaien’s flames grew brighter. “Ruben.” Drako heard them but didn’t join the argument. Another four beasts were approaching, and his Blood Sense detected movement behind the group. “Adrian! Behind you!”

Adrian spun. An Ironjaw burst from the bushes. His barrier drone activated a fraction too late. The beast crashed through the shield and knocked him backward. Before its jaws could close around his arm, Teck’s drone fired an energy pulse directly into its eye. The beast roared.

Adrian rolled away and activated a small shock device against its exposed stomach. Electricity traveled through the creature. Fade appeared and ended it with one strike. Adrian breathed heavily. “Thanks.” Fade nodded and returned to the front. Teck’s voice came through the communicator.

“Your barrier activation was 0.4 seconds slow.” Adrian stood. “I almost got eaten.” “Which demonstrates why 0.4 seconds matters.” Adrian stared toward Teck. “Can we discuss my failures after the things trying to eat us are dead?” “Reasonable.”

Drako’s Blood Sense suddenly expanded. The Alpha had stopped watching. It was moving.

“Big one incoming.”

The ground shook.

Trees cracked ahead of them as the Alpha charged through its own pack. Smaller Ironjaws jumped aside. Drako finally saw the entire beast. It was nearly three times larger than the others.

Thick black armor covered almost its entire body, and two curved metallic tusks extended from its jaw. Old scars covered its face. One eye was missing.

[Ironjaw Ravager Alpha.]

[Classification: Ruby Beast.]

[Physical Strength: High.]

[Armor Density: High.]

[Draconic compatibility confirmed.]

[Defeat may contribute significantly toward Dragon evolution.]

Drako dismissed the System message. He didn’t need encouragement. “Ruben, Fade, with me. Kaien, keep the smaller ones away. Mira, find an opening. Teck, scan the Alpha.”

Nobody questioned him.

The Alpha lowered its head and charged.

Drako increased Dragon Density through both legs.

“Move!”

Everyone separated.

The Alpha smashed through the space where they had been standing and struck a tree thick enough to support a building. The trunk cracked.

Ruben looked at the damage. “Don’t get hit.”

Drako nodded. “Excellent strategy.”

That was the only joke he had time for.

Fade attacked the Alpha’s side. His sword struck the armor and sparks exploded from the impact. The blade barely left a mark. Ruben used an amplified stone fist against the opposite side.

BOOM!

The Alpha moved half a step before swinging its head. One tusk caught Ruben’s barrier and launched him through the air.

“Ruben!”

“I’m fine!”

Kaien’s Phoenix fire swept behind them, preventing four smaller beasts from joining the Alpha.

Teck’s drones surrounded the massive creature.

“Armor thickness varies,” Teck reported. “Weakest location appears beneath the front legs. Secondary weakness around the damaged eye.”

Drako activated Dragon Blood Vision at maximum focus.

Energy flowed through the Alpha’s body in powerful channels. The largest concentration was inside its chest. Drako could see the weaker armor Teck had identified, but reaching it meant getting beneath a creature strong enough to crush him.

Mira appeared from a shadow beside the Alpha and stabbed near its damaged eye.

The beast reacted instantly.

Its head swung.

Mira disappeared into the shadow just before the tusk reached her.

The Alpha roared and turned toward where she reappeared.

Drako saw the opening.

Blood Flow Control.

His heart accelerated.

Blood rushed through his legs.

Blood Step.

Drako disappeared.

He reappeared beneath the Alpha’s front shoulder.

Dragon Density moved into his fist.

Golden energy surrounded his scales.

Crimson lines spread beneath them.

[Blood Dragon Impact.]

Drako punched upward.

BOOM!

The Alpha’s front leg lifted from the ground.

A crack appeared in the armor.

Drako’s right arm screamed with pain.

[Warning: Muscular damage detected.]

The Alpha immediately attacked.

Drako rolled away as a massive paw destroyed the ground beside him.

“Again,” Drako whispered.

His arm hurt, but the armor had cracked.

Fade understood.

He moved toward the opening.

The Alpha turned to stop him.

Ruben returned at full speed and slammed an amplified shoulder into the beast’s opposite side.

“NOW!”

Fade’s sword changed.

Silver-black energy traveled across the blade.

One precise strike entered the crack Drako had created.

The Alpha screamed.

Its armor separated.

Drako’s Dragon Blood Vision revealed the chest energy core more clearly.

“Kaien!”

Phoenix fire condensed around Kaien’s hands.

Instead of releasing a wide blast, he compressed the flames into a narrow stream.

It struck the exposed section.

The Alpha stumbled backward.

But it didn’t fall.

Its remaining eye became red.

Teck’s scanner sounded.

“Energy increase! Everyone back!”

The Alpha roared.

Every surviving Ironjaw suddenly stopped fighting.

Their eyes turned red too.

Drako counted through Blood Sense.

Fourteen remained.

All fourteen began surrounding the group.

“Pack enhancement,” Teck said. “The Alpha is strengthening them.”

Kaien moved beside Drako. “This just became annoying.”

Drako watched the beasts circle.

“No. The Alpha made a mistake.”

Kaien looked at him.

“How?”

Drako pointed toward the massive creature’s exposed chest.

“It used energy strengthening them instead of protecting itself.”

Ruben smiled.

Fade raised his sword.

Mira emerged beside them.

Teck repositioned his drones.

Adrian activated every remaining combat device.

For the first time since entering Varon, all seven moved without needing instructions.

Kaien released Phoenix fire toward the pack.

Ruben used wind to spread the flames into a defensive circle.

Mira moved through the shadows created by the fire.

Fade cut down the first Ironjaw that crossed the line.

Adrian and Teck’s drones attacked from above.

Drako went directly for the Alpha.

Blood Step.

The beast swung.

Drako ducked beneath the tusk.

His damaged arm wasn’t ready for another Blood Dragon Impact, so he used his left.

Blood Flow Control accelerated.

Dragon Density compressed.

Golden and crimson energy combined.

[Blood Dragon Impact.]

Drako struck the exposed chest.

CRACK!

The Alpha’s armor collapsed.

Fade appeared immediately afterward.

One silver-black slash entered the opening.

The Alpha froze.

Its massive body fell.

The remaining Ironjaws stopped.

Without their Alpha’s enhancement, several fled immediately. The others followed seconds later.

Silence returned to the forest.

Everyone breathed heavily.

Drako looked toward the fallen Alpha.

His System appeared.

[Ironjaw Ravager Alpha defeated.]

[Experience gained.]

[Draconic evolution progress significantly increased.]

[Dragon Density proficiency increased.]

[Blood Dragon Impact proficiency increased.]

[Beast Crystal detected.]

A dark ruby crystal formed inside the Alpha’s damaged chest.

Drako reached toward it.

The moment his fingers touched the crystal, golden energy surged through his body.

His knees hit the ground.

“Drako!” Mira moved toward him.

Drako raised one hand.

“Wait.”

His bones started shifting.

Pain exploded through his shoulders.

Scales spread across his neck and chest.

His spine burned as though something inside him was trying to force its way out.

[Draconic evolution threshold reached.]

[Transformation beginning.]

[WARNING: Evolution significantly more painful than previous transformation.]

Drako clenched his teeth.

He had known this would happen eventually.

Every evolution would change his body.

Every stronger transformation would hurt more.

But this time something was different.

Two hard shapes began pushing outward beneath the skin of his upper back.

Kaien stared.

“Drako…”

Drako’s golden eyes opened.

“What?”

Kaien looked behind him.

“I think you’re growing wings.”
