Lucian felt the chamber before he saw it.
The grey had grown brittle around him, cracking like old ice under too much weight. Every step he took sent new fractures spiderwebbing outward, gold light bleeding through the nothing. The dimension fought harder the closer he got, throwing shadows and liquid horrors that dissolved the moment they touched him. He didn’t fight back with fury or grand displays. He simply refused to be slowed.
The pull was stronger now. Steady. Certain. Like a compass needle finding true north after years of spinning.
He walked through the final barrier without pausing. The grey parted like curtains, revealing the prison beyond.
Chains. Everywhere. Thick black links etched with glowing runes, hanging from nothing and everything, pulsing as they drained the life from the people they held. At the center floated Evelyn, suspended like a broken star, silver hair limp, violet eyes half-closed. The kids were clustered near her—Finn pressing a hand to the chains, trying to anchor them with earth. Mira weaving faint silver threads. Dorian standing guard, one arm burned and useless but his jaw set like stone.
They looked up as he stepped through.
"Boss," Finn breathed, voice cracking with relief.
Mira’s eyes filled. Dorian managed a tired grin.
Lucian crossed the distance in a few strides. He didn’t run. Running had never gotten him anywhere good. He simply moved, steady and inevitable, until he stood among them.
The chains rattled louder as he approached, sensing the anomaly in their midst. One lashed out toward him, trying to bind his wrist. He caught it without looking, palm closing around the link. The rune flared, trying to drain him. He simply held it until the glow faded and the chain went slack.
"Hold on," he said quietly.
Finn nodded, stepping back. Mira lowered her staff. Dorian watched with something like awe.
Lucian turned to Evelyn.
She was barely conscious, the chains pulling at her like hungry mouths. But when his shadow fell across her, her eyes opened. Violet. Tired. Real.
"...Lucian," she whispered.
He reached up, hands gentle despite everything. The chains fought him, runes blazing brighter, trying to hold her. He wrapped his fingers around the ones binding her wrists and simply refused. The metal groaned. The runes flickered. One by one, they shattered, falling away like dead leaves.
Evelyn’s body sagged as the last chain broke. She fell forward.
He caught her.
She landed against his chest, light as memory, her silver hair spilling over his shoulder. For a moment, neither of them moved. He held her like she might disappear if he let go. Like she had so many times in his nightmares.
"I’m sorry," he said, voice rough. "I took too long. I slept through years while the world went to shit. While you were here. While the kids—"
She lifted her head just enough to look at him. Her eyes were clearer now, the drain easing. She studied his face like she was memorizing it.
Then she kissed him.
It wasn’t dramatic. No fireworks. No swelling music. Just her lips against his, soft and certain, like she had been waiting for this exact moment across timelines and erasures and everything the universe had thrown at them.
Lucian froze.
His mind went blank. In both timelines, this was his first kiss. He had been too busy surviving, too busy protecting, too busy carrying the weight of infinite possibilities to ever let anyone close enough. He had been practically a virgin in every way that mattered, and now Evelyn—Evelyn—was kissing him like it was the most natural thing in the world.
His hands tightened on her back. He kissed her back, clumsy at first, then surer, like something long buried was finally waking up.
When she pulled away, she was smiling. Small. Tired. Real.
"You came," she said. "That’s all that matters."
She rested her forehead against his, breathing him in. "I love you, Lucian Black. I loved you before the regression. I loved you after. I loved you through every erasure and every fracture. I’m sorry it took this long for me to say it."
Then her eyes fluttered.
She fainted against him, body going limp as the last of the drain caught up with her.
Lucian caught her again, holding her close. The kids watched in silence, something like wonder on their faces.
Finn cleared his throat. "We should get out of here."
Lucian nodded. He lifted Evelyn gently, carrying her like she weighed nothing. The grey around them was fracturing faster now, gold light pouring through the cracks. The dimension was dying, unable to hold against the anomaly at its heart.
They walked out together.
The Veridian soldiers saw them emerge from the rift and fell back, awe written across every face. Lucian didn’t stop. He carried Evelyn through the crater, the kids flanking him, and kept walking until the capital was behind them and the keep was in sight.
Lucy met them at the gates. She took one look at Evelyn in his arms and started crying. Althea stood beside her, eyes wide. Marc and the others gathered, silent and watchful.
Lucian carried Evelyn inside without a word.
He laid her down in the room they had prepared months ago, the one with the window overlooking the garden. He sat beside her, holding her hand, waiting for her to wake.
The kids hovered nearby. Finn leaned against the wall. Mira sat cross-legged on the floor. Dorian paced until someone told him to sit down.
Outside, the night deepened.
Inside, for the first time in what felt like forever, Lucian let himself breathe.
Evelyn stirred after a while. Her eyes opened, finding his immediately.
"You’re here," she whispered.
"I’m here," he said.
She smiled, faint but real, and squeezed his hand.
The world could wait a little longer.
