Early the next morning, news that Liang Cheng had been attacked by a True Essence Realm expert and his fate was unknown spread throughout the entire city, reminding many of the Li Family massacre thirty years ago.
It seemed peace in Lin Wu City was about to be shattered.
That same day, Shen Wenyuan personally came to the Martial Arts Academy to visit Liang Cheng but was turned away. Unable to see Liang Cheng, he returned to the City Lord’s Mansion, his mood dark.
That same day, Commander Yue Shan led the guards of the City Lord’s Mansion in a city-wide search.
Unexpectedly, Wu Zhenshan, the Treasurer of the Martial Preparation Hall who’d previously had friction with Liang Cheng, also brought his own men to assist Yue Shan in the search.
For a time, panic swept through all of Lin Wu City.
Three days later, Bai Hong personally came to the back mountain with Lü Bingchen and Yan Song. He asked Elder Huang, "When will Liang Cheng wake up?"
Just as Elder Huang was about to answer, a faint groan came from the bed. Liang Cheng’s eyelashes fluttered, and he slowly opened his eyes.
His gaze was vacant at first, but it quickly cleared as he struggled to sit up.
Elder Huang complained inwardly, ’This kid’s acting rivals my own.’
"Don’t move."
Having been paid, Elder Huang was always thorough. He pressed Liang Cheng down. "Your internal organs have just stabilized. Any sudden movements will worsen your injuries."
Liang Cheng nodded and looked at Bai Hong, his voice hoarse. "Greetings, Academy Head, Master, First Seat. Please forgive me for being unable to offer a proper salute at this time."
Bai Hong looked at him, a flash of approval in his eyes. "You were attacked by a True Essence Realm master. To have survived is a blessing from the heavens. Since you’re injured, there’s no need for such formalities. Now, tell us in detail what happened that night."
Liang Cheng collected himself and clearly recounted the entire sequence of events: leaving the Treasure Pavilion, encountering Xu Jinjiang, and finally being ambushed by the black-robed man.
"Xu Jinjiang admitted it himself. After being stuck in the True Qi Realm for fifty years, unable to break through, he joined the Fire Worship Sect. He began cultivating the Blood Erosion Force in an attempt to extend his life and achieve a breakthrough."
"When that black-robed man attacked, the black True Essence in his palm seemed to devour light. It was sinister and bone-chillingly cold. It shared the same heretical origins as the Xu Family’s Blood Erosion Force, but it was far more pure and domineering."
After a moment, Bai Hong spoke slowly. "The Blood Erosion Force is an Inner Cultivation Method that only those at the Outer Sect Guardian Level of the Fire Worship Sect can practice. Xu Jinjiang was in seclusion for ten years. It seems he was transforming his cultivation base to break through to the True Essence Realm."
He then turned to Yan Song. "How many people are left in the Xu Family?"
Yan Song replied immediately, "Seventeen direct descendants, forty-three branch family members, and including servants and guards, the total is just over one hundred and twenty people."
"Keep them all confined to the mansion. Seal off all their properties and warehouses. Not a single person is to escape. If even one gets away, I will hold you personally responsible."
A harsh glint flashed in Yan Song’s eyes. "Understood."
He then turned and strode away. Immediately, the low, urgent sounds of orders being issued came from outside the pavilion.
Lü Bingchen looked at Liang Cheng and sighed. "Next time you get a lead, let us know first. You might not be so lucky a second time."
"I understand."
"Good that you understand."
Bai Hong stood up. "Rest and recover here. Elder Huang will look after you. Since the Martial Arts Academy has named you a True Inheritor, we will ensure your safety. The matter with the Xu Family will require you to act personally, so focus on your recovery."
He walked to the door, then stopped and turned back. His gaze fell upon Liang Cheng, and he studied him for a moment.
"Your foundation is even more perfect than I imagined. How many True Qi Seeds did you actually condense?"
"Five!"
A profound look flashed in Bai Hong’s eyes, but he didn’t press the matter. "Mm. Focus on your recovery."
With that, he and Lü Bingchen pushed open the door and left.
The room fell silent once more.
Elder Huang let out a cold snort but said nothing.
’This kid’s recovery speed is even faster than I imagined. He’s mostly fine now. Few people would believe it if I told them.’
"Kid, don’t overdo it. Going too far is as bad as not going far enough."
Liang Cheng nodded. ’Now that my goal is achieved,’ he thought, ’it’s time to put an end to this matter.’
He then asked the Steward Disciple waiting outside to summon Li Mu.
"How did it go? Any news on what I asked you to investigate?"
"Just as you predicted, Senior Brother, there’s definitely something unusual."
Liang Cheng nodded after Li Mu explained in detail.
"Keep watching them, but don’t startle the snake."
"Yes. But, Senior Brother, your injuries...?"
"It’s nothing serious. My mother doesn’t know, does she?"
"No, we’ve kept it from her. No one told her."
"Good. Let’s head back to True Inheritance Peak. It’s time to get down to business."
"Alright!"
...
「Three days later.」
「Xu Mansion, Ancestral Hall.」
Liang Cheng, his face a little pale, stood with his hands clasped behind his back before the Xu Family’s ancestral tablets. Yan Song stood beside him in the same posture. Behind them were several dozen disciples from the Law Enforcement Hall, their auras grim and menacing.
Wu Zhenshan and Shen Wenyuan were also present. After offering some words of concern for Liang Cheng, they stood quietly to the side, not saying a word.
The Martial Arts Academy was taking the lead today. Neither Wu Zhenshan nor Shen Wenyuan wanted to make a move, lest they provoke the Academy into doing something drastic.
Members of the Xu Family, from both the direct and branch lines, knelt on the floor. Their faces were ashen as they trembled uncontrollably. Xu Feng’s expression was especially grim.
’He never could have imagined it. The Supreme Elder, who had endured such great humiliation after his father Xu Tianxing’s death, had actually tried to assassinate Liang Cheng in the dead of night.’
’At that moment, his thoughts turned to Xu Zhi. When Xu Zhang had died, Xu Zhi had all but married into the Qiao Family. Did he feel this same complex turmoil back then?’
Just then, several Steward Disciples from the Martial Arts Academy carried in three large camphorwood chests and placed them in the center of the ancestral hall. Wu Zhenshan’s gaze swept over the chests, his expression unreadable.
The first chest contained account ledgers.
They meticulously recorded ten years of the Xu Family’s transactions with various factions. Beside nearly thirty percent of the entries, a small flame symbol was drawn next to the listed item.
The second chest contained letters.
It was secret correspondence between Xu Tianxing and various parties. The letters detailed resource transfers, intelligence exchanges, and even arrangements for the Fire Worship Sect’s periodic blood sacrifices.
The third chest contained physical objects.
Inside were over a dozen dark Iron Tokens. They had a flame pattern on the front and serial numbers like "Jia-Xu" and "Yi-Hai" engraved on the back—identical to the ones Liang Cheng had recovered from the Dongshan Mine and from Xu Zhi.
