Chapter 289: Chapter 283: Playing it Fancy
After all, Gray had been a noble before, so he had some experience in this area.
He was certainly more qualified than Zelir.
"Oh..."
Gray nodded in understanding.
"Yes, that’s a tradition."
"Every year, as winter approaches, the most prominent local noble family takes the lead in hosting a ball..."
"They say it’s to pray for the coming year, but it’s really just a platform for the upper class to socialize, show off, and compete with one another."
"My family used to be the one to host it."
"Your family was the most prominent noble family in the area?" Zelir asked curiously.
"I guess you could say that. Truth is, there weren’t many nobles where I’m from, so for the winter ball, we’d even invite a bunch of commoners and farmers to make up the numbers."
Gray scratched his head. "But the Alberti Family is definitely different."
"True," Zelir agreed, nodding.
’Thinking back to his last visit to Bev’s house—that manor, its scale, its grandeur, and the family even owned a mine—they were undoubtedly the most distinguished noble family in Black Stone Town.’
’You couldn’t be the host without the right status.’
"Did Bev invite you personally?" Gray asked.
"Yeah."
"No wonder you never seem interested in other women..." Gray muttered.
"Is there any etiquette I should be aware of for an occasion like this?" Zelir said.
"It’s fine. There’s nothing you really have to follow."
Gray leaned back and waved his hand dismissively.
"Those so-called upper-class folks won’t ostracize you just because you mess up some minor detail."
"I used to have the same worries as you, afraid I’d do something wrong and embarrass the Mans Family. I even hired a special etiquette tutor."
"But when I thought about it later, they’re polite to you not because your etiquette is perfect, but because you’re a scion of the Mans Clan."
"By the same token, you have the title of ’genius Mage.’ As long as you don’t pick your nose and spit right in front of them, it won’t be considered rude."
"And even if you did... they’d probably just think you’re an eccentric."
"The ones who are prim and proper and do everything by the book are either idiots or minor nobles on the fringes of the circle who get pushed around."
"Oh..." Zelir nodded thoughtfully.
"Still, you have to get the basics right... Since it’s a ball, do you know how to ask for a dance partner?"
"I don’t."
"What about simple dance steps?"
"I don’t know those either..."
"Tsk."
Gray looked Zelir up and down. "Besides knowing Magic, you’re no different from a commoner."
"It’s not like I ever put on airs, okay?"
Zelir protested, "Otherwise, why would I be out on missions with you guys every day, covered in dirt and grime?"
"Alright... well, it’s not hard. I can teach you. By the way, do you have a formal suit to wear to the ball?"
"I thought this Magic Robe would be suitable enough..."
"A Magic Robe is cool, but in a place full of silk, lace, and formal wear, it’s going to stick out like a sore thumb."
"You were personally invited by the daughter of the Alberti Family, after all. You can’t just be half-hearted about it, can you?"
Gray sighed. "It’s a good thing you came to me. I’ll take you out shopping myself tomorrow."
...
The next day at noon, the weather was crisp and cool.
Zelir arrived at Iris Street, a place he rarely set foot in.
He looked up at the building before him—though only two stories tall, it occupied a prime location—and let out a low sigh.
’The decor really is something else.’
The exterior walls were built from black rock polished as smooth as a mirror, and huge, floor-to-ceiling display windows revealed a bright and open storefront.
The warm yellow light from within made the hanging clothes appear particularly elegant and grand.
This was the meeting place Gray and Zelir had agreed on.
He didn’t have to wait long before Gray appeared.
With his hands in his pockets, Gray sauntered over from the corner of the street, letting out a yawn.
"This shop isn’t cheap, is it?" Zelir said.
"Compared to a regular tailor shop, of course it’s not cheap."
Gray said, as if it were the most obvious thing in the world.
"When it comes to anything related to the Nobility, don’t even think about saving money. They’d charge you several times more even for a cup of water."
He pushed open the carved mahogany door.
The moment Zelir stepped inside, he felt his feet sink into something soft.
It was a woolen carpet that covered the entire shop floor, muffling all footsteps.
There was no smell of leather in the air, only a faint, heartwarming fragrance.
A complex Crystal chandelier hung from the ceiling, casting a soft, amber glow that created an intimate, hazy, and high-class atmosphere.
Compared to the clothing store Zelir had visited before, this place could be described as luxurious, but not in an overly ostentatious way.
A sense of understated elegance washed over him.
"Good day, esteemed guests. I am Luo Wei, the owner of this establishment."
A middle-aged man in sophisticated attire came forward to greet them.
He was slender with a mustache, and his unhurried tone was pleasant and calming.
"What can I do for you?"
Unlike Barrett, Luo Wei’s appearance gave off a... very trustworthy feeling.
Like an impeccable old butler, or a scrupulous professional.
"Mr. Luo Wei, we’d like to have two formal suits custom-made," Gray said, clearly familiar with the process.
"It would be my honor to serve you both. May I ask what occasion they are for?"
Luo Wei nodded slightly. "A formal court audience, or a private salon?"
"Something in between. A social ball."
Gray stated their needs concisely.
