Lucian kept walking because stopping had never been an option.
The grey pressed in from all sides, thick and heavy like fog that had forgotten how to lift. It tried to slow him, to wrap around his legs and fill his lungs, but he moved through it the same way he had moved through every other obstacle since the day he woke up in this second chance. One foot in front of the other. No fanfare. No grand declarations. Just the quiet certainty that the people he loved were somewhere ahead, and he was going to reach them.
The dimension fought back in small, vicious ways. Shadows flickered at the edges of his vision, trying to show him things he had tried to forget. Lucy burning. The betrayal that ended his first life. The long, empty years after. He saw them, acknowledged them, and kept walking. The memories frayed and dissolved behind him like smoke.
He thought about the garden. The bench where he had sat for months chasing ghosts. The way Althea still watched everyone with careful eyes, learning what family meant after being pulled back from a timeline that should have erased her. The way Marc carried the scars of Project X like armor he couldn’t quite take off. The way Lucy smiled now, tired but real, when she thought no one was looking.
He thought about Evelyn most of all.
Not the grand, heroic version. Just the small things. The way she used to hum when she was concentrating. The quiet laugh she saved only for him. The promise they had made to each other in the old days, before everything went to hell.
The grey tried to show him her face fading. He pushed the image aside and kept walking.
The dimension shifted around him, trying new tricks. The ground beneath his feet became soft, pulling at his boots like quicksand. He stepped through it. Walls of liquid forgetting rose up, trying to swallow him whole. He walked through them too, the substance dissolving into harmless mist where it touched him. The air thickened until breathing felt like drowning. He breathed anyway.
He didn’t destroy everything in his path. That wasn’t the point. He simply refused to be stopped.
Somewhere ahead, he could feel them. The kids. Evelyn. The chains trying to hold them. The pull was steady now, like a compass pointing true north. He followed it without hurry. There was no need to rush. Rushing had never gotten him anywhere good.
The grey began to crack in places. Thin lines of gold light showed through, faint but real. The dimension was fighting harder, throwing more of itself at him. Constructs of void and crystal rose up in waves, faceless and relentless. He dismantled them with quiet efficiency. A twist of space here. A pulse of raw power there. Nothing flashy. Just enough.
He thought about the Warden’s words back at the doors. The way she had spoken of balance like it was the only truth that mattered. He understood the impulse. Once, he had been willing to burn everything for balance too. But then he had watched Lucy die. Then he had come back. Then he had chosen family over everything else, over and over again.
The grey screamed around him as another section fractured.
He kept walking.
In the chamber of chains, the air felt thinner.
Finn sat with his back against one of the pulsing links, pressing a makeshift bandage to his side. The bleeding had slowed, but the drain was constant now, a low hum that made his head ache. Mira leaned against him, eyes half-closed, staff resting across her lap. Dorian paced a small circle, favoring his burned arm, muttering curses under his breath.
Evelyn floated at the center, chained from every direction. Her silver hair hung limp. Her violet eyes were open but distant, watching something only she could see.
She had been speaking in fragments for the last hour. Not full sentences. Just pieces. Memories slipping through the drain.
"...he burned the bread again," she whispered once, a faint smile touching her lips. "Always burned the bread."
Finn looked up. "Lucian?"
She nodded slowly. The chains rattled with the movement. "He tried so hard to be normal. For me. For Lucy. Even after everything."
Mira shifted closer, reaching out with what little spirit strength she had left. A thin silver thread connected her to Evelyn for a moment, sharing a flicker of warmth. "He’s coming," she said. "I can feel him. The threads are stronger now."
Dorian stopped pacing. "How long?"
"Soon." Evelyn’s voice was fading again. "He always comes. Even when he shouldn’t."
The chains tightened. Evelyn winced but didn’t cry out. Finn pushed himself up, ignoring the pain in his side, and placed a hand on the nearest link. Earth affinity surged through him, trying to anchor the chain, to slow the drain. It helped for a moment. The pull eased.
"We’re not leaving without you," he said.
Evelyn looked at him. Really looked. For the first time since they arrived, her eyes were clear. "You’re like him. Stubborn."
Finn managed a tired grin. "Learned from the best."
Mira hummed softly, an old orphanage lullaby she barely remembered. The sound filled the chamber for a little while, pushing back against the grey. Dorian joined in, voice rough but steady. They weren’t singing for rescue. They were singing because they were still here. Still together.
Evelyn closed her eyes again, but the smile stayed.
Lucian felt the chamber before he saw it.
The grey around him had grown thinner, more brittle. Cracks of gold light spread outward with every step. The dimension was fighting desperately now, throwing everything it had left at him. He walked through a storm of liquid horrors and void maws, dismantling them with the same quiet patience he had used since the beginning.
He thought about the kids. Finn’s stubborn refusal to stay broken. Mira’s quiet strength. Dorian’s unexpected loyalty. They had become more than students. They had become his.
He thought about Evelyn.
The pull was stronger now. Close.
The final barrier appeared ahead. A wall of chains and grey light, pulsing with the dimension’s last defense. Lucian stopped in front of it. For a long moment, he just looked.
Then he pressed his palm against the barrier.
The grey cracked wide open.
Gold light poured through.
He stepped inside.
