The first light of dawn touched the paper windows, weak and gray. It fell across Lin Yueyao’s hands as she wrung out a cloth over the basin. The water had gone cold again.

Xu Tianlong lay on the bed, still as death. His breathing was shallow. His face held that pale, drawn look that made something twist behind Lin’s ribs. He had not opened his eyes since the night of the attack.

Lin pressed the cloth to his forehead. His skin was too warm, but the wound on his side was clean. The flesh around it had closed enough to stop the bleeding. The poison had not spread. Qing’er had seen to that.

Qing’er knelt on the floor beside the bed, her small hands resting on Xu’s chest. A soft green light leaked from her palms, pulsing with each breath. Lin could see the tremor in her fingers.

"That’s enough." Lin’s voice cut through the quiet. "You’ll burn yourself out."

Qing’er shook her head. Her round face was smudged with exhaustion. "Just a little more. The poison is still in his lower meridians."

"You’ve done more than enough." Lin set the cloth aside and rose. "Eat. Sleep. I’ll watch him."

Qing’er opened her mouth, but no argument came. She looked at Xu, then at Lin. Her lower lip trembled once before she pressed it flat.

"Yes, Lady Lin." She pushed herself up, stumbled, and caught the edge of the bed. Lin caught her before she fell.

thump.

"Sit." Lin guided her to a stool near the wall. "Feng will bring food."

Qing’er sat, her hands still glowing faintly in her lap. The light faded slowly as her breathing evened.

Feng Lianzhu appeared in the doorway, a bowl of rice porridge in one hand and a cup of water in the other. Her dark red hair was tied back, and her eyes were hard with something that wasn’t anger.

"Still not awake?" she asked.

"No." Lin stepped back to Xu’s side, her fingers resting lightly on his wrist. His pulse was stronger. "But he’s better. The fever broke an hour ago."

Feng set the food down and crossed to the window. "The guard rotation is in place. No more tracks." Her gaze flicked toward the corner of the room.

Ruoxue sat there, on the floor, her knees drawn to her chest. Her silver hair hung over her face like a curtain, and her gray eyes were fixed on Xu. She had not moved since the night of the attack. She just watched him.

Lin had seen that look before. It was the look of a woman drowning in guilt.

"He’ll wake," Lin said again, this time to Ruoxue. "He’s too stubborn not to."

Ruoxue didn’t respond.

The silence stretched. Outside, the compound was waking. Servants moved in the corridors. A guard called the hour. The smell of cooking drifted through the walls.

Feng turned from the window. "I’ll take the door. Call if he stirs."

She left without waiting for a reply.

Qing’er had already fallen asleep on the stool. Lin draped a blanket over her shoulders, then pulled a chair to Xu’s bedside and sat down. Her eyes did not leave his face.

Minutes passed. Then an hour. The light through the window grew brighter, then began to soften.

Ruoxue finally spoke.

"It should’ve been me."

Her voice was cracked, barely above a whisper. Lin turned her head. Ruoxue hadn’t moved, but her hands were clenched in the fabric of her robe.

"What?" Lin asked.

"The knife." Ruoxue’s voice shook. "It should’ve gone into me. Not him. I’m the one they wanted."

Lin’s expression didn’t change. "You’re right."

Ruoxue flinched.

"He stood between you and the blade because you’re under his protection. That’s what he does." Lin’s voice was cold, but not cruel. "If you’d died, his sacrifice would’ve been wasted. So don’t waste it."

Ruoxue lifted her head. Her gray eyes were red-rimmed, but there was something else there now. Something less broken.

"I don’t know how to repay him," she said.

"Then don’t." Lin leaned back. "When he wakes, stand beside him. That’s enough."

Ruoxue stared at her for a long moment. Then, slowly, she uncurled her legs and rose. Her steps were unsteady, but she crossed the room and stopped at the foot of Xu’s bed.

"I can’t fight like you," Ruoxue said. "I can’t heal like Qing’er. But I remember something."

Lin’s eyes narrowed. "What?"

"I remember the black moon," Ruoxue said quietly. "I remember fire, and a gate, and a little girl crying. I remember that they took her." She pressed a hand to her chest. "I don’t remember everything. But I remember enough to know that I have to stop them."

Lin studied her for a long moment, then nodded once.

"Good. That’s a start."

Ruoxue looked down at her hands. They were still shaking, but her voice was steady.

"I won’t let them hurt him again," she said. "I don’t care if I’m a weapon or a person. I’ll protect him."

Lin said nothing.

The door opened. Feng stepped inside, saw Ruoxue standing by the bed, and stopped.

"He moved?" Feng asked.

"No." Ruoxue didn’t look up. "Not yet."

Feng leaned against the doorframe. "You’ve been sitting in that corner for hours. You finally decided to come out."

"I had to." Ruoxue’s voice was quiet but firm. "I can’t keep hiding."

Feng nodded. "The third assassin is still out there. The Pavilion knows where you are. They’ll send more."

Ruoxue clenched her fists. "Then we’ll be ready."

Feng glanced at her. "Can you fight?"

"I don’t know." Ruoxue straightened. "But I’ll try to remember and practice as best I can."

Lin returned with a fresh basin of water. She set it on the table and looked from Ruoxue to Feng. "You two look like you’ve finally stopped snarling at each other."

"Don’t push it," Feng said.

Ruoxue turned to Lin. "I want to help. Let me take the watch."

Lin raised an eyebrow. "You can barely stand."

"I can stand." Ruoxue straightened her back. "I won’t fall."

Lin studied her for a long moment, then nodded once. "Until noon. Then Qing’er takes over."

Ruoxue moved to the chair beside the bed and sat down. She didn’t look away from Xu.

Feng pushed off the doorframe. "I’ll be on the wall."

She left. Lin lingered for a moment, watching Ruoxue.

"You said something to him," Lin said. "When the assassin attacked. You called his name."

Ruoxue’s cheeks colored slightly. "I don’t remember."

"Yes, you do." Lin’s eyes narrowed, not unkindly. "Don’t lie."

Ruoxue looked down. "I told him to stay with me."

"Then make sure he does." Lin turned and walked out, leaving the door open just enough to hear if anything changed.

The room fell quiet again.

Ruoxue sat alone with Xu. The green pulse under his skin grew stronger, then settled. His breathing deepened. One hand, the one she had touched, twitched once.

Ruoxue leaned forward.

"Xu Tianlong?"

His eyelids fluttered.

A soft thump sounded inside the room. His chest rose under a heavier breath.

Then his eyes opened.

Everything was a blur. Light. Shadow. A figure leaning over him. Xu Tianlong blinked once, twice. The world slowly sharpened. Silver hair. Gray eyes.

’Ruoxue..She’s still here.’

His throat was dry as sand. He tried to move, but his body felt like it had been taken apart and put back wrong.

Ruoxue’s eyes widened. "You’re awake."

"Barely." Xu’s voice came out rough, little more than a rasp. He tried to lift his hand, and the motion sent pain through his body. He let it fall back.

"Don’t move." Ruoxue leaned closer, then hesitated, like she wasn’t sure if she should touch him.

Xu didn’t have the strength to argue. He let his head sink into the pillow and focused on breathing. The green pulse under his skin was working, slow and deep. Regeneration. He could feel it, warm and patient.

He turned his head slightly. "How long?"

"Few hours." Ruoxue’s voice shook. "Maybe...I lost count."

’Long enough.’

Then the bond stirred in his chest. A faint pull, like a thread tightening. Recognition. Ruoxue’s gaze was fixed on him, and something in her eyes had changed. Less fear. More resolve.

And then

The blue panel floated in front of Xu. He read it through the fog, then let his eyes close again.

’Good. She’s not running.’

Ruoxue’s hand found his. Her fingers were cold, but they held on. And the corner of his mouth twitched
