It was late in the evening, and the compound had settled into an uneasy quiet. The guards had changed shifts twice since sundown. The cooks had banked the kitchen fires. The women had gone to their rooms one by one. Even the birds had stopped calling.

Xu Tianlong sat on the edge of his bed, fully clothed, a curved Feng sword resting across his knees. He had not expected to sleep. Not after the names Su Meilin had given him. Not after Ruoxue had started remembering.

The Life Sap bond tightened first.

It started as a low pulse behind his ribs, then pulled hard, sudden and sharp.

Three hostile qi signatures. Close. Already inside the compound.

Xu was on his feet before the first guard hit the ground.

thud.

The sound came from the north wall. Heavy. Final.

Another body followed.

thud.

Then the screaming started.

Xu reached the door as a third guard shouted. The shout became a wet choke.

shlick.

’They’re already past the wall.’

He moved into the corridor. The floor was cold under his bare feet. The Feng blade hung at his side, still sheathed. He didn’t draw it yet. He wanted to see what he was dealing with.

Lin met him at the corner. Frost already crawled down her arms, and her dark amber eyes were bright in the weak lantern light.

"Three," she said. "Two in the courtyard. One broke off toward the infirmary."

"I know." Xu’s voice was low. "Wake the others. Qing’er stays with Ruoxue. You and Feng cover the eastern corridor."

Lin didn’t ask if he was sure. She just looked at him for one hard moment, then turned and vanished into the dark.

Xu kept moving.

The inner courtyard opened before him, silvered by a half-moon. A man stood at its center, lean and still. He wore black leather stitched with silver thread, and two short blades gleamed in his hands. The second assassin crouched low near the west garden, half-hidden behind a dead mulberry tree. A long needle rested between his fingers, its tip dark.

The third was already gone. Xu could feel him moving along the outer wall, fast and silent, closing on the infirmary door.

The first assassin smiled behind his black mask. "Young master Xu. We’ve heard so much about you."

"Most of it exaggerated, I hope," the second said. The needle spun once, whirr.., before settling back into his palm.

Xu stepped into the courtyard. The stone was cold against his feet. The Life Sap pulsed again, marking each hostile qi like green smoke at the edge of his vision.

"Leave now," Xu said. "I won’t ask twice."

The first assassin laughed. "The Black Moon doesn’t leave."

Both men moved at once.

The first came high, both blades flashing. The second circled wide, needle low, trying to flank. Xu drew his sword and met the first attack.

clang.

Steel rang across the courtyard. The impact jarred Xu’s shoulder. The assassin was fast, far faster than any Feng soldier. He reversed his left blade and thrust low. Xu twisted, felt the edge scrape the side of his tunic, and drove an elbow into the man’s jaw.

crack.

The assassin staggered but didn’t fall. He rolled with the blow and came up swinging. The second assassin lunged from Xu’s blind side, needle aimed at his kidney.

Xu stepped back. The needle missed by half an inch. The first assassin’s blade caught him across the forearm.

slash.

Blood spotted the stones. Not deep. The wound burned cold, too cold for plain steel.

’Poison.’

The Regeneration answered. A green heat spread from his core, pushing through his blood to meet the venom. The burn faded to a dull throb.

[Ding!]

[Amplification Protocol Ready]

’Haha!, your poison won’t work on me.’

[Amplification Complete]

[Accelerated Poison Neutralization]

The panel flickered at the edge of his sight.

Xu raised his left hand. Iron Bone Fist flared. His knuckles turned hard as forged iron, the skin tightening over bone.

The second assassin came again. Xu caught the needle between two fingers, twisted, and snapped it.

snap.

The assassin’s eyes went wide. Xu drove his iron-hard fist into the man’s chest.

crunch.

Bone cracked. The assassin flew backward, hit the ground, and rolled. He didn’t get up right away.

The first assassin screamed and came for Xu’s back.

whoosh.

Shadow Step.

Xu dissolved into the nearest shadow. The assassin’s blades passed through empty air. Xu reappeared behind him, sword moving.

shlick.

The blade bit through the assassin’s side. The man dropped one sword, staggered, and fell to one knee. Blood poured from the wound, black in the moonlight.

But he wasn’t done. He raised his remaining blade and spat a low curse.

"Black Moon take you."

Black mist exploded from his body.

fwoosh.

The courtyard vanished. The mist was real, thick and cold, swallowing the lantern light and the moon. Xu couldn’t see. The Life Sap could.

crack.

A blade came out of the mist. Xu caught it with his sword, but the force drove him back two steps. The assassin was on his left. Then his right. The mist itself seemed to move.

’He’s using the dark. Fine.’

Frost Moon Slash.

The silver-blue crescent tore through the black mist.

fwoosh.

The mist shattered. Frost exploded outward, riming the stones and the dead mulberry tree. The first assassin lay frozen on the ground, his remaining blade clutched to his chest. His eyes were wide and still.

’One down.’

The second assassin was already back on his feet. His chest looked wrong, caved inward, but he still moved. He drew a fresh needle from his sleeve, longer and darker than the first.

"Lin!" Xu called.

She was already there.

A spear of ice formed in Lin’s palm. She hurled it with a snap of her wrist.

crackle.

The second assassin threw himself sideways. The ice spear struck the wall, exploded into jagged shards. One shard caught him in the shoulder.

shlick.

He hissed, stumbled, but didn’t stop. His free hand came up. Black powder burst from his palm.

fwoosh.

Xu turned his face. Some of the powder caught his cheek. The burn was instant, but the Regeneration met it, green fire under his skin. The poison couldn’t take hold.

Feng Lianzhu came out of the dark.

She didn’t announce herself. One moment the second assassin was turning toward Xu, the next a short knife was buried in his side.

stab.

The assassin gasped. Feng twisted the blade, her emerald eyes cold.

"Poison," she said. "How does it feel?"

The assassin swung at her. She ducked, pulled a second knife, and slashed his throat.

slash.

He went down without another word.

But the third assassin was already inside the infirmary.

BANG!.

Wood splintered. Qing’er screamed.

Xu ran.

He didn’t feel the wound in his forearm or the cold burn on his cheek. He didn’t hear Lin shouting behind him. He only knew the Life Sap was screaming, and Ruoxue was in danger.

The infirmary door hung off its hinges. Inside, Qing’er stood in front of the cot, a wooden staff raised in her small hands. Ruoxue was behind her, silver hair loose, gray eyes wide but hard.

The third assassin stood in the doorway.

He was bigger than the others. His qi felt wrong. Oily. Cold. It pressed against Xu’s senses like a weight. The dagger in his hand was black and curved, almost liquid.

"Move, girl," he said to Qing’er. "I only need the silver one."

Qing’er didn’t move. Her knuckles were white on the staff.

"Brave," the assassin said. "Stupid, but brave."

He lunged.

Shadow Step

Xu intercepted.

clang.

His sword met the black dagger. The impact tore through his shoulder. This one was stronger. Much stronger. The assassin twisted, broke the lock, and drove a kick into Xu’s ribs.

thud.

Xu skidded back. Pain flared up his side. Something cracked. He kept his feet.

The assassin turned toward Ruoxue.

Shadow Step.

Xu moved through the dark and reappeared between them. His sword came up, but the assassin was already turning, dagger low.

stab.

The blade slipped under Xu’s guard and punched into his side.

shlick.

Hot and cold at the same time. The wound went deep. Blood poured down his hip. The Regeneration answered, but this poison was different. Stronger. It crawled through his meridians, slow and cold.

Ruoxue moved.

She came off the cot in a blur of silver and pale skin. Her body remembered what her mind did not. She caught the assassin’s wrist, twisted it hard.

crack.

The dagger fell.

clatter.

The assassin drove his other hand into her shoulder. Ruoxue took the hit, grunted, and slammed her palm into his throat.

crunch.

The assassin staggered, coughed, but didn’t fall. His pale eyes rolled, then focused. He grabbed Ruoxue by the hair and threw her against the wall.

thud.

Ruoxue hit hard. She slid down.

The assassin turned back to Xu, his hand reaching for another blade. Xu raised his left hand.

Frost Moon Slash.

The silver-blue crescent screamed through the room.

fwoosh.

The assassin threw himself flat. The ice missed his head and slammed into the wall, freezing the wood solid. He came up fast, shoulder smoking with frost, and ran.

crash.

He went through the window. Glass and paper exploded outward. He hit the courtyard, rolled, and vanished into the shadows before Xu could follow.

’Damn it!!, he escaped’

Xu’s legs gave out.

He dropped to one knee, then to both. Blood pooled under him, the room tilted. Ruoxue was suddenly there, her hands pressing against his side.

"No," she whispered. "No, no, no."

Qing’er dropped to her other side. Green light burst from her palms, flooding into Xu’s body.

Life Sap.

He could feel her working, her trait pouring through his meridians, meeting the poison. The Regeneration also answered. For a moment, the cold receded.

Then Lin was in the doorway, frost still crackling around her fists. Feng limped behind her, pale but alive.

[Ding!]

[Combat Amplification Detected]

[Element Synergy Detected: Frost + Shadow + Life]

[Amplification Bonus +75%]

[Qi Condensation Layer 6 Achieved]

The Qi and synergy hit all at once. Frost from Lin. Shadow from Feng. Life from Qing’er. Three traits flowing together through the same bond.

The surge was cold and dark and green. It burned through Xu’s meridians, pushed back the poison, forced the edges of the wound to close just enough to keep him alive.

But not enough to stand.

Ruoxue’s face was the last thing he saw. Her gray eyes were wet. Her mouth moved, but the words came from far away.

"Xu Tianlong...Stay with me," she said. "Please.."
