My Online Girlfriend Has a Twin Sister

Chapter 439 - 291: A Fine Cabbage Was Rooted Up by the Same Pig

"Of course I’m not—"

Chen Yuan wanted to argue, to explain all the effort he’d put in, but it was starting to seem like an unsolvable problem. Caught in the middle of it all, he found it impossible to voice his bewilderment.

In the middle of their conversation, the sound of slow footsteps approached.

The family of three immediately fell silent, all turning to look toward the source of the sound.

Jiang Yao came into view, carrying a tray of tea. She was concentrating on keeping her steps steady; the heavy tea set in her hands forced her to walk slowly.

Chen Yuan quickly got up to help her. He knew Jiang Yao rarely did chores. Dropping and breaking something would be a minor issue, but he absolutely couldn’t let her get scalded.

However, as Chen Yuan approached, Jiang Yao looked at him and whispered, "It’s okay, I can handle it. You can sit down."

Seeing the insistence in her eyes, Chen Yuan reluctantly lowered his hands.

Yaoyao’s every step was a pause, making one’s heart pound in suspense. After a tense ten-odd seconds, she finally set the tea down steadily on the table, letting out a huge sigh of relief.

"Sir, Ma’am, this is the tea my sister brewed just now. You must be thirsty after your long journey, so please have some tea. The food will be ready in a little while." When Jiang Yao put on her innocent act, no one could have guessed at the cunning side she kept hidden.

With her bright, lightly smiling face and the way she reached up to wipe sweat from her brow, it was hard not to find her endearing.

She was the very picture of a pure, sweet, girl-next-door—the kind of sensible daughter every parent dreams of.

This was especially true of her hair, which she had just tied back to help in the kitchen. A bright yellow, floral-patterned ribbon was tied askew, holding her smooth, long hair, which she had gathered over one shoulder.

Chen Yuan was marveling at how perfectly Jiang Yao’s outfit suited a family gathering when he suddenly felt his parents shoot him a sharp glance. He immediately turned his head and stared at the ceiling.

The meaning behind their glare was clear: ’How could you, you scoundrel, have the heart to two-time such a wonderful girl?’

"We’ve really put you two sisters to a lot of trouble. Come, sit next to me. You’re Jiang Yao, is that right?"

"That’s right, Ma’am. You can just call me Yaoyao."

"Well, I won’t be modest then, dear. You’re just so lovely and fresh," Liu He said, pulling Yaoyao’s hand. Her tone was enthusiastic, but her eyes held a hint of unspoken guilt. "To tell you the truth, I’m practically an old crone, but this is the first time I’ve ever seen such a handsome girl."

"By handsome, she means pretty," Chen Yuan quickly explained.

Yaoyao’s eyes widened in understanding. She pursed her lips and said gently, "Ma’am, you’re hardly an old woman. I can barely see a single wrinkle on your face, and you’ve kept such a good figure. The moment I saw you, I could tell you have such an elegant presence. Chen Yuan always told me you were both kind and dignified, and meeting you today reminds me of a wonderful teacher I had in high school. She produced so many excellent students. You’re just like her, Ma’am... only prettier."

"Oh, my, listen to you. You’re making me blush," Liu He said. "Teaching and nurturing students is just a teacher’s duty. And it’s true, Yuan has been afraid of me since he was little. I’m honestly surprised he would even use the word ’kind’ to describe me."

"If you don’t mind my asking, Ma’am, what kind of skincare products do you use? Your skin is in such amazing condition."

"I don’t use any. I just wash my face with water. If I manage to use half a jar of basic face cream in a whole year, I’d consider that being diligent. I’m always too busy with school affairs to think about a beauty regimen."

"Really? In that case, you must have naturally good skin. Ma’am, are you around forty? You don’t have a single age spot. Should I be guessing even younger?"

"I’m nearly fifty! You’re too sweet," Liu He said, beaming from ear to ear and patting Yaoyao’s hand. "But you’re right about the age spots. All the other teachers my age have them, but you can’t see a single one on me. They’ve told me how envious they are more than once."

"See, I knew it..."

Watching from the sidelines, Chen Yuan was floored by a scene that completely defied his expectations. Jiang Yao was speaking to his formidable mother with such calm and poise, and in just a few sentences, she had completely closed the distance between them.

’This is unbelievable.’

He found himself admiring Yaoyao’s knack for flattery. If he were given a script with those same lines, he’d stumble and stammer his way through it. He was too thin-skinned for this sort of thing, but the words just rolled off Yaoyao’s tongue.

As she spoke, Yaoyao occasionally snuck a glance at him. A smile touched Chen Yuan’s lips. He understood that he didn’t need to say anything more; he just had to leave this matter in the hands of the two sisters.

’The most dangerous part is over.’

Chen Yuan suddenly felt a mountain of pressure lift from his shoulders, replaced by an indescribable sense of relief. It felt like the last day of summer vacation, when you hastily scribbled down your homework, then spent the night anxiously awaiting the first day of school... only for the teacher, despite wearing a stern expression, to not even check the assignments and simply tell everyone to put them away and start the lesson.

It was that same feeling of having gotten away with it.

He looked down, pulled out his phone, and checked the time. It was almost noon.

"This tea is excellent. Mellow and fragrant on the palate, with a lingering aftertaste," Mr. Chen said after taking a sip. His brow smoothed, and his eyes glinted with appreciation.

"You enjoy tea, sir?"

"I have some now and then."

"Oh," Yaoyao said, nodding. She spoke gently, "My sister is quite the tea connoisseur. If you like it, sir, you must take some with you when you leave. I’ll go get it right now."

"Oh, there’s no need for that."

Before he could finish, Yaoyao was already on her feet and heading for the door to the apartment across the hall. Ignoring Mr. Chen’s protests, she scurried away with light steps, disappearing from sight in an instant.

Liu He and Mr. Chen both craned their necks to watch her go, a look of longing on their faces as if they were reluctant to see her leave even for a moment.

"That girl is just so thoughtful."

"Isn’t she though."

Yaoyao returned half a minute later, her white dress fluttering around her. With a radiant smile on her face, she came back and sat down, holding a box of tea.

She was still catching her breath as she whispered, "Sir, I think this is the same kind my sister was brewing earlier."
