Within a week, Carl De Vera had become one of the most talked-about trainees inside St. Claire Entertainment.
It wasn’t because of extraordinary talent, an impressive portfolio, or even his good looks. People talked about him for one reason and one reason only—he looked, and acted, far too much like Chris St. Claire.
At first, everyone dismissed it as coincidence. Blond hair wasn’t exactly rare, tall men weren’t uncommon in the modeling industry, and blue contact lenses had become fashionable among aspiring models. Even wearing similar clothes could easily be explained as admiration. But as the days passed, coincidence slowly transformed into something much stranger.
Carl wasn’t simply inspired by Chris.
He copied him.
Almost every detail.
The way Chris casually tucked one hand into his pocket while walking. The slight nod he gave employees when greeting them. The habit of rolling up his sleeves before practice. Even the smile. It wasn’t identical, but it was close enough to leave people feeling strangely uncomfortable.
Before long, whispers spread throughout the company.
"Did you notice?"
"He even walks like Chris."
"I thought I was imagining it."
"No, you’re not."
"It’s honestly creepy."
Eventually, someone gave him a nickname.
The Copycat.
Surprisingly, Carl never reacted. He neither denied the comparisons nor took offense whenever someone jokingly called him "Mini Chris" or "Copycat." He simply smiled politely and continued training as though he hadn’t heard a thing.
Somehow...
That calm reaction unsettled everyone even more.
Liliana noticed it too. At first, she convinced herself she was simply overthinking. Chris was one of the biggest idols in the world, and countless trainees admired him. Copying someone successful wasn’t unusual.
But little by little...
Things stopped feeling normal.
One afternoon after modeling practice, Carl approached her carrying two bottled drinks.
"Training was difficult today."
Liliana smiled politely.
"It was."
He handed one bottle to her.
"This is your favorite, right?"
Liliana blinked.
"My... favorite?"
Carl nodded confidently.
"You always drink this after training."
She accepted the bottle, but a faint feeling of unease settled in her chest.
She had never told Carl what her favorite drink was.
So...
How did he know?
Before she could ask, another trainee called Carl’s name, interrupting the conversation. He excused himself with a polite smile and walked away, leaving Liliana staring quietly at the bottle in her hand.
Something wasn’t right.
She just couldn’t explain why.
Over the next several days, the strange coincidences continued to pile up. Whenever Chris wasn’t around, Carl somehow appeared instead. If Liliana practiced poses in one studio, Carl happened to be training nearby. If she visited the cafeteria, he arrived shortly afterward. If she finished work early, Carl somehow left at almost the exact same time.
None of those moments were inappropriate on their own.
Together...
They formed a pattern.
One Liliana could no longer ignore.
The incident that finally convinced her happened later that week.
Nicolo had just returned from a Chanel photoshoot, still dressed in designer clothes and carrying several garment bags over one shoulder while checking messages on his phone. Ahead of him stood a familiar blond figure with broad shoulders and one hand casually tucked into his pocket.
Without looking carefully, Nicolo smiled.
"Chris!"
The blond man turned around.
Nicolo froze.
"...Oh."
It wasn’t Chris.
It was Carl.
Carl offered an understanding smile.
"I get that a lot."
Nicolo stared for several awkward seconds before forcing out a laugh.
"Sorry."
"No problem."
Carl walked away as though nothing had happened, leaving Nicolo standing in the middle of the hallway wearing a deeply confused expression.
A few minutes later, he found Liliana reviewing the following day’s schedule.
"Lily."
She looked up and smiled.
"You’re back."
Nicolo lowered his voice.
"I just greeted Carl."
Liliana looked surprised.
"You mistook him for Chris?"
He nodded slowly.
"From behind..."
His brows furrowed.
"...they’re almost identical."
Liliana sighed quietly.
"I know."
Nicolo studied her expression.
"Doesn’t that bother you?"
She hesitated.
"...A little."
She didn’t tell him everything.
She didn’t mention that Carl somehow knew her favorite drink.
Or that he always seemed to appear wherever she happened to be.
Or that he had begun speaking to her with an unusual familiarity.
Almost...
As though they had known each other for years.
Almost...
As though he wanted people to mistake him for Chris.
That evening, Chris arrived to pick her up as usual. The drive back to the St. Claire Mansion was noticeably quieter than normal, and it didn’t take long for him to notice.
"You’ve been thinking about something."
Liliana continued looking out the window.
"...Can I ask you something?"
"Anything."
She hesitated before speaking.
"What do you think about Carl?"
Chris’s hands tightened almost imperceptibly around the steering wheel.
"I don’t know him."
"I mean..."
She searched for the right words.
"...he feels strange."
Chris briefly glanced at her.
"What happened?"
Liliana told him everything—the copied gestures, the matching clothes, the blue contact lenses, the favorite drink Carl somehow knew, and the strange way he always seemed to appear wherever she was. Finally, she mentioned how even Nicolo had mistaken Carl for Chris from behind.
When she finished...
Silence filled the car.
Chris’s expression gradually hardened.
He wasn’t angry.
He was thinking.
Very carefully.
Very seriously.
"He knew your favorite drink?"
Liliana nodded.
"I never told him."
Chris frowned.
"He shouldn’t know that."
"No."
"He also keeps approaching you?"
"Yes."
The silence stretched even longer.
"What are you thinking?" Liliana finally asked.
Instead of answering immediately, Chris replayed every interaction he’d had with Carl—the copied hairstyle, the clothes, the contact lenses, the forced resemblance, and now... this.
Suddenly...
Everything felt wrong.
Very wrong.
"I don’t think he’s copying me because he admires me."
Liliana slowly turned toward him.
"You think there’s another reason?"
"I don’t know."
His voice was quieter now.
"But I don’t like it."
Neither did she.
When they arrived at the mansion, Chris didn’t get out of the car. Instead, he reached for his phone and immediately called Robin.
Robin answered almost instantly.
"Chris?"
"I need a favor."
"What happened?"
"I want everything."
Robin frowned.
"...Everything?"
"Everything about Carl De Vera."
Chris’s voice remained calm, but every word carried unmistakable seriousness.
"His education. Previous agencies. Former employers. Social media accounts. Family. Friends. Who introduced him to the company. Who recommended him."
He paused.
"I want every single detail."
Robin remained silent for several seconds before asking the obvious question.
"Is he dangerous?"
Chris looked at Liliana before quietly answering.
"I don’t know."
A brief silence followed.
"But until I know..."
He looked toward the mansion gates.
"...I’m treating him like he is."
Robin didn’t ask another question.
"I’ll start immediately."
The call ended.
Chris slipped his phone back into his pocket, and before he could say anything else, Liliana quietly reached over and intertwined her fingers with his.
"I might just be overthinking."
Chris shook his head immediately.
"No."
His answer came far too quickly.
Far too firmly.
"If something makes you uncomfortable..."
He gently squeezed her hand.
"...then it’s already important."
Liliana smiled softly.
One of the reasons she had fallen in love with Chris—long before she ever found the courage to admit it, even to herself—was because he never dismissed her feelings.
Not once.
As they walked through the mansion gates, neither of them noticed the black sedan parked across the street.
Inside, someone quietly watched the gates close.
A camera rested on the passenger seat.
Several photographs were scattered beside it.
Most were pictures of Liliana.
Some were of Chris.
One showed Carl De Vera entering St. Claire Entertainment.
A gloved hand slowly picked up that photograph.
Then...
Its owner smiled.
Almost as if...
Everything was unfolding exactly according to plan.
