My Kingdom Building Done Right!
Chapter 285: The Darkmane Tribe’s Last Stand [Part 4]Troy glanced at the fortress.
His warriors were still fighting valiantly, relentless as they pushed against the monsters trying to overwhelm them with sheer numbers.
Seeing the cracked walls, which had been damaged by the Bronze Dragon, fully repair themselves once again, his worries dropped drastically.
He understood that the collapse of the wall would spell the doom of all the Darkmane warriors.
Of course, he was also well aware that there was only one person who could’ve fixed the walls. And that was none other than Kael of the Aslan Tribe.
’However, without his chieftain’s permission, Kael would never do such a thing,’ Troy thought.
A faint smile crept up his face when it dawned on him. They truly weren’t being treated as mere cannon fodder.
Sure, they might be the bait. But the fisherman was making sure that those who bit on the hook would find themselves flailing on land.
As if to confirm his thoughts, another volley from the Fireshard Catapults boomed across the battlefield.
Each bombardment annihilated over a thousand monsters and seriously injured thousands more.
Troy had decided to buy as much time as possible for this reason. As long as he could hold on until the main bulk of the monster army was annihilated, the chances of his warriors surviving would shoot up.
Dozens died with every passing minute. But as long as they could deal with the flying monsters, the land monsters would continue to be kept at bay.
"Old friend, let’s split our roles," Troy said to the Manticore. "I’ll deal with the dragon. You’ll deal with the flying monsters in the fortress!"
The Manticore growled in response, telling Troy that he should be the one fighting in the fortress, while it dealt with the dragon instead.
"It won’t work," Troy argued back. "You’re too big a target. Sure, the monster might be strong. But if I play my cards right, I can reach its blind spot."
The remaining gemstone on Troy’s necklace glinted, marking his last chance to survive a deadly blow from the dragon.
He volunteered precisely because he knew how dangerous his mission was. Compared to the Manticore, his chance of surviving a face-off against the Bronze Dragon was still higher.
"We have no more time to argue," Troy insisted. "We should..."
He couldn’t finish whatever he was going to say because the Manticore suddenly descended without warning.
If not for the fact that he was using the power of his ring to pull himself toward its body, he might have been thrown off by its sudden descent.
A moment later, a Fire Breath tore through the surrounding black smoke and struck their earlier location.
The Manticore flew as close to the ground as possible, flying over the heads of the monsters near the fortress.
The flaming breath followed the Manticore as it passed over the monster army, incinerating everything in its path.
Some monsters were instantly burned to a crisp, while those with stronger bodies melted from the heat.
It was then that the Manticore grabbed hold of the Basilisk’s tail, which was once again trying to scale the fortress wall, only to hurl it toward the flaming breath.
Soon, a screech filled with anger and pain echoed through the area as the Basilisk was hit by the Dragon’s breath.
Its strong scales melted because of it, causing the large snake to writhe in pain as it crashed to the ground, doing a death roll.
Every monster in its path was either flattened or sent flying by the snake that had suddenly entered a berserk state, not caring whether it hit friend or foe!
Yet, before Troy could even celebrate this sudden change on the battlefield, a tail appeared within the black smoke all of a sudden and hit the side of the Manticore’s body, sending it flying toward the fortress.
Troy forced himself off its back and flew upward.
He watched as the Manticore crashed onto one of the watchtowers on the fortress, destroying it completely with the impact.
The Chieftain of the Darkmane Tribe couldn’t tell if the Manticore was still alive or not. However, among the Guardians of the high-ranking tribes of the Borderlands, he knew the Manticore was the sturdiest.
It was a monster that wouldn’t die from instant-kill attacks.
Aside from that, it had an innate ability to escape three fatal attacks that could have taken its life.
The first one was the Fire Breath.
Although it didn’t die from it, it still suffered grievous injuries.
The next one was the tail attack just now. Although it was a blow that would have already turned an ordinary monster into meat paste, the Manticore should still be strong enough to survive that fatal blow.
Though once again, Troy needed to buy time for it to recover.
Using flight, as well as his ability to pull himself toward anything, Troy faced off against the Bronze Dragon like a madman.
Otto’s bolts continued to provide him cover fire, allowing the Darkmane Tribe chieftain to escape some deadly instances within an inch of his life.
By now, the dragon had become truly enraged, for the insect it had been trying to kill since the start of the battle was still alive.
It couldn’t believe that Troy could live this long, even though he was only one hit away from death.
He was like a mosquito buzzing as it nimbly flew around its body, refusing to get hit no matter what!
With a roar that shook the heavens, the dragon ordered all the flying monsters to attack Troy and ignore the fortress.
Surrounded on all sides, Troy should have felt fear. Yet, he didn’t.
In fact, he even laughed at it.
"Now, this is a scene worthy of my death!" Troy laughed. "Come!"
The Harpies and the Pteranodons flew toward the chieftain with a vengeance, while the Dragon soared high, watching the annoying human with predatory eyes.
Troy felt as if the world around him had slowed down drastically.
His heightened senses in the face of death made him calmer, allowing him to think more clearly.
At that moment, he could smell the familiar scent of death, understanding that his end was near.
But so what?
If he were going to perish, then he would die a worthy death.
In that world where time flowed slowly, Troy activated the power of his other rings.
The ring with a yellow gem at its center glowed brightly. This magical artifact increased the speed of its owner.
Another ring with an orange gem embedded in it also shone brightly, increasing Troy’s strength.
The ring with a green gem embedded in it had the power to push anything away from Troy. He could even push himself away from something if he wished for it.
With the determination and tenacity of a man who had accepted his fate, Troy moved like the reaper of death.
He pushed and pulled with every move. And each time he did it, a monster would die.
In the eyes of the Bronze Dragon, it was the last desperate attempt of a dying man.
It was half-right.
Though if it paid more attention to Troy’s movements, it would realize that the barbarian wasn’t moving away from the dragon.
No.
Instead, he was inching his way toward the Monster King.
Troy momentarily deactivated the power of his necklace, which prevented him from dying from a single blow.
For this reason, his body gradually accumulated wounds from the claws of the Harpies that had managed to scratch him during his high-speed movements.
Yet Troy didn’t care. He moved like a lion that had locked on its target. Its prey.
And when he finally found the opportunity to strike, Troy took it without any hesitation.
With one final burst of speed, Troy pushed himself away from a Pteranodon and flew straight toward the dragon.
However, his flight speed wasn’t enough to outfly his opponent. Not to mention, the dragon was hovering from a distance that couldn’t be breached in a matter of seconds.
It was then that something tore through the formation of the flying monsters, splitting them apart like a school of sardines.
At that moment, the Manticore had come. Battered and bloodied, it had decided to use its remaining life force to allow itself one final charge.
Troy pulled himself toward his Guardian’s back and stood on it like a man with a mission.
Due to the Manticore’s speed surpassing that of the other flying monsters, it shot toward the Dragon like a missile.
When they were only a hundred meters away from the Dragon, it opened its mouth to unleash another breath attack.
The Manticore roared back in defiance. It had no intention of dodging.
Even if it died, it would bash its body against the Monster King and make it understand that even in death, it would still leave its mark!
The Dragon finally unleashed its breath, covering both man and beast in searing flames.
From within that flame, Troy roared.
"I am Troy, Son of Morkan, and Chieftain of the Darkmane Tribe!" Troy declared. "And I’ll be damned if I don’t bring you down with me!"
The dying Manticore, still covered in flames, slammed against the Bronze Dragon’s head.
And a man, whose entire body was now covered in fourth-degree burns, lunged toward the Dragon’s eye with the poisoned dagger Jafar had given him as a parting gift.
A blade made from the Sand Steel of the Sandreaver Tribe, coated with the strongest poison created by the shaman of the Darkmane Tribe!
Green liquid flames oozed from the dagger’s blade like molten lava. A blade Troy had deliberately saved to use against either Godwin or Hagen if they ever fought against each other in mortal combat.
"Glory to the Darkmane Tribe!" Troy roared as he slammed the dagger on the Dragon’s eye with everything he had.
A moment later, a deafening roar that shook the heavens reverberated across the battlefield.
The Monster King, who had looked down with arrogance upon the Darkmane Tribe, had finally felt true pain and fear for the first time since the day it was born.
And the one who dealt this blow came from none other than the barbarian chieftain, who carried the entire honor and dignity of his tribe on his shoulders.
