My Overpowered Bunny Girls

Chapter 147: The Cleansing Begins (3)

Garrett and Red stood like a brick wall on the north side. Garrett swung his mace in a steady rhythm. Krak-boom, krak-boom. Every hit blew away a monster. Red used its thick wool to block the attacks that slipped past. Garrett didn’t have fancy magic. He just had a great weapon and the stubborn willpower to never step back. It was enough.

Dillon and Cloudy ruled the sky. The snake shot wild electricity into the bat swarms. Crackle-boom. Dozens fell out of the air, roasted. Dillon zoomed across the sky on his lightning boots, slicing through the rest with his electric sword. "Cloudy, to the left! They’re diving at the people!"

Cloudy spun fast, shooting a thick bolt of lightning. The bats exploded high above the escape path, safe from the runners. Dillon grinned. "Good girl. Let’s fry the rest."

Elise and the Frost Golem turned the south side into an ice rink. She shot huge ice spears right through the lava snakes, freezing them solid. The giant ice golem stepped on the fiery hounds, crushing them with cold, heavy fists. Elise’s magic staff glowed bright as she fired explosive bolts into the biggest crowds. Boom-boom-boom.

But they just kept coming. And far in the distance, more red dots blinked on the map. More Towers were breaking. More of the world was burning.

Nathan stood in the center of the village, his bow in his hand, his three bunnies standing tall around him. The fight here was finally slowing down. The monsters were thinning out. Everyone had escaped to the hills. On the horizon, he could see the big TCA team finally arriving. They had saved this village. Hundreds of people were alive because of them.

But the Cleansing wasn’t over.

Valerie’s voice crackled on his radio, sounding grim. "We just got bad news. The Court’s agents have been seen at the broken Towers. They aren’t just starting this—they are leading the monsters. They are steering them right into towns to kill as many people as possible. We have twelve bad guys spotted on our side alone."

Nathan gripped Moonlight tighter. "Is Clamour there?"

"We don’t know yet. But he’s out there. Somewhere."

The radio went quiet. Nathan looked at the burning sky, thinking of all the red dots on the map and all the people still running for their lives.

"We hold our ground here," he said to his team. "We protect this spot. And when the TCA takes over, we move to the next Tower. And the next. We don’t stop until this is over."

---

Nathan stood at the periphery of the scorched earth, watching the last of the evacuation transports rumble toward the distant foothills. Their open beds were packed shoulder to shoulder with the exhausted, terrified remnants of Thornfield’s population. The TCA containment team had finally breached the perimeter—three full squads of Climbers clad in silver and blue, their summons already fanning out around the venting Tower to begin the excruciating, highly volatile work of stabilization. The immediate crisis had broken. The village was secure.

But the sky was still a bruised, apocalyptic red.

Nathan traced the eastern horizon, where a dozen more Tower Collapses painted the low-hanging clouds in sweeping streaks of blood and ash. The Cleansing was not a single, contained skirmish. It was a war of attrition being waged across a thousand miles of the outer territories. Every hour that ticked by without intervention meant more farmland reduced to cinders, more lives extinguished, and more of the Nemesis Court’s twisted vision of a "purified" world hardening into reality.

His party was scattered across the ruined village square, quietly bleeding off the adrenaline. Garrett slumped heavily against a collapsed stone wall, Volcan propped beside him while Red’s armored wool slowly dissolved back into a soft, soot-stained fleece. Dillon was meticulously inspecting the mana-coils on his Storm Striders, Cloudy coiled in a tight, protective knot around his neck, emitting a low, subdued BZ-ZZT. Elise stood near the fractured stone of the village well, her staff planted like an anchor, the light from her circlet dim but unwavering. The Frost Golem loomed behind her like a jagged glacier, its crystalline body heavily chipped and scarred from the vanguard assault, but structurally sound.

His three summons remained in their base forms—Mirko perched vigilantly on his shoulder, Kuro nestled in the folds of his combat jacket, and Shiro seated with absolute, statuesque stillness atop his head. Through the humming ether of their mental link, Nathan felt the heavy drag of their exhaustion, interwoven with a quiet, undeniable pride. They had pulled hundreds of souls from the fire today. But the fire was still spreading.

The comm crystal at his collar flared with sharp static. "Cross. Report."

"Thornfield is secured. Evacuation transports are away, and the TCA containment squad has the grid. We are ready for reassignment."

"Acknowledged. I have another High Class Tower destabilizing in the eastern ridges—Greyvale. Population six hundred. TCA containment won’t break through for at least two hours. You’re the closest active unit. Can you intercept?"

"We’re moving."

Nathan terminated the link and turned to his bruised vanguard. "Greyvale. Two hours out. We march now."

Garrett groaned, the leather of his gauntlets creaking as he forced himself upright. "No rest for the righteous."

"The righteous are too busy to bleed," Dillon muttered, rolling his neck until the vertebrae popped. "Let’s go save another zip code."

The party formed up and began the long march east.

The road to Greyvale was a ragged scar carved through burning farmland.

The outer regions had always been stark—rutted dirt paths, jagged rocky outcroppings, and stubborn stands of ironwood. But the Cleansing had warped the landscape into a necrotic wasteland. Plumes of oily black smoke rose from a dozen distant pyres. The earth itself shuddered with the constant, grinding vibration of destabilized dimensional rifts. Through the haze, Nathan could already see the monolithic black spire of Greyvale’s Tower, its obsidian surface fracturing and bleeding chaotic, crimson light into the atmosphere.

Old Marren had taken the transport west to ferry the last batch of wounded, leaving the party to advance on foot. It was agonizingly slow, but it was their only play.

They were three miles out when the Court tipped their hand.

The ambush sprang from the skeletal ruins of an abandoned farmstead. Nathan’s [Hunter’s Insight] flared a fraction of a second before the assault, isolating four distinct human mana signatures—each one polluted with the same heavy, sickening resonance he remembered from the Whispering Dark.

"Contacts! Court operatives! Four marks!"

The party shattered their formation a split second before the first mutated summon exploded from the rotting barn.

It might have been a wolf, once. Now it was an asymmetrical nightmare of bulging muscle, extra limbs, and pulsing, necrotic veins. Six multi-jointed legs tore up the scorched earth as it charged, its jaws splitting horizontally into a triple mandible lined with jagged, serrated bone. The Court’s mutation process hadn’t just augmented the predator; it had weaponized its biology.

"Garrett! Red! Intercept!"

Red met the charge, fleece violently hardening into a dense carapace. The mutated wolf slammed into the Mad-Sheep’s horns. KRAKK-THUD. The sheer kinetic transfer spider-webbed the dry earth beneath their hooves. Garrett pivoted, bringing Volcan down in a brutal, two-handed execution strike directly onto the wolf’s misshapen skull. KRAK-THOOOOOM!
