The penthouse was unusually quiet. For once, nobody was arguing. Nobody was running through the hallways. Nobody was teasing Chris.
Well, not at the moment.
Chris sat inside his bedroom with a guitar resting on his lap. Several sheets of paper were scattered across the desk. Some contained lyrics. Others contained crossed-out ideas. A half-finished melody played softly from his phone.
He frowned.
Then erased another line.
A knock interrupted him.
"Come in."
The door opened.
Liliana stepped inside fresh from training. Her hair tied loosely behind her head. Her expression immediately softened when she saw him.
"Working?"
Chris nodded. "Trying."
Liliana walked closer. Then she noticed the guitar.
Her eyes brightened. "You’re writing a song?"
"Maybe."
"Can I hear it?"
Chris smiled. "It’s unfinished."
"I don’t mind."
Liliana sat beside him on the sofa.
Close enough that Chris could smell her shampoo.
But also far enough that he could still think. Mostly.
Chris adjusted the guitar. Then began playing.
A gentle melody filled the room. Warm. Nostalgic. Comfortable.
Then he sang.
🎶
Oh-oh-oh-oh
Yeah, yeah
Remember that summer?
Eighteen summers, riverside skies,
Sunlight dancing in your emerald eyes.
Little white house by the water’s edge,
Two dreamers sitting on an old wood bench.
Your brown pigtails blowing in the breeze,
Laughing while you climbed the maple trees.
You talked about movies, city lights,
Your name in silver on the theater signs.
And I said,
"I’ll sing my songs around the world someday."
You smiled and said,
"Then I’ll be cheering all the way."
The river kept flowing,
The daylight fading.
We were young enough
To believe in anything.
🎶
The room fell quiet.
Chris stopped playing.
Then scratched the back of his neck.
"I’m still writing the rest."
Liliana stared at him, blushing. Smiling.
"What?"
Chris asked.
"It’s about that summer, right? When we went camping?" She asked.
Chris nodded. "Yeah. I just thought it was a good memory. We were sitting like this."
Liliana chuckled. "I turned eighteen and you asked me what I wanted. I told you I wanted some fresh air so you brought me there."
"That was the best summer for me."
"It was. Uncle Matthew and Aunt Amanda finally agreed that we go out alone."
Chris laughed. "Mom kept on reminding me to—" He suddenly felt embarrassed.
"We’re teenagers. We’re not yet married. She’s worried."
They laughed remembering their conversation with Amanda St. Claire.
"Anyway, I liked the song. I hope to hear the whole version."
"Really?"
She nodded. "It feels happy."
Chris laughed. "It was a happy summer."
Then, they both remembered again.
The riverside house, the bonfire, the long conversations ,the dreams they shared and the future they imagined.
Back when everything seemed simpler.
Liliana leaned against the sofa.
"Is writing music difficult?"
Chris thought about it.
Then nodded. "Sometimes."
"Why?"
"Because you have to turn feelings into words."
Liliana blinked. "That sounds hard."
"It is."
Chris looked down at the unfinished lyrics.
"Sometimes I know exactly what I feel." A pause. "But finding the right words is harder."
Liliana nodded. She understood that.
Because there were feelings she carried for years without knowing how to express them.
The conversation flowed naturally after that.
They talked about music, training, their schedules, the new campaigns and the rumors online.
The comfortable kind of conversation that never felt forced.
Eventually silence settled between them.
Not awkward. Just peaceful.
Chris placed the guitar aside. Then looked toward her.
Liliana knew he was thinking too much.
"What?"
Chris hesitated. Then surprised himself by asking.
"Can I ask you something?"
"Of course."
Another pause. Longer this time.
Then—
"Do you want to do it?"
"I mean, what do you think of us sleeping together?"
Liliana froze. "...What?"
Chris immediately regretted asking. But it was too late.
"I mean—like—us."
The room became very quiet.
Liliana stared at him. Then slowly understood what he meant.
"You mean...that! The one normal husbands and wives do."
Chris slowly nodded.
Liliana’s eyes widened. But he knew exactly what he felt. Chris was a man and they’ve been married for five years.
Their relationship moved carefully and patiently.
A relationship built on friendship first.
Chris looked away, suddenly embarrassed.
"I was just wondering."
Liliana blinked a few times.
Then her expression softened. "You mean... now?"
Chris nodded awkwardly.
Liliana’s heart pounded. She couldn’t believe he just asked her about it.
The answer didn’t come immediately this time.
Liliana looked down at her hands, thinking. Then she smiled faintly.
"Well, I was never against it. I was...waiting."
Chris was surprised.
Liliana’s face turned red. "I can’t believe I said that."
Chris was amused.
Then Liliana spoke again. "I think..." She glanced at him. "...it’s something we should both want."
Chris listened quietly.
Liliana continued. "It was the truth. I waited. Maybe for the right time because we’ve always taken things slowly."
A small smile appeared. "And I never felt like we were missing anything."
Another pause. "But..." She looked at him again. "If it’s something you’re thinking about..." Her voice softened. "...then I’m honestly not against it."
Chris blinked.
His brain was clearly trying to process everything at once.
Liliana felt her cheeks warm. She wasn’t sure if she actually answered his question.
Then he laughed softly.
"Oh no."
"What?"
"I broke you again."
"I am perfectly fine."
"You look shocked."
"Because you suddenly asked and that makes it more awkward. If you want to do it, you don’t have to ask—"
She immediately covered her mouth when she realized what she just said. Even Chris stopped laughing, his face suddenly became serious.
"So, if I carry you on the bed, you wouldn’t complain?" He asked while staring at her.
Liliana bit her lip and slowly shook her head.
Chris leaned closer to her. Slowly. Liliana didn’t move, but she immediately closed her eyes.
Chris carried her gently on the bed. She slowly opened her eyes.
Silence. They were just staring at each other for a few seconds.
Then Chris gently kissed her on the forehead. "You should rest. I think I still have some self-control left in me."
The room filled with laughter.
Eventually Chris smiled.
Then he walked back to the sofa when Liliana fell asleep.
Outside the bedroom, footsteps approached.
River’s voice whispered. "Do you think they’re talking about romance?"
Leo answered. "Definitely."
Aaron sighed. "Why are we here?"
"Research." River replied.
The bedroom door suddenly opened. All three immediately scattered.
Chris stared at the empty hallway. Then slowly closed the door.
Some things, apparently, would never change.
