The TCA Research Division was a sterile building of white walls and humming mana-sensors, a stark contrast to the industrial chaos of the forge wing. Nathan walked through hallways lined with laboratories, past Climbers in white coats and summons of every description—analytical constructs, observation sprites, a floating eye that tracked his movement with unsettling precision. Shiro rode on his head, her golden eyes cataloging everything with quiet intensity. Mirko and Kuro had returned to their small forms on his shoulders.
"Dr. Evelyn Wren," Nathan said to the receptionist. "I have a referral from Vex, the Grandmaster of Smithing."
The receptionist’s eyebrows rose slightly at Vex’s name, but she directed him to Laboratory 7 without comment.
Dr. Wren was a woman in her sixties with grey-streaked hair pulled back in a practical bun and sharp, curious eyes that seemed to miss nothing. Her laboratory was a controlled chaos of bubbling vials, glowing crystals, and mana-measurement instruments. Her summon, a Luminescent Spriteswarm, drifted around her like a cloud of living stars—hundreds of tiny, glowing motes that pulsed with soft, ever-changing light.
"Nathan Cross. The Bunny King himself." Dr. Wren’s voice was warm but brisk, the voice of someone who had too much work to do and not enough time to do it. "Vex comm’d ahead. Said you had something interesting for me. Something biological."
Nathan produced the Empress’s Heartseed from his inventory. The seed materialized in his palm—a pulsing sphere of deep green light, shot through with veins of gold. It was warm to the touch, and Nathan could feel the life energy humming within it, the same energy that had animated the Verdant Empress and her entire corrupted garden.
Dr. Wren’s eyes widened. She took the Heartseed with the careful reverence of a scholar handling a priceless artifact. "Do you know what this is? This is a Verdant Empress’s heart—a seed of pure, undiluted life energy. The Empress was a High Class boss, wasn’t she? Plant-type. Regenerative capabilities. This seed contains enough life energy to grow an entire ecosystem. Properly refined, it could do almost anything." She looked at Nathan over her glasses. "What’s your magical aptitude, young man?"
"F-Rank."
Dr. Wren’s expression didn’t change, but something flickered in her eyes—surprise, quickly suppressed. "F-Rank. And you’ve climbed an Elite Class Tower. Killed a true dragon. With F-Rank aptitude." She set down the Heartseed and studied Nathan with new interest. "That’s not supposed to be possible. The mana drain alone should have killed you on the upper floors."
"I have good gear. And good people."
"Evidently." Dr. Wren picked up the Heartseed again, turning it over in her fingers. The Spriteswarm drifted closer, its tiny motes pulsing with curiosity. "This seed has the properties you’d need for a permanent aptitude enhancement. The life energy can be refined into a formula that restructures mana channels—makes them wider, more efficient, more receptive to ambient mana. It could raise your aptitude by one rank. Maybe two."
Nathan felt his heart stop. "Permanently?"
"Permanently. The changes would be biological, not magical. Your mana channels would be physically altered to handle higher throughput. No more counting every arrow. No more draining yourself dry on [Focus Shots]. No more relying on capacitors and rings to compensate for a ceiling you can’t break." She met his eyes. "But it will take time. The refinement process is delicate—the formula needs to be tailored to your specific mana signature, and the Heartseed’s energy has to be stabilized with additional catalysts. Weeks, at minimum. Possibly a month. And I’ll need materials—catalysts, stabilizers, a mana-saturated environment for the refinement. It won’t be ready before this Cleansing the TCA’s been warning everyone about."
Nathan absorbed this. A permanent solution to the F-Rank ceiling. The one limitation he’d never been able to overcome through strategy or equipment or sheer stubborn determination. The thing that had held him back in every major fight since the Tower of Ash. And it was within reach—but not within time.
"Start anyway," he said. "Whatever materials you need, I’ll get them. Whatever it costs, I’ll pay it. When the Cleansing is over—when we’ve stopped the Court—I’ll come back. And I’ll be ready."
Dr. Wren studied him for a long moment. Then she nodded. "I’ll begin the preliminary refinement today. The Heartseed is stable enough to work with. I’ll send you a list of the materials I need within the week." She extended her hand. "Good luck with the Cleansing, Climber Cross. Come back alive. It would be a shame to waste a Heartseed this rare on someone who isn’t around to use it."
Nathan shook her hand. "I intend to."

Walking back through the TCA halls, Shiro shifted to humanoid form and walked beside Nathan. Her golden eyes were thoughtful, her expression carrying the same regal composure she’d maintained since her summoning.
"Young Lord. The alchemist spoke of permanent enhancement. Of breaking the ceiling that has constrained you since your summoning." She paused, choosing her words with the same deliberate precision she brought to everything. "This is significant. Your F-Rank aptitude has been the one limitation you could not overcome through strategy or equipment. You have compensated with intelligence, with preparation, with the support of your party. But the ceiling has always been there. If the Heartseed can truly change that..."
"Then everything changes." Nathan’s voice was quiet but intense. "The mana ceiling disappears. I can fight without counting every arrow. I can charge [Focus Shots] without draining myself dry. I can contribute to battles the way I’m supposed to—not just as a coordinator, but as a full combatant."
"Then we ensure you survive the Cleansing. We ensure the party survives. And when the battle is over, we return. We claim the refinement. And you become what you were always meant to be." Shiro’s golden eyes met his. "The Young Lord who carries the ember. The fire that refuses to die. Vorlagrath’s legacy. My summoner. My lord."
’She’s right,’ Mirko added through the link, her mental voice fierce with pride. ’You have always been more than your aptitude. The F-Rank does not define you. It never has. It is merely a number. Your strategies, your leadership, your stubborn refusal to give up—these are what make you who you are. The refinement will simply make your body match your spirit.’
’It will be... satisfying... to see the ceiling broken,’ Kuro observed, her cool voice carrying a rare note of personal investment. ’I have watched you struggle against your limits since the Whispering Dark. You have never complained. You have never used it as an excuse. You have simply found ways to win despite it. That is commendable. But commendation does not make the limitation vanish. The refinement will.’
Nathan felt the corner of his mouth twitch. "You’re all getting sentimental."
’I am not sentimental,’ Kuro said. ’I am stating facts.’
"Hmph! I am extremely sentimental! It is one of my best qualities!" Mirko declared.
"The Young Lord inspires sentiment," Shiro added, her formal tone somehow making the statement even more sincere. "It is a leader’s prerogative."

Nathan returned to Celestial Peak in the late afternoon. The party was gathered in the common room—Garrett on one of the worn couches, Volcan propped beside him, Red sprawled at his feet. Dillon in an armchair, Cloudy coiled around his shoulders and dozing. Elise near the window, Aurora’s Heart gleaming softly in the afternoon light, the Frost Golem dismissed. They looked up when Nathan entered, their expressions expectant.
"Vex is forging weapons for Mirko and Kuro," Nathan announced without preamble. "A heavy sword for Mirko, forged from Vorlagrath’s scale and the purified wyrm hearts—flame-edged, built to channel her Knight abilities. New daggers for Kuro, incorporating the Imoogi Scale’s paralytic property. They’ll be ready in a week or two."
Garrett nodded slowly. "Good. They’ve both earned upgrades."
"And I met an alchemist. Dr. Evelyn Wren. Vex sent me to her." Nathan paused. "She examined the Empress’s Heartseed. She says it has the properties to create a formula that permanently increases magical aptitude. One rank. Maybe two."
The room went still.
"Permanently?" Garrett’s voice was hushed.
"Permanently. Biological changes to my mana channels. But it won’t be ready for the Cleansing. The refinement might take weeks, and she needs additional materials. We’ll have to fight this battle with what we have."
"Then we fight with what we have," Elise said. Her voice was calm, steady. "We’ve done it before. The Tower of Ash. The Iron Horde. The Whispering Dark. Drak’thar. Every time, you’ve fought at F-Rank. Every time, you’ve found a way to win. The Cleansing will be no different."
Dillon cracked a grin. "And after the Cleansing, you come back with E-Rank or D-Rank aptitude and start blasting [Focus Shots] like they’re [Mana Arrows]. The Court won’t know what hit them."
"Assuming the refinement works," Nathan said.
"It’ll work. Dr. Wren’s got a reputation. Vex wouldn’t have sent you to her if she wasn’t the best."
Shiro stepped forward, her golden eyes sweeping the room. "The Young Lord has carried the ember across six High Class Towers and an Elite Class expedition. He has faced wyrms and wraiths and corrupted abominations. He has fought at a disadvantage that would have broken lesser Climbers, and he has never wavered. The refinement will simply allow his body to match the fire that already burns within him." She pressed one fist to her chest. "Until then, we fight. Together. As we have always done."
Mirko drew her sword—the old steel blade that had served her since her first evolution, soon to be replaced by something greater. "Hmph! Well said, my junior! The Cleansing will break against us like waves against a cliff! We are the party that killed Vorlagrath! We are the party that saved Ashwick! We are the party that will not be stopped!"
’That was almost a speech,’ Kuro observed.
"It was a speech! A very good one!"
’It was adequate.’
"It was INSPIRING!"
