Nathan woke to the soft weight of three bunnies on his chest.
The first pale light of dawn was just beginning to seep through the apartment’s single window, casting long shadows across the rumpled blankets. Mirko was curled in her usual spot near his shoulder, her green fur rising and falling with the steady rhythm of sleep. Kuro was a silent black shape near the foot of the bed, her white mask-markings catching the faint light. And between them, a new presence—Shiro, her orange-red fur and dark tiger stripes a vivid contrast against the pale sheets, her tiny horn-tufts twitching as she dreamed.
Three summons. Three embers of a fire that had refused to die.
Nathan lay still for a moment, feeling the quiet hum of the mental link that bound them all together. Mirko’s warmth, fierce and steady. Kuro’s vigilance, a blade held ready even in sleep. And Shiro—new, formal, regal, her draconic fire a constant low thrum at the edge of his awareness. She had been in this world for only a handful of days, and already her presence felt as natural as breathing.
But the weight on his chest wasn’t just his summons. It was the weight of everything still to come.
He slipped out of bed carefully, transferring the three bunnies to the warm spot he’d left behind. They rearranged themselves with small, sleepy sounds—Mirko’s ears twitching, Kuro’s tail flicking, Shiro’s horn-tufts brushing against the pillow—and then settled back into sleep. Nathan pulled on his clothes and sat at the table, his interface flickering to life before him.
[Inventory]
· Empress’s Heartseed (Legendary Material) — A seed of immense life energy.
· Corrupted Wyrm Hearts (Legendary Material) x2 — Twisted by dark magic.
· Imoogi Scale (Rare Material) — Pulses with faint paralytic energy.
· Vorlagrath’s Scale (Mythic Material) — A single scale from the Last King. Still warm.
Four items. The last unclaimed rewards from the long climb from the Tower of Ash to the Fallen Piece of Drak’thar. He’d sold the rest—the Storm Eye, the Furnace Core, the Crimson Lord’s Heart—to fund their expedition and keep Lucy fed. But these four he’d kept. These four he’d been waiting to use.
Today, he decided. Today he would put them to use.

The TCA forge wing smelled of metal and ozone, same as always. Vex was hunched over her workbench when Nathan arrived, Ember the Molten Sprite circling her shoulders in lazy spirals of orange and gold. The rhythmic clang of her hammer paused when she heard his footsteps.
"Back again? You know, most Climbers visit their smith once every few months. You’re here every other week. I’m starting to think you just like my company." She pushed up her goggles, her scarred face splitting into a sardonic grin. Then she saw the three bunnies on Nathan’s shoulders and head. "Three of them now. You’re collecting them like trading cards."
"Good morning to you too, Vex."
"Don’t ’good morning’ me. I’ve been up since four working on a commission for a Silver Drake Climber who wants a sword that ’sings with the voice of a winter wolf.’ I don’t even know what that means." She set down her hammer. "What do you need?"
Nathan spread the materials across her workbench. The two Corrupted Wyrm Hearts pulsed with dark, viscous energy, their surfaces swirling with the sickly purple-black of the Court’s mutation magic. The Imoogi Scale lay beside them, its dark surface gleaming with faint paralytic energy, the same energy that had nearly frozen the primary assault group in their tracks. And finally, Vorlagrath’s Scale—crimson and gold, still warm to the touch, still carrying the faint, lingering echo of a dying king’s heartbeat.
Vex stared at the spread. Her usual sarcasm faded. She picked up Vorlagrath’s Scale with the reverence of a craftswoman handling something sacred.
"This is from the Last King. I can feel the old dragon’s fire in it. This is Mythic-grade material, Cross. The kind of material most smiths go their entire careers without touching." She set it down gently. "What do you want me to do with it?"
Nathan gestured to Mirko and Kuro, who shifted to humanoid form beside him—Mirko’s D-Rank armor gleaming, Kuro’s silver-threaded bodysuit catching the forge-light. Shiro remained in bunny form on his head, her golden eyes watching with calm interest.
"A heavy sword for Mirko. She’s been using the same steel blade since her first evolution. She’s a D-Rank Knight now, and she’s approaching another evolution. She needs a weapon that can channel her abilities—something that can hold [Aegis Strike] without straining, something with reach and weight and presence. Something worthy of her."
Mirko’s ears perked up. "Hmph! A new sword! Forged from a dragon’s scale! This Knight approves! I have been carrying this humble blade since my earliest days, and while it has served me well, I have long felt that my magnificence deserved a more... magnificent weapon!"
’You have only mentioned it seventeen times,’ Kuro observed.
"That is because it bears repeating!"
"And for Kuro," Nathan continued, ignoring them, "a new dagger—or daggers. Something that incorporates the Imoogi Scale’s paralytic property. She’s a D-Rank Assassin now. Her old daggers are shadow-forged and reliable, but they don’t carry any additional effects. The paralytic energy would give her strikes an extra edge—slow the target, make the kill cleaner."
Kuro inclined her head. ’A paralytic effect would increase my combat efficiency by approximately thirty percent against targets that are not immune. It is a logical upgrade.’
"You could just say ’thank you,’" Dillon’s voice came from the doorway. He’d followed Nathan to the forge, Cloudy coiled around his shoulders and crackling with curiosity. "But no, it’s always ’logical upgrade’ and ’combat efficiency.’ You’re the least sentimental person I’ve ever met."
’I am not a person. I am a summon. Sentiment is inefficient.’
"You’re also a terrible liar."
’I am an excellent liar. You simply lack the perception to detect my deceptions.’
Vex ignored the bickering and examined the materials with a professional eye. "The wyrm hearts are corrupted. The Court’s mutation magic is all over them—dark energy, twisted life force, the works. But the core is still wyrm-fire. I can burn out the corruption. It’ll take a day or two, but the flame that’s left will be pure. I can split the hearts between the weapons—give the sword a flame edge that activates on command, give the dagger a paralytic bite from the Imoogi Scale. The dragon scale..." She picked it up again, turning it over in her scarred fingers. "This is the core piece. Mythic-grade. I’ll need to build the sword around it, not just incorporate it. That takes time. A week, maybe two."
"We might not have two weeks. The Cleansing—"
"I know." Vex’s expression was serious. "I’ll work fast. I don’t sleep much anyway." She paused. "What about the Heartseed? I saw it in your inventory when you came in. That’s not a forging material. That’s biological. Alchemical. You need someone who specializes in permanent enhancement—someone who can turn a seed of life energy into something that changes a Climber’s core attributes."
Nathan nodded. "Do you know anyone?"
Vex was already scribbling on a scrap of paper. "Dr. Evelyn Wren. TCA Research Division. She’s an old friend—we climbed together back in the day, before she retired to alchemy. She’s the best biological enhancement specialist in the capital. If anyone can do something with that Heartseed, it’s her." She handed Nathan the address. "Tell her I sent you. And don’t let her talk you into any experimental procedures without reading the fine print. She’s brilliant, but she’s also... enthusiastic."
"That’s concerning."
"She once turned a man’s hair blue for six months because he volunteered for a pigment trial. He was fine. The hair was very blue." Vex shrugged. "Just read the fine print."
