"Aaah... I’m dead!"
Groaning in pain with half-open eyes, Himanshu tried to peek into the pitch-black in front of him. The room felt like some terrifying nightmare.
"Mom... Mom, save me!"
Trembling, Himanshu crawled backward on his hands and knees, dragging himself across the floor. He looked like a weak prey standing right in front of the Grim Reaper.
"Shut up, idiot."
Right then, the Demon’s cold, bone-chilling voice echoed from the front. In that blurry, thick darkness, her glowing red eyes and the faint outline of the horns on her head clearly showed her true demonic form.
Panting heavily, Himanshu tried to catch his breath and stuttered,
"Oh... it’s you. Seeing those horns in the dark, I thought some real monster or ghost was coming to eat me."
Wiping the dripping sweat from his forehead, he took deep breaths and somehow managed to stand up using the wall for support.
"You... you’re so scary."
"What, did you expect demons to be beautiful for you?"
Mocking him, the Demon flicked the room lights on.
As the light flooded the room, Himanshu noticed the Demon was wearing his own oversized clothes. With one hand resting on her hip and the other pointing toward the hall door, she ordered in her usual queen-like tone,
"Go on, get out. I’m sleepy."
Gritting his teeth, Himanshu screamed in his mind,
’I’m not going! This is my room. Got it?!’
But those words didn’t dare to leave his lips. He just stood there like a statue.
The Demon’s fierce voice echoed again,
"Are you deaf? Didn’t you hear me, trash?"
Himanshu glared at the Demon like she was his sworn enemy from past lives.
"Why are you looking at me like that? Want me to come over there?"
The Demon took a slight step toward him.
Seeing the Demon move, all of Himanshu’s fake bravery vanished into thin air.
"I’m... I’m going. Ruined my whole sleep."
’I will never become this witch’s husband, Mom!’
Himanshu kept glaring at her until the bedroom door was slammed shut right in his face. ’Next time, I’ll just leave her right there... that too in some thick jungle. Let’s see how much attitude she has when she’s surrounded by wild animals!’
Exhausted and his body aching all over, Himanshu dragged his feet and collapsed straight onto the sofa in the living room.
It was an old sofa, so the moment Himanshu fell on it, the middle part sank completely. And because it was small, he couldn’t even sleep properly; both his legs were hanging off the armrest in the air. On top of that, the winter chill made the sofa fabric ice-cold, adding to his misery.
After lying like that for a few seconds, he suddenly sat up with a jerk, gritting his teeth.
’Dammit... I won’t spare her!’
Imagining the soft sofa pillow as the Demon’s face, Himanshu started taking out all his frustration. He placed the pillow on the couch and started throwing continuous punches at it like a punching bag.
"She took over my room! Wasted all my money, now how am I supposed to buy my new manga? And on top of that... she beat my face to a pulp!"
"Aaah!"
Rubbing his swollen eye, he punched the pillow again out of pain.
"And worse... she won’t even leave me alone in my dreams!"
Grinding his teeth, Himanshu threw one final, full-force punch. Riiip! The old pillow’s seam popped open from the heavy hit, and chunks of cotton flew into the air.
And as he looked through the flying cotton... his breath hitched in his throat.
The Demon was standing right in front of him. She had a water bottle in one hand, and her cold eyes were staring dead at Himanshu.
"You... you didn’t sleep?" Himanshu’s voice sounded like a scared little mouse.
Without a single drop of emotion in her eyes, the Demon slowly placed the water bottle on the glass table.
"Yeah... yeah. Let me just finish one thing. Then I’ll sleep peacefully."
The very next second, the Demon slammed her foot on the edge of the sofa, leaned in, and grabbed his collar in a flash.
"What were you saying? You won’t spare me? Go on, speak... what were you saying?"
"I... I... I..." Himanshu started sweating bullets.
"What happened? Cat got your tongue? Speak up... speak!"
For a moment, a terrifying silence fell over the hall. Poor Himanshu had no idea what to say to defend himself. He didn’t even realize how fast his heart was racing or how heavy his breathing was. All he could see were the Demon’s glowing red eyes right in front of his face.
Suddenly, a forced cough echoed in the hall.
"Ahem... ahem!"
For a split second, the Demon’s fist froze on his collar. She turned into a stone statue. ’Does this woman have some hidden power? Or are the rules of the human world just like this?’ The Demon looked at Mom with confusion and a weird sense of nervousness. Himanshu could clearly see the Demon’s eyes widen in shock. He couldn’t understand why the Demon, who was just about to murder him, got so rattled and nervous just from a simple cough and a glimpse of his mom!
Anyway, Himanshu didn’t care about that at all. He was just happy to be alive.
Seeing Mom standing there, the Demon let go of Himanshu’s collar so fast like it was burning her hand. She thought Mom had figured out she was beating him up.
"Sorry to disturb you two. I’ll be mindful from now on."
Saying this, Mom looked away and slowly walked toward the kitchen with a soft smile on her face. (Mom totally thought they were having some romantic moment in the dark hall).
For a second, the Demon couldn’t process anything. She just stood there dumbfounded, watching Mom walk away.
But Himanshu’s brain worked at lightspeed. Two things became crystal clear to him. First: Mom totally mistook this brutal beating for a romantic scene. And second: If he wanted to save his life, he needed to stick to Mom as much as possible!
Coming out of the kitchen with a water bottle in her hand, Mom walked back toward her room. The Demon was still standing there, staring at Mom, lost in thought.
And then the Demon’s eyes snapped back to the sofa. Himanshu was gone! The Demon turned around—she didn’t even catch the wind of when Himanshu slipped away. He had teleported right behind Mom in the blink of an eye.
"Mom... I’ll sleep in your room tonight."
"What? But why?" Mom asked in surprise.
"Well... I’m not feeling well. I think I’m catching a fever." Himanshu said, putting a hand on his forehead, acting all pitiful. "There’s only one bed in my room. I don’t want her to get sick too."
"Couldn’t you tell me earlier? Since when do you have a fever?"
Mom immediately got worried and placed her hand on his forehead.
Thanks to his fear of death, Himanshu’s body was already burning up like an oven.
"Did you take medicine?" Mom asked.
"Yeah, yeah, I took it."
"Alright. Just sleep in my room today." Mom opened her bedroom door.
All the peace in the world and a victorious smile washed over Himanshu’s face.
Right then, the Demon’s cold and annoyed voice came from behind,
"Auntie, won’t you catch his fever if he sleeps there?"
Mom turned around and gave a very sweet smile.
"No. I have two beds in my room. Whenever Buddy needed me, we would just sleep in the same room."
Saying that, Mom walked inside.
Just before going in, Himanshu turned around and looked at the Demon. He stuck his tongue out, pulled his eyes down with his fingers, and proudly walked into Mom’s room, mocking the terrifying Demon. Left outside, the Demon could only grind her teeth in pure anger.
