The breakfast table, which had been filled with laughter only minutes earlier, fell into an uncomfortable silence.
The aroma of freshly baked croissants and brewed coffee lingered through the private dining room, but no one seemed interested in the luxurious meal anymore. Every phone on the table displayed the same headlines, the same photographs, and the same speculation spreading across the internet.
Nathan sighed as he scrolled through another article.
"They’re making it sound like both of you went on dates."
Rose frowned.
"They even cropped out the presidential security."
Nicole shook her head.
"That’s intentional."
Emily quietly set her coffee cup down.
"They’re creating a story."
"It’s what the media does."
Nathan opened another article and frowned even more.
"This one says Chris secretly spent the night with Ruby Grey."
Before he could continue—
"Enough."
Liliana’s voice cut through the room.
It wasn’t loud.
Yet everyone immediately fell silent.
She slowly lowered her spoon onto the table before lifting her eyes toward her cousins.
"Can we stop talking about it?"
Her tone remained calm.
Too calm.
Emily froze.
Nathan slowly closed his phone.
No one said another word.
Liliana quietly continued eating her breakfast. Every movement remained graceful. Every expression remained composed. Only her eyes betrayed her.
For the first time, they burned with unmistakable anger.
Emily had known Liliana almost her entire life. She had seen her cry. She had seen her laugh. She had seen her heartbroken. She had even seen her face Carl De Vera without losing her composure.
But she had never... Ever... Seen Liliana angry. Not like this.
The silence became almost unbearable.
Liliana looked down at her untouched coffee. Her thoughts refused to settle.
Why am I angry?
She already knew the answer.
She simply didn’t want to admit it.
Chris had every right to attend business meetings. He had every right to accept fashion campaigns. And had every right to meet Ruby Grey.
None of those things were wrong. She knew that. She truly did.
Yet...
Why hadn’t he come back?
Why hadn’t he told her personally?
Why had the photographs looked so...
Natural?
Liliana closed her eyes briefly.
Stop it. It has nothing to do with you. She repeated the words inside her mind.
Their marriage had never been born from love. It had been arranged years ago because of promises made by their families.
Chris hadn’t chosen her.
He had accepted the marriage because it was his responsibility. Because Matthew had asked him to.
Because the St. Claire family had taken care of her after her parents died.
She slowly tightened her grip around her coffee cup.
If one day, Chris meets someone he truly loves, wouldn’t that be normal?
Her chest suddenly tightened.
Ruby Grey was beautiful, successful, elegant and confident. She belonged to Chris’s world.
Unlike herself. She was just a housewife for five years and just started her career.
Liliana lowered her gaze. She couldn’t blame Ruby.
Ruby didn’t know Chris was married. She had done nothing wrong.
The only person she found herself becoming upset with was Chris. And that realization frightened her more than anything.
Across Paris, another convoy quietly arrived at the hotel.
Chris stepped out first. He looked unusually restless.
Leo immediately noticed.
"You’ve checked your phone at least thirty times."
Chris sighed.
"I know."
Aaron looked up from his tablet.
"You’re worried."
Chris didn’t deny it.
He adjusted the collar of his jacket before looking toward the hotel entrance.
"Do you think Lily’s angry?"
Leo exchanged a glance with Aaron.
Aaron answered honestly.
"If I were you, I’d be more worried about the scandal."
Chris frowned.
"What scandal?"
Aaron held up his phone.
"The entire internet thinks you spent the night at a hotel with Ruby Grey."
Chris looked at the article and sighed.
"I didn’t."
"I know."
Aaron shrugged.
"But the public doesn’t."
Leo folded his arms.
"Still, I don’t think that’s what’s bothering you."
Chris remained quiet.
Leo smiled knowingly.
"You’re wondering whether Liliana believes it."
Chris slowly nodded.
"I texted her."
"But she never replied."
Aaron patted his shoulder.
"Then go talk to her."
Chris smiled weakly.
"I plan to."
Back inside the hotel, breakfast had already ended.
Most of the group left to prepare for rehearsals and meetings.
Emily quietly followed Liliana into her suite.
The moment the door closed...
Neither of them spoke.
Liliana walked toward the large window overlooking the Paris skyline.
Morning sunlight illuminated the city, but she barely noticed.
Emily slowly approached.
"Lily."
No response.
Emily gently rested a hand on her shoulder.
"You know Chris."
"I do."
"He would never—"
"I know."
Liliana answered so quickly that Emily stopped speaking.
"I know he wouldn’t betray me."
Her voice trembled ever so slightly.
"I know those pictures don’t show everything."
Emily looked at her quietly.
"I trust him."
Liliana whispered the words as though trying to convince herself.
"I really do."
She laughed softly.
A painful laugh.
"But why..."
"...does it hurt so much?"
Emily’s heart ached.
Liliana finally turned around.
Her green eyes had already become red.
"I kept telling myself that I had no right to feel jealous. Our marriage wasn’t built on love. He married me because of his family. He protected me because he was kind."l He stayed beside me because he felt responsible."
Her voice broke.
"So why am I angry?"
Emily stepped forward and wrapped her cousin in a tight embrace.
The moment she did, Liliana completely fell apart. Tears streamed silently down her cheeks. She buried her face against Emily’s shoulder, desperately trying to stop crying.
"I hate this..."
She whispered between sobs.
"I hate feeling this way."
Emily gently stroked her hair.
"You love him."
Liliana cried even harder.
"I know. I know... And that’s what makes it hurt."
Emily closed her own eyes.
Five years of pretending and hiding. Five years of loving each other without saying the words that mattered most.
Now, one misunderstanding had managed to shake everything they had carefully built.
Outside the suite...
Chris quietly stood before Liliana’s door.
His hand was raised. He was about to knock.
Then, he heard it.
Soft crying.
Chris froze. His heart sank.
He never heard Liliana cry during the past five years.
He slowly lowered his hand.
Behind the door, Emily was comforting the woman he loved.
Outside, Chris remained standing in complete silence. He didn’t know whether knocking on that door would make everything better or destroy the fragile trust they had spent five years protecting.
