My Overpowered Bunny Girls

Chapter 146: The Cleansing Begins (2)

The truck sped past empty villages. Houses were dark. Suitcases lay dropped in the dirt. Toys were left in the streets. People were running for their lives.

Nathan watched the red sky and felt the heavy weight of the war. Clamour, Smithy, and the Pale Shepherd Lord were out there, pulling the strings. And back in the city, Dr. Wren was working on a potion that could break his magic limit—if he lived long enough to drink it.

’Master,’ Mirko said through the link. ’You are brooding. I can feel it.’

"I’m thinking."

’You are brooding while thinking. It is your signature. But we have faced worse than this. We beat a fire dragon and a giant bird. We survived the Crimson Lord. These monsters are nothing.’

’She is correct,’ Kuro added smoothly. ’The Court uses chaos and fear. We are not chaotic, and we are not afraid. We are ready.’

’The Young Lord carries the fire,’ Shiro said softly. ’The flame that never dies. The Court does not know what they have woken up. They will learn today.’

Nathan smiled just a little bit. "You’re all getting very good at giving pep talks."

’I learned from the best,’ Mirko said proudly. ’Myself. I am a great teacher.’

’You are an okay teacher,’ Kuro corrected her. ’But you are too loud.’

"Being loud is a valid way to teach!" Mirko yelled out loud.

Despite the red sky and the screaming sirens, Nathan felt ready.

The truck slammed to a stop at the edge of the zone. The world outside was pure fire.

The Tower was a giant black spike of stone, cracking open and bleeding red light. Monsters poured out of the bottom in a huge wave. Packs of Ember Hounds ran forward, dripping hot lava from their jaws. Flaming bats filled the sky, ready to explode when they hit the ground. Giant lava snakes swam through the dirt like it was water.

In the distance, the three villages were emptying out. People were running toward a safe spot in the hills. A small TCA team was trying to protect them, but their summons were badly hurt, and the Climbers looked ready to pass out. They were losing ground.

Nathan stepped out of the truck. The heavy heat hit his face. It felt just like Ashwick. He gripped his bow. His team stood ready behind him.

"Garrett, Red—take the north side. Protect the escape path. Do not let a single monster past you." Nathan’s voice was completely calm. He sounded like a leader who had done this a hundred times. "Dillon, Cloudy—take the sky. Kill those bats before they bomb the villagers. Elise, Frost Golem—take the south. Freeze the monsters. Build an ice wall between the Tower and the people."

"And us?" Mirko asked, shifting into her human form. She drew her sword, her pink eyes glowing.

"Mirko, Kuro, Shiro—with me. We’re going into the village. We find anyone left behind. We get them out. And we kill anything in our way."

"Hmph! Finally! A real battle!" Mirko cast her shield skill. A bright green dome wrapped around her. "This Knight has been waiting! The Court thinks they own the fire? We will show them how to burn!"

’The Young Lord has given his orders,’ Shiro said. She shifted into her human form. Her martial arts suit fit tightly, and her dragon-scale tattoos glowed hot. She dropped low, getting ready to launch herself forward. ’We will not fail him.’

Kuro didn’t say a word. She just pulled out her daggers and melted into the shadows.

The team split up. The fight was on.

The village was a nightmare of fire and screams.

Nathan led his bunnies through the burning streets, running past ruined homes and broken carts. Ember Hounds were everywhere, setting roofs on fire with their hot breath. The exploding bats dove from the sky, shaking the ground with loud booms. The villagers who couldn’t run were hiding in basements, shaking with fear.

"Mirko! Shield on that cellar! Protect them!" Nathan fired Moonlight fast. Thwip-thwip-thwip. Three magic arrows shot out, perfectly hitting three Hounds in the chest. His battery ring buzzed on his wrist. He was saving energy, but he had to shoot fast. Every arrow counted.

Mirko’s green shield expanded, covering a storm door where a dozen people were hiding. A fiery hound jumped at the dome and bounced off with a yelp. Mirko swung her heavy sword, chopping the monster in half. "Hmph! You will not touch them! They belong to this Knight! And I do not fail!"

Shiro moved like a golden rocket. Her dragon skill shot her through the streets so fast she left glowing copies of herself behind. She found a pack of Hounds cornering a family against a burning wall. She didn’t hesitate. She threw a heavy punch. Krak-BOOM. A ghostly dragon head burst from her fist, crushing the lead Hound and the two behind it. The family stared at her in shock.

"Run," Shiro ordered, her golden eyes flashing. "The escape route is to the north. Follow the green Knight. Do not stop. Do not look back."

They ran. Shiro spun around to face the next wave of teeth and fire.

Kuro slipped through the smoke like a ghost. Her invisibility let her walk right past the fighting. She found an old woman trapped under a heavy wooden beam in a broken house. Kuro’s dark daggers sliced through the wood in seconds. She dragged the woman out just before the roof caught fire.

’The north escape path is clear,’ Kuro reported through the link. ’But the south side is breaking. The TCA team is backing up.’

Nathan fired another arrow. Thwip. A bat exploded harmlessly high in the air. "Elise! How is the south side?"

Elise’s voice came through his earpiece. "The Frost Golem is holding on. I froze the main group, but more just keep coming. The Tower won’t stop spitting them out. We can only slow them down."

"Then slow them down as long as you can. Garrett—how is the north?"

"We’re good!" Garrett yelled. The sound of his explosive mace echoed through the radio. Krak-boom, krak-boom. "Red and I have the path locked down. The people are getting to the hills. But the Hounds are testing our sides. We can’t hold out forever."

"You don’t need to. Just until the big TCA team gets here."

Nathan pushed into the center of the village. The small TCA team was backed into a corner, making their last stand. Their leader was a tired woman holding her bleeding arm. She sighed with relief when she saw Nathan. "Climber Cross. Thank god. We’ve been fighting for three hours. The villagers are mostly out, but there are a few hiding in the east side."

"We’ll find them. Fall back to the hills. You’ve done enough."

The leader nodded and ran.

Nathan looked at his summons. "East side. Mirko, take the front. Shiro, watch the sides. Kuro, find the hiding spots. We clear the streets and save everyone."

They rushed forward into the smoke.

The battle raged for hours. The Tower kept bleeding magic. The monsters kept coming. But Nathan’s team did not break.
