My Overpowered Bunny Girls

Chapter 126: The Inner Sanctum (1)

The Gate sealed shut behind them with a grinding, tectonic finality, locking the primary assault group inside the dark, beating heart of Drak’thar.

The central artery of the monolith was a sprawling corridor of polished obsidian. Jagged gold runes were inlaid into the floor, pulsing in time with the Tower’s suffocating heartbeat—thrum-thrum-thrum—a rhythm so deep Nathan felt it rattling his teeth. The ambient temperature spiked, the air growing thick and heavy with the acrid stench of sulfur and ancient, oxidized blood. The soft golden light of the upper floors had curdled into an angry, bruised crimson, stretching their shadows across the glass-like walls.

Somewhere far below, something impossibly vast was waiting for them.

The vanguard pushed forward in a tight, disciplined diamond formation. Captain Seraphine led Silver Drake at the spearhead, her silver hair catching the red light as her armored constructs formed an interlocking wall of steel and mana. Right behind them marched Red Dragon, Captain Torren resting a massive battleaxe on his pauldron while his Salamander vented thick streams of steam into the corridor. Goldcrest secured the left flank under Derek Stone, his Salamander radiating a violent, volcanic heat.

Celestial Peak locked down the right.

Nathan’s [Hunter’s Insight] washed over the dark corridor ahead. The sheer density of enemies had dropped drastically compared to the outer ruins, but the individual mana signatures were terrifyingly dense. The Tower was done throwing cannon fodder at them.

"Contacts ahead," Nathan warned, his voice cutting through the heavy silence. "Four targets. Massive physical profiles. Heavy armor. Elite classifications."

Seraphine didn’t hesitate. "Halt advance! Vanguard, lock shields! Artillery, prime and hold. We take the charge!"

The shadows at the far end of the hall peeled back, and the first true horrors of the inner sanctum stepped into the light.

Drak’thar Guardians. They were towering, eight-foot-tall reptilian juggernauts, their scales the color of burnished brass. They were encased head-to-toe in ornate, interlocking golden armor that hummed with defensive runes. In their hands, they carried massive obsidian halberds wreathed in dark, crackling fire. They did not roar. They did not sprint wildly. They advanced in perfect, terrifying lockstep.

"Hold the line!" Seraphine roared. "Brace for impact!"

The Guardians struck as one. Their halberds swept down in a synchronized, devastating arc. CLANG. The kinetic shockwave of obsidian meeting the Silver Drake shield wall rippled down the corridor. The armored constructs buckled, their metal feet carving deep grooves into the floor, but the line held. Seraphine’s griffin lunged through a gap, its talons screeching uselessly across a Guardian’s golden breastplate.

"Red Dragon, break that armor!" Torren bellowed, swinging his axe forward.

His pyromancers unleashed a concentrated inferno. Salamanders exhaled blinding torrents of flame, and fire mages hurled hyper-dense bolts of kinetic heat directly at the frontline. The sheer thermal shock caused the Guardians’ golden armor to glow cherry-red, the metal softening and dripping like wax. Yet, the giants didn’t flinch. They simply waded through the fire, their flaming halberds mercilessly battering the Silver Drake shields.

"Celestial Peak! Peel the left flank!" Nathan ordered, stepping out of the direct line of fire. "Mirko, Golem—pin the target! Elise, exploit the thermal shock! Dillon, Cloudy—harass the second! Garrett, support the main wall!"

"Finally, a fight with some weight to it!" Mirko exploded forward, [Impenetrable Fortress] flaring to life. She slammed into the leftmost Guardian, catching its descending halberd on her emerald barrier. The impact spiderwebbed the obsidian floor beneath her boots, but the shield held. "You hit hard! I respect that! But raw kinetic force without leverage is just throwing a tantrum!"

The Frost Golem lumbered into the Guardian’s blind spot, winding up and burying a crystalline fist directly into the creature’s superheated knee joint. CRUNCH. The rapid shift from extreme heat to absolute zero caused the golden armor to violently fracture.

Elise was already moving. Aurora’s Heart blazed, manifesting a hyper-dense [Glacial Lance]. She fired. CRRRRACK. The spear punched flawlessly into the shattered joint, freezing the synovial fluid and locking the Guardian’s leg entirely. As the giant stumbled, Mirko unleashed an [Aegis Strike] that carved straight through its compromised breastplate, finishing it.

Above the fray, Dillon became a blur of ozone. As the second Guardian swept its halberd upward, Dillon chained [Flash Step] through the air, bypassing the massive blade entirely. [Thunder Edge] fell squarely on the giant’s pauldron. KRAK-BOOOOOM. The lightning violently bypassed the armor’s conductivity, cooking the scaled flesh beneath. Cloudy followed up immediately, her static discharge chaining across the Guardian’s eyes and blinding it long enough for the Red Dragon mages to blow its head off.

On the opposite flank, Derek Stone was dismantling his target with surgical brutality. His Salamander unleashed a hyper-focused beam of white-hot fire that physically melted through a Guardian’s chest plate. Derek slipped behind the staggering giant, his blade finding the unarmored gaps at the back of its knees and throat with terrifying, emotionless precision.

Under the combined, relentless assault, the final Guardian collapsed, its molten armor smoking against the cool stone.

"Report," Seraphine demanded, breathing heavily.

"No casualties. Heavy mana expenditure," Torren grunted, rolling his shoulders. "Those were basic sentries. If this is the baseline for the inner sanctum, we are going to bleed for every inch."

"Then we manage our stamina," Nathan said, lowering his bow. "The Tower is trying to bleed our reserves dry before the boss room."

Derek caught Nathan’s eye across the smoking corridor. "Your unit’s synchronization is dialed in. Combining the thermal shock from the fire with the Golem’s ice to shatter the armor. Smart."

"We adapt quickly," Nathan replied. "Your Salamander’s core has stabilized. That heat beam cored a heavily armored elite in seconds."

Derek’s jaw flexed, the scar on his cheek pulling tight. He gave a single, curt nod of acknowledgment. "Let’s keep moving."

Floor 7 was a mausoleum of ash and ghosts.

The corridor bled out into a cavernous, pillared hall formed entirely of polished volcanic glass. The floor was buried in ankle-deep, powdery grey ash that plumed into the air with every footstep, suffocating the crimson light. The temperature plummeted, stripping the heat from their lungs, and the ever-present heartbeat of the Tower grew muffled, as if buried under deep earth.

Drifting between the massive glass pillars were Ash Wraiths.

They were spectral abominations—the translucent, tortured spirits of Drak’thar’s ancient defenders. Their eyes were hollow voids of absolute darkness. They carried no weapons; their mere touch bypassed physical armor, violently siphoning the kinetic heat and life force from anyone they grazed.

"Wraiths!" Nathan shouted, his [Hunter’s Insight] tracking their erratic, phasing trajectories through the stone pillars. "Kinetic weapons are useless! Elemental damage only! Elise, Dillon—you have the floor! Torren, build a perimeter!"

The army instantly reformatted. Silver Drake’s tanks locked their shields outward, using their mana barriers to gently deflect the incorporeal threats rather than block them. Red Dragon’s pyromancers quickly realized their fire couldn’t burn a ghost, so they used it to herd them—erecting localized walls of flame between the pillars to funnel the Wraiths into fatal chokepoints.

Elise stepped into the center of the kill zone. At her command, the Frost Golem slammed both fists into the ash. Absolute zero rushed outward, flash-freezing the powdery floor into solid permafrost. The Wraiths that drifted into the frozen zone instantly slowed down, their spectral energy violently disrupted by the extreme cold. Elise raised her staff, chaining [Glacial Lances] through their lethargic forms. CRRRRACK. The spears froze the spirits solid for a microsecond before they shattered into harmless, dissipating vapor.

Dillon and Cloudy turned the right flank into a thunderstorm. Cloudy’s static discharge actively destabilized the Wraiths’ ethereal forms, causing them to violently flicker and solidify just long enough for Dillon to act. Blurring through the ash via [Flash Step], he brought [Thunder Edge] down again and again. KRAK-BOOOOOM. The high voltage grounded out the spirits, erasing them from the air.

Through the chaos, Kuro was a phantom. Because her daggers were forged from pure shadow magic, they possessed the unique ability to sever ethereal tethers. She slipped seamlessly through the dark, burying [Assassinate] strikes into the hollow chests of the Wraiths. Shink. They dissolved with silent, agonizing screams.

But the swarm was relentless. A Silver Drake mage misstepped, and a Wraith phased cleanly through her shield wall and directly through her sternum. She collapsed instantly, gasping for air, her skin turning a sickly, frostbitten blue. Her squad dragged her back, forcing a concentrated mana restorative down her throat. She would live, but her mana channels were completely frozen. She was effectively out of the fight.

Nathan kept his bow lowered, firing only to save a life. The Capacitor sat at fifty percent, the compression charms actively fighting to stretch his reserves. Every [Mana Arrow] cost him, and he refused to burn out before the final floor. He let the elementals do the heavy lifting.

When the final Wraith evaporated under Dillon’s blade, the hall fell deathly quiet. Floor 7 was clear.

Floor 8 was a sweltering crucible of magma and iron.

The chamber operated as a massive, subterranean forge. Canals of aggressively bubbling magma carved through the floor, bathing the room in a blinding, aggressive orange light. Massive obsidian anvils dotted the landscape. The ambient heat was so catastrophic that the Winterhart cloaks visibly flickered, struggling to regulate their body temperatures.

Making the forge their home were the Forge Drakes.

They dwarfed the terrestrial drakes of the upper floors, measuring twenty-five feet long and built like armored tanks. Their scales literally glowed from the inside out, and instead of typical fire, they exhaled streams of hyper-dense, molten slag. They were terrifyingly intelligent, utilizing the massive anvils for cover and coordinating flanking maneuvers.
