The moment Victor Reyes ended the call with Matthew St. Claire, he grabbed his car keys.

"Let’s go."

Sarah Clifford immediately stood.

"Where?"

Victor held up Harry Finn’s student records.

"Sterling Village."

"If Harry left anything behind..."

"...it’ll be there."

Three hours later...

The black SUV entered the quiet countryside. Nothing had changed.

Rice fields still stretched across the horizon. Children still rode bicycles along the narrow roads. The old chapel still stood proudly at the center of the village.

Only this time, Victor wasn’t there to investigate Chris and Liliana’s love story.

He was hunting a ghost.

Sarah looked at the faded address written on Harry’s school records.

"It should be somewhere here."

Victor slowed the vehicle.

"There."

A small wooden house stood at the end of the street. It looked forgotten. The white paint had peeled away years ago. Several windows were broken. Tall weeds covered most of the front yard. The mailbox leaned sideways.

No vehicle. No lights. No signs of life.

Sarah frowned. "It looks abandoned."

Victor quietly observed the surroundings. "Let’s make sure."

As they approached the gate, an elderly man carrying a basket of vegetables slowly walked past them.

Victor smiled politely. "Good afternoon, sir."

The old man stopped. "Good afternoon."

Victor pointed toward the house. "Did a family named Finn used to live here?"

The old man’s expression immediately softened.

"The Finn family..."

He looked toward the old house.

"Yes. They lived there many years ago."

Victor exchanged a glance with Sarah.

"What happened to them?"

The old man sighed. "Poor people. The father worked as an accountant. The mother was a teacher at Aurelia Academy. They were good people."

Sarah quietly asked,

"Where are they now?"

The old man lowered his eyes. "They both died."

Victor frowned. "Died?"

He nodded slowly. "About twenty years ago."

Silence.

Victor felt a chill.

Twenty years.

Exactly, twenty years?

Sarah quietly asked,

"What about their son?"

"Harry?"

The old man nodded.

"He became an orphan. He disappeared not long after. No one really knew where he went."

Victor remained silent. His thoughts immediately returned to another tragedy.

Twenty years ago.

Edward Sterling and Vanessa Sterling died in an accident. Then Sterling Corporation collapsed. And Liliana became an orphan.

Now, Harry Finn’s parents had also died during the exact same year.

.....

After thanking the old man, Victor carefully pushed open the rusted gate. It creaked loudly.

The front door wasn’t locked. It slowly opened with a gentle push.

Dust filled the air.

The furniture remained exactly where it had been left years ago.

In the living room was a worn-out sofa and a cracked table in the dining room. Family photographs were still hanging on the walls.

Sarah quietly walked through the living room.

"No one’s lived here in years."

Victor nodded. "It certainly looks like it."

Then, he stopped.

Footprints. Very faint but fresh enough not to belong to twenty years ago.

He slowly looked toward the hallway.

"Someone’s been here."

.....

The two investigators carefully searched each room.

The kitchen was covered in dust. The parents’ bedroom looked untouched. Old clothes remained inside the closet.

Nothing valuable. Nothing recent.

Then, Victor reached the final room.

The bedroom door opened smoothly.

Unlike the others.

Sarah immediately noticed.

"...Victor."

The room looked completely different. The floor had recently been cleaned. The bed had fresh sheets. Books were neatly arranged. A laptop charger rested beside the desk. And several bottled waters stood beside the bed.

It was obvious. Someone had been living there recently.

Victor slowly whispered,

"Harry."

.....

The room reflected a strangely disciplined person.

Everything had a place. Clothes folded perfectly. Shoes arranged neatly.

On the study table, there were photography magazines, language books and maps of Europe. Several cameras were inside the cabinet.

But there were no family photographs, no decorations. Nothing personal.

Almost.

Sarah opened the desk drawer.

"Nothing."

Victor checked the wardrobe. Nothing.

Then, he noticed a black wooden box beneath the bed.

It was locked.

Sarah handed him a small pry tool. Within seconds, the lock snapped. Victor slowly lifted the lid.

Inside, only one notebook rested neatly in the center. A worn leather diary.

On the first page, neatly written.

Harry Finn

Neither investigator spoke.

Victor carefully turned the page.

.....

March 18

Today Lily smiled. Not because of me. Because Chris shared his crayons with her. I wish she smiled at me that way.

Sarah quietly looked up. "Lily..."

Victor nodded. "He already called her Lily."

Another page.

September 2

Chris walked her home again. I wanted to. Maybe tomorrow.

Victor continued reading.

October 11

She cried today. Her parents died. Mine too.

Now, we’re the same. No one understands us. She just doesn’t know it yet.

Sarah slowly sat down. "Oh my God..."

Victor continued.

November 5

Grandma Lucia hugged Lily today..I wish someone hugged me too.

Maybe, if she knew how lonely I am, she would stay with me forever.

Victor quietly closed his eyes.."It started here."

More pages.

Harry described watching Liliana study, watching her clean classrooms after school. Watching her volunteer at village events. Watching Chris constantly appear beside her.

Every memory. Every detail. He recorded it for years.

.....

Sarah suddenly stopped at another page.

"Victor..."

He looked over.

Harry had written:

Chris always wins.

Music competitions and sports. Her attention. Her smile. Her laughter.

Everything that should have been mine.

Victor’s jaw tightened.."This isn’t just jealousy."

Sarah nodded. "It’s fixation."

Another page revealed something even more important.

Harry wrote about his father.

Father worked at Sterling Corporation. He said the company wasn’t failing because of money. He said someone wanted it destroyed.

Victor immediately looked at Sarah.

"Read that again."

She did.

Harry had continued.

Father came home scared that night. He said he found something in the accounting books.

The next morning, Mother and Father never came home.

Silence.

Neither investigator moved.

Victor slowly looked toward Sarah.

"Twenty years ago."

She nodded.

"Edward and Vanessa died. So did Harry’s parents."

Victor carefully turned another page.

The final sentence on it made both investigators freeze.

They stole everything from me.

My parents. My future..Even Lily.

One day, I’ll take her back.

The room fell silent.

Outside, the wind gently rattled the old windows of the abandoned house.

Victor slowly closed the diary. He finally understood.

Carl De Vera had never simply been an obsessed fan.

Harry Finn believed fate had made him and Liliana the same. Two children left without parents. He convinced himself they belonged together.

Then Chris entered every Chapter of Liliana’s life.

Harry was jealous until it slowly transformed into obsession.

Sarah quietly looked toward Victor.

"This isn’t over."

Victor nodded grimly.

"No."

Looking at the diary resting in his hands, he added,

"I have a feeling..."

"...this is only the beginning of the truth."
