Chapter 290: Chapter 283: Playing Around (Part 2)
"It needs to be formal, easy to dance in, and tailored for movement. So none of that restrictive court style that chokes you to death. We’re looking for something dignified and comfortable."
"Hmm... I see. This must be for the Alberti Clan’s winter ball."
Shopkeeper Luo Wei smiled. "We’ve had a lot more customers coming in for custom orders because of it."
"I’m all too familiar with such occasions. Please, follow me. I’m certain I can create formalwear that will satisfy you both."
Following Shopkeeper Luo Wei, Gray and Zelir stepped onto a spiral staircase covered with a red carpet.
"Two sets?" Zelir asked Gray in a low voice as they went up the stairs.
"I need one too, or they’ll probably stop me at the main gate."
Gray pursed his lips. "Or would you rather they think I’m your attendant?"
The view on the second floor opened up.
They arrived at a spacious fitting room. This place was different from Barrett’s private chambers.
All sorts of stately garments hung from the racks. In the center stood five or six mannequins, each dressed in magnificent formalwear.
Two attendants stood respectfully on either side of the room.
Shopkeeper Luo Wei clapped his hands lightly, and the two attendants came forward, their movements precise and serious.
"Gentlemen, please remove your outer coats," Luo Wei said with a smile.
Gray and Zelir both took off their coats. When Luo Wei took Zelir’s Magic Robe, a look of admiration flashed in his eyes.
"I don’t know the first thing about Magic, but practicality aside, the cut of this design is truly excellent..."
After carefully hanging it on the coat rack, the two attendants whipped out their soft measuring tapes.
They then began to measure Zelir and Gray.
"Arms out, relax your back muscles."
From the basics—shoulder width, chest, and waist—to finer details like neck circumference and arm span, nothing was missed.
While the attendants took measurements, Luo Wei wasn’t idle. He drifted about the room like the wind, his critical gaze sweeping over everything.
He would walk and then stop, as if visualizing the final garments in his mind.
After the measurements were done, Luo Wei walked over, holding a coordinated sample outfit.
"Since it’s for a ball, I recommend this long tailcoat."
Luo Wei unfolded the coat, held it up in front of Zelir for a moment, and nodded in satisfaction.
"The color is a deep midnight blue. It’s close to black, but with more depth than pure black."
"It’s cut short in the front and long in the back. The tail-like back will perfectly elongate your silhouette and create a beautiful arc when you spin."
Luo Wei painted a complete picture.
"Inside, a slim-fitting velvet vest in a matching color, accented with a silver chain."
"And underneath it all, a snow-white, stand-collar shirt. A very classic combination that never goes out of style."
Finally, Luo Wei’s gaze shifted down to Zelir’s shoes.
"As for footwear... a pair of high leather boots will suffice. Sturdy and respectable."
"What do you think?"
Zelir was a bit lost listening to all this. He really didn’t have any particular opinions or say in these matters.
But Luo Wei seemed very professional.
’Trusting him should be the right call.’
"Whatever you think is best..." Zelir could only nod.
"There are also ties, tie pins, and decorative cufflinks... We have Sapphire and pearl collections that just came in," Luo Wei continued.
"No need to choose. Just pick whatever you think matches. I’m not picky."
Zelir gave a polite wave of his hand; just hearing about all these things gave him a headache. "I trust you."
"Thank you for your trust." Luo Wei placed a hand over his chest.
"You really don’t have to put much effort into choosing. Your face and figure can pull off anything," Gray said, looking Zelir up and down.
Gray, however, had some requirements for his own attire.
After his measurements were taken, Gray had Luo Wei bring over several sample outfits for him to try.
Although they were all tailcoats, Gray was very particular about the length of the tails and other small details.
As for the color, he chose a more flamboyant burgundy.
Once everything was decided, Luo Wei started to tally up the bill.
His eyes behind his gold-rimmed glasses scanned the order quickly, and a hint of apology appeared on his face.
"Gentlemen, about the delivery time... While I’d love to say we can finish with ease, our standard delivery time is usually half a month."
"Since this is to be ready for the Alberti Clan’s winter ball in a few days, we’ll have to have our tailors work through the night..."
"So, there will be an extra charge."
"Hmm..."
Zelir was already prepared for this. He nodded slightly. "So, how much?"
"Including the rush fee... that will be fifteen Gold Coins per set," Luo Wei stated the price.
*Phew...*
Hearing the price, Zelir let out a sigh of relief. The two words ’so cheap’ almost slipped out.
Compared to the three hundred and twenty Gold Coins for his Magic Robe, fifteen Gold Coins seemed like an absolute bargain.
’Then again,’ he thought, ’I didn’t choose any high-end fabrics this time, nor did I pick any expensive gemstone Accessories. It’s all the Basic models.’
’Still, fifteen Gold Coins is several years’ income for an ordinary family.’
’I’m really getting a bit out of touch with the real world...’
"Alright, so that’s Thirty Gold Coins in total, right?" Zelir prepared to pay for Gray’s share as well.
"No need, I can get it myself."
Gray, ever casual, pulled out his Gold Coins to pay without the slightest hint of reluctance.
"It’s been a while since I wore something this flashy and impractical... I’m kind of nostalgic for it."
"Won’t this be too much of an expense for you? After all, I’m the one who asked you to take me..." Zelir hesitated.
"I’ve made a good bit of money following you around. It’s only fifteen Gold Coins."
Gray flashed a mysterious smile.
"Besides... I’m quite interested in going to this ball myself. I’m sure there will be plenty of young ladies from the Nobility attending, right?"
"..."
Zelir instantly retracted his intention to pay for Gray.
’So he’s going to hunt for women.’
"Aren’t you afraid their fathers will come after you to settle the score?" Zelir raised an eyebrow.
"Tch... You think they’re all prim and proper in private?"
Gray adjusted his collar. "They play pretty wild."
...
After ordering the formalwear, Gray brought Zelir to the training grounds.
Not to practice Swordsmanship, of course, but etiquette.
CLAP CLAP.
Gray clapped his hands and cleared his throat.
"Since it’s a ball, there are some basic courtesies you’ll need to learn."
"First, let’s start with the most fundamental part: the invitation."
"When the music starts, men and women will be mingling in the hall. That’s when you need to start looking for your dance partner."
"Of course, you don’t need to look. It’ll definitely be Bev."
"When the time comes, you do it just like this."
Gray stood a few steps away from Zelir, fixed his gaze directly on him, and began to walk forward slowly with his head high and chest out.
"Pay attention to my eyes. Don’t let them wander, and don’t be afraid to make eye contact."
Gray stopped one step in front of Zelir.
He placed his left hand behind his back, gracefully dropped to one knee, and then slowly extended his right hand, palm facing Zelir.
"My fair lady, would you do me the honor of this dance?"
The cold wind howled as the two grown men stared at each other in the sandy training grounds.
"What do I do next?" Zelir couldn’t help but ask.
"What comes next isn’t your concern. That’s for the lady to worry about."
Gray stood up. "Just copy what I did."
"That’s so pretentious..."
Zelir shook his head. "And having to get down on one knee and all that."
"After becoming an Adventurer, I started to think it was pretentious, too."
Gray shrugged.
"But it can’t be helped. That’s how balls are. It’s not like with us Adventurers, where you can just lock eyes with a woman in a tavern and tumble into bed."
"And let me tell you, at that moment, in a girl’s eyes, you’re no different from a Prince Charming or the man of her dreams."
"Once she accepts the invitation, you’re more than halfway there..."
As he spoke, Gray’s expression grew distant, a smile spreading across his face.
"Be serious!"
Zelir yanked Gray back from his reverie.
