The kitchen walls moved outward.

"I have never had a kitchen this large to myself," she said.
"Keep producing food and it will become larger."
"Then we need better ingredients."
"I already have Common seeds for potatoes, beans, peppers and several vegetables."
Mira turned toward him.
"You do?"
Carlos showed her the seed inventory and explained how he had bought most of them cheaply from military Lords.
She listened while checking each description.
"If Rowan can grow these, I can make far better meals," she said. "But we should ask him what can be planted together."
"After the raid."
Mira’s smile weakened slightly.
"How long do we have?"
Carlos checked the event panel.
Most buildings formed quickly, but production and recovery did not. The tools took hours to finish, the spear required another hour, and several trades remained unanswered while other Lords prepared for their own raids. Carlos had also lost several hours when his injured body finally forced him to rest.
And even then, he was shocked to see the time on the timer and how many hours had already passed by.

"Just over two hours."
He left the kitchen and went to the Tool Workshop.
His Reinforced Long Spear had been repaired. The workshop had replaced the cracked section of the shaft and tightened both iron strips.
Carlos equipped it.
Then he took out the remaining Random Rare Equipment Chest.
"Open."

Carlos removed the remains of the Reinforced Leather Vest and equipped the coat.
It covered his body from his shoulders to the middle of his thighs. The material felt like thick cloth until he struck it and heard metal beneath the surface.
"Better."
He still had three Lucky Draw Tickets, but he kept them.
Depending on luck before a raid was not preparation.
Carlos gathered everyone near the center of the territory.
Rowan stood with his hoe. Mira carried her three kitchen knives and the Common Shield Carlos had received from SpearHead. Blue floated above the Mana Spring. One waited beside Carlos.
Brann stood apart from them with his hammer over one shoulder.
"The raid can attack from anywhere," Carlos said. "The fields and buildings may be damaged. Residents can be killed."
He pointed toward Rowan.
"You stay close to the Lord’s hut. If enemies reach you, retreat inside. Do not try to fight them with a hoe."
Rowan nodded.
"Blue, stay near Rowan and the spring. Use water to slow anything that enters the fields."
"Bloo."
"Mira, remain between the kitchen and the Lord’s hut. Only fight if something gets past us."
Mira tightened her grip on the shield.
"I understand."
"One stays with me."
Carlos looked at Brann.
"Which side do you want?"
The Bearkin pointed his hammer toward the widest open edge of the territory.
"There."
"Can you hold it alone?"
Brann struck the hammer against his chest.
"Yes."
That was the whole answer.
Carlos walked around the territory with everyone following him.
The expanded land made the weakness of their defense even more obvious. There were no walls, and the buildings were too far apart for one person to protect everything.
Brann could hold the widest side. Carlos and One would defend the opposite end, but that still left the fields, kitchen and Mana Spring exposed.
Blue could slow enemies using water, but Carlos would not place the Sprite in front of creatures whose strength they did not know.
He stopped between the two farm plots.
"We need signals. One shout means enemies are coming from the north. Two means something has entered the fields. Three means everyone retreats to the Lord’s hut."
Mira nodded while Rowan looked across the planted land.
"Do not run through the western rows," Rowan said. "The roots are still shallow. If everyone uses the same path, the wheat there will be crushed before the raid creatures touch it."
Carlos looked at the narrow space Rowan indicated.
"Then that becomes our safe path. Mark it."
Rowan collected several wooden stakes and placed them along the route between the fields and the Lord’s hut. Farming was the only thing he understood, but that was enough to stop everyone from destroying their own crops while retreating.
Carlos moved toward the open northern side next.
He placed two loose boards between wooden posts and stepped back.
Brann struck one with the side of his hammer.
The entire barrier bent. One post came out of the ground and landed several feet away.
"Weak," Brann said.
"It doesn’t need to stop them," Carlos replied. "It only needs to slow them long enough for us to kill them."
Brann looked at the broken post before pushing it back into the ground with one paw.

Carlos did not mistake the increase for trust.
Brann had agreed to fight through one raid before deciding whether the territory was worth protecting. Carlos intended to make sure it was still standing when that decision came.
Carlos spent the final hour placing wooden barriers around the fields. They were not walls, but they would force larger creatures to move through several narrow gaps.
One practiced firing between those gaps.
Blue filled shallow trenches with water.
Mira prepared ten emergency meals that restored stamina and placed them inside Carlos’s inventory.
Rowan moved every tool away from the open fields and checked the young crops.
When the timer reached one minute, everyone took their positions.
