My Martial Dao Has No Bottlenecks

Chapter 142 - 96: Great Success in the Wind and Thunder Slash

Liang Cheng took the package. It was heavy in his hands. He opened it to find three items inside:

A ledger.

A black Iron Token, about the size of his palm.

And a slip of paper, mostly soaked through with blood.

The characters on the paper were crooked, clearly written with the last of someone’s strength:

"West Street Warehouse Number Three. The cloth scrap in Mother’s hand is fake. Zhi’Er, I’m sor—"

He obviously didn’t have time to finish the last word.

The Token was jet-black. Its front was engraved with a twisted flame pattern, while the back bore a line of small characters: Jia-Xu-Nine. The material was identical to the Token he had obtained from the Dongshan Mine.

The Fire Worship Sect!

Liang Cheng then quickly flipped through the ledger. It was a list of transactions for West Street Warehouse Number Three from the past year or two. He closed the ledger and asked, "What else did he say?"

Uncle Wang wiped away his tears. "He said the mistress didn’t kill herself. That piece of cloth clutched in her hand was planted there by someone. At the time, he was just begging the mistress to save the young miss. He said he had failed the young miss, failed the Qiao Family..."

The old man suddenly grabbed Liang Cheng’s arm with surprising strength.

"Liang Zhenchuan, this old servant has been with the Qiao Family for forty years. The mistress’s kindness to me was as heavy as a mountain. I beg you, you must get to the bottom of this! The mistress can’t have died in vain. Young Master Xu Zhi wouldn’t have lied before his death. He can’t have died in vain either. I beg you, you must get justice for the mistress!"

Liang Cheng was silent for a moment before giving a firm nod.

"Where is Xu Zhi’s body?"

"This old servant didn’t dare make a scene. Last night, under the cover of a cargo shipment, I temporarily hid him in the cellar of the Qiao Family’s dock warehouse. I’ve packed the body in ice, otherwise I was afraid it would decompose and hinder your investigation."

Uncle Wang then lowered his voice. "But I’m afraid we can’t hide him for long. Early this morning, some new people suddenly appeared outside the mansion. I fear they’re spies for someone with an agenda."

"Give me the warehouse address and the key. You go home first and act like you know nothing. Remember, your young miss will only be safe if you know nothing."

"Remember, act as if everything is normal."

Uncle Wang nodded. "Yes, Liang Zhenchuan. This old servant understands. Don’t you worry."

Liang Cheng didn’t rush to the Qiao Family’s dock warehouse. After properly stowing away the ledger, Token, and blood-soaked note, he sent for Li Mu.

"Li Mu, have you made any headway on the matter I asked you to investigate?"

Li Mu nodded.

"Senior Brother, I’ve already made some progress on the task you gave me."

After Li Mu detailed his findings, a sharp glint flashed in Liang Cheng’s eyes. ’I didn’t expect this other discovery. Interesting.’

"Very good. For now, come with me."

"Yes."

...

「The Qiao Mansion’s Dock Warehouse.」

After moving aside a pile of goods, they found Xu Zhi lying on a makeshift wooden plank bed, his body covered by a white cloth and preserved with blocks of ice.

Lifting the cloth, Liang Cheng saw the wound on his chest. It had been stabbed into his left ribs, piercing through his lung. The technique was clean and ruthless.

Killed by a single sword strike.

"A True Qi Realm expert."

Liang Cheng crouched down for a closer look. "The Sword Qi is sharp and fierce. This was no ordinary expert."

Liang Cheng stood there, looking at Xu Zhi’s pale face.

The once-arrogant third young master of the Xu Family was now a cold corpse. He had once coveted Qiao Zhi, which had led to a conflict between him and Liang Cheng.

Li Mu was a bit puzzled. "Senior Brother, if he was attacked by a True Qi Realm expert, how could he have possibly made it back to the Qiao Mansion?"

Liang Cheng nodded.

’This matter is far from simple,’ he thought. He covered the body with the white cloth again and turned to leave the cellar.

"Li Mu, go find out which family owns West Street Warehouse Number Three."

"Yes."

...

Not long after Liang Cheng returned to the Martial Arts Academy, Li Mu came back with the results. Liang Cheng told him to keep a low profile and continue investigating.

That night, Liang Cheng went to the Treasure Pavilion.

Qian Wanjing was on the second floor in a private room, checking his accounts. A flicker of surprise crossed his face when he saw Liang Cheng arrive.

"Liang Zhenchuan, what brings you here...?"

"Shopkeeper Qian."

Liang Cheng cut him off directly. "West Street Warehouse Number Three. Is it a property of the Treasure Pavilion?"

Qian Wanjing’s smile froze. He put down his ledger and slowly wiped his hands. "Why does Liang Zhenchuan ask?"

"A personal grudge."

The answer was somewhat unexpected to Qian Wanjing.

He was silent for a few breaths before speaking slowly, "Is Liang Zhenchuan still unwilling to let the Xu Family go? Otherwise, it would be impossible for an ordinary person to find out that the Xu Family secretly leases a warehouse from my Treasure Pavilion."

Qian Wanjing stood up, walked to the window to glance outside, and then shut it tightly.

"On the surface, West Street Warehouse Number Three belongs to the Yongchang Warehouse, owned by a man with the surname Chen. But in reality, it’s the Xu Family’s private storehouse."

"The Treasure Pavilion doesn’t know what’s stored in the warehouse?"

"We don’t."

Qian Wanjing shook his head. "The warehouse is leased by the Xu Family. My Treasure Pavilion has always operated on the principle of integrity, so naturally, we don’t interfere too much."

Qian Wanjing sat back down, his expression complicated. "However, Liang Zhenchuan, take a word of advice from old Qian. That West Street warehouse is a hornet’s nest. If you stir it up, a whole swarm of people will come out to bite you."

Liang Cheng said calmly, "Isn’t it just the Xu Family?"

Qian Wanjing shook his head and said nothing, merely dipping his finger in his tea and writing two characters on the table before speaking.

"What if the Xu Family is just a front? Liang Zhenchuan, since the previous case was already closed with Xu Tianxing’s death, why must we keep digging into it?"

"I know Liang Zhenchuan is an upright man, but the Jianghu isn’t all about fighting and killing. Isn’t it better for everyone to make money peacefully?"

Liang Cheng didn’t speak. Qian Wanjing stared at him for a long time before finally letting out a sigh.

"Fine. Since you’re dead set on investigating, I’ll say one more thing."

He leaned forward, his voice barely a whisper. "Ten days ago, the accountant for the Yongchang Warehouse died suddenly. They said he slipped and fell into the water."

"What was the accountant’s name?"

"His surname was Sun. Sun Youfu. He lived on Osmanthus Lane in the east of the city and had a paralyzed old mother."

Qian Wanjing paused. "On the third day after his death, his mother also disappeared. The neighbors said she was picked up by a distant relative."

"Shopkeeper Qian seems to know a great deal..."

Qian Wanjing’s expression changed, and he gave an awkward laugh. "I just happen to know a few things. After all, the Treasure Pavilion’s business is all over the city, so it’s only natural I’d hear more than most."

Liang Cheng didn’t press the matter. He stood and cupped his fist. "Thank you."

Qian Wanjing rose to see him out. After Liang Cheng had left, his expression turned grim.

’That kid is as difficult as they say. He almost tricked me into spilling everything.’

"How is it? Has the news been spread?"

A figure appeared from the shadows.

"Rest assured, everything is prepared. Those who need to know, already know."

"Good. This concerns ’that thing’. There can be no mistakes."

"Yes."

...

After leaving the Treasure Pavilion, Liang Cheng was on his way back to the Martial Arts Academy when a sudden chill ran down his spine. He faintly sensed that something was wrong.

His hand gripped the hilt of his saber.

"Who’s there? Show yourself!"
