Evelyn woke to soft light and the smell of clean sheets.

She lay still for a while, letting her body remember what it felt like not to be drained. The chains were gone. The grey was gone. Outside the window, birds called to each other like nothing in the world had ever been wrong.

Lucian sat in the chair beside the bed, head tilted against the wall, eyes closed. He looked older than she remembered and somehow younger at the same time. The lines around his mouth had deepened, but the tension he used to carry in his shoulders had eased a little.

She watched him breathe until he stirred.

His eyes opened. For a second he just looked at her, like he was making sure she was real.

"You’re awake," he said.

"You’re still here."

"Where else would I be?"

She smiled, small and tired. "You froze when I kissed you."

A faint color touched his ears. He looked away. "First time. In both timelines."

"I know." She reached over and took his hand. "You came. That’s all that matters."

He squeezed her fingers once, carefully, like he was still afraid she might vanish.

A soft knock interrupted them. Finn stuck his head in, followed by Mira and Dorian. They looked cleaner than the last time she had seen them, but the exhaustion still sat in their eyes.

"You’re really okay," Finn said, more statement than question.

"I am. Thanks to you three."

Mira hovered near the door, staff in hand. "We felt something earlier. Like the air shifted."

Lucian stood. "We’ll talk about it later. Rest first."

They left after a few more quiet words. Evelyn watched the door close behind them and then looked back at Lucian.

"The others?" she asked.

"Coming."

By midday the air above the keep shimmered.

Lucian stood in the courtyard with Evelyn at his side. Finn, Mira, and Dorian waited a few steps behind. Alistair kept his distance near the wall, arms folded, face unreadable.

The shimmer solidified into a portal of soft gold light. Three figures stepped through.

Lucy came first, silver hair pulled back, eyes already scanning for her brother. Reia and Vyn followed, both looking travel-worn but steady. Althea appeared last, quieter than the rest, watching everything with careful curiosity.

Lucy spotted Evelyn and stopped dead.

For a long moment no one spoke. Then Lucy crossed the courtyard in three strides and pulled Evelyn into a fierce, wordless hug. Reia and Vyn joined a second later, arms wrapping around both of them. The four women stood like that for a while, not saying anything, just holding on.

When they finally stepped back, Lucy wiped her eyes and turned to Lucian. "Marc and Silas stayed behind. They’re still on the outer rim, holding the line against the Outer Gods. They’ll join when they can."

Lucian nodded. "Good."

Evelyn’s gaze drifted past them and landed on Alistair.

The temperature in the courtyard seemed to drop a degree. She didn’t speak. She simply looked at him the way someone looks at an old scar that still aches in the cold. Alistair met her eyes without flinching, but he didn’t step forward either.

Lucian rested a hand lightly on Evelyn’s back. "He’s with us now."

She didn’t answer. She just looked away.

They gathered in the main hall later.

Lucy sat close to Evelyn, still glancing at her every few minutes like she might disappear again. Reia and Vyn took seats on either side of Althea, answering the girl’s quiet questions. Finn, Mira, and Dorian hovered near the wall, clearly unsure where they fit in this larger family. Alistair stayed at the far end of the table, silent.

Lucian kept the explanation short.

"Evelyn is back. The Warden who held her is still out there. The Aethel wants balance, and we’re the things that break it. Marc and Silas are buying us time. We use that time to get stronger and figure out what comes next."

No one argued.

Lucy leaned against Evelyn’s shoulder. "You’re really here."

"I’m here."

Althea studied Evelyn with open curiosity. "You’re the one Uncle Lucian was looking for all this time."

Evelyn smiled faintly. "I suppose I am."

Across the table, Alistair finally spoke. "The Outer Gods are pressing harder. Whatever the Warden reported, they’ve accelerated their plans. We don’t have long."

Evelyn’s expression cooled. She didn’t look at him when she answered. "Then we prepare."

The meeting broke up soon after. People drifted into smaller groups. Lucy stayed close to Evelyn. Reia and Vyn took Althea outside to show her the gardens. The three students watched everything with the wary attention of people who had just realized their teacher had an entire other life.

Lucian found Evelyn on the balcony overlooking the garden as the sun began to drop.

She stood with her hands on the stone rail, silver hair stirring in the evening breeze. He joined her without speaking.

"They remember me," she said after a while.

"They do."

"Even Alistair."

"He does."

She was quiet for a long time. "The last time I saw him, he was the reason everything burned. I still see it when I look at him."

"I know."

"I’m not ready to forgive him."

"You don’t have to."

She turned to face him. The light caught the violet in her eyes. "You really stayed all those years. Looking."

"I did."

"I’m glad you found the kids along the way."

He almost smiled. "They found me more than the other way around."

Evelyn stepped closer and rested her forehead against his chest. He wrapped his arms around her carefully, still half-afraid she might fade.

"I meant what I said," she murmured. "I love you. I never stopped."

He held her tighter.

In the distance, far beyond the capital, the horizon trembled once—soft, unnatural, like something vast shifting in its sleep.

Neither of them mentioned it.

For now, they just stood there, breathing the same air, while the rest of the family moved through the keep behind them and the night settled in.
