My Overpowered Bunny Girls

Chapter 149: The Battered Road

Nathan lowered Moonlight, the bowstring humming as the tension bled out. His core ached; his mana reserves were hovering at thirty percent, and the Capacitor on his wrist was half-drained. The party was battered, drenched in sweat and soot, and Greyvale was still two agonizing hours away.

But they were breathing. And the Nemesis Court had just received a masterclass on why ambushing Nathan Cross was a fatal error in judgment.

"Status," he ordered, his voice cutting through the ringing silence.

"Cosmetic damage," Garrett grunted, running a heavily gauntleted hand over Red’s soot-stained wool. "Red took a kinetic hit, but the fleece held. We’re operational."

"Cloudy’s battery is running low, but she’s got some spark left," Dillon said, landing lightly on the scorched earth. "I’ve got maybe one more Thunder Edge before I start mainlining mana potions."

"I am stable," Elise affirmed. "The Frost Golem lost approximately twenty percent of its mass, but the ambient moisture will allow regeneration."

Mirko flicked the acidic blood from her blade before slamming it perfectly into its scabbard. "Hmph! I will grant these operatives marks for persistence! But persistence without overwhelming power is merely an annoyance! They cannot halt our advance!"

Shiro straightened her posture, pressing a bloodied fist to her heart. "The Young Lord’s enemies have finally stepped into the light. They will learn to fear the ember."

Nathan turned his gaze back to the monolithic, bleeding Tower of Greyvale in the distance. Hundreds of lives were still trapped in its shadow.

"We have a village to hold. Let’s move."

The party formed up and marched. Behind them, the ruins of the ambush dissolved into the drifting ash. Ahead of them, the Cleansing raged with apocalyptic fury. Clamour was still out there, moving pieces in the dark.

But so were they.

---

The road to Greyvale was a jagged, dead scar cutting through burning farmland. Above them, the sky was covered in sickly orange and deep red, glowing from the collapse of a dozen Towers. The light spread through the low clouds like blood in water.

The ground shook beneath their boots, a constant vibration caused by distant dimensional spires breaking apart and releasing monsters into the world. The air was thick with ash and the metallic smell of corrupted magic.

Nathan Cross walked at the absolute vanguard of his party, his grip white-knuckled around Moonlight. The Tyrant’s Eye swirled within the bow’s core, agitated and brilliant, but Nathan could feel the hollow, scraping ache in his own veins. His mana reserves hovered at a precarious forty percent. The Capacitor on his wrist was recharging with agonizing slowness, and the Leyline Ring thrummed constantly, struggling to replenish the vast energy he had burned at Thornfield. He could feel the familiar, crushing gravity of exhaustion pressing down on his shoulders—the bone-deep, marrow-draining fatigue of too many battles fought with no time to breathe.

But he didn’t stop. None of them did.

Behind him, his party marched in grim silence. Garrett carried Volcan over one heavily armored shoulder, the mace’s molten veins glowing with a faint, steady heat. Red walked beside him, the Mad-Sheep’s wool still hardened into armor, though its crimson plates were badly damaged from the farmstead ambush.

Dillon’s Storm Striders gave off occasional sparks as his internal battery ran dangerously low. Cloudy’s usually bright scales had also become dull and sluggish around his neck. Elise walked with her staff, using it like a walking stick. Behind her, the Frost Golem followed, its crystalline body noticeably smaller after the last battle.

It would eventually regenerate, but the constant fighting was slowly wearing all of them down.

His three summons rode in their base forms—Mirko perched on his right shoulder, Kuro folded into the shadows of his left, and Shiro seated with statuesque, regal stillness atop his head. Through the humming ether of their mental link, Nathan felt their profound exhaustion, perfectly counterbalanced by a quiet, feral determination. They had pulled Thornfield from the fire. They had shattered the Court’s ambush. They would save Greyvale, too.

Greyvale appeared on the horizon like a scene from hell. The town sat in a shallow valley, its simple wooden buildings and dirt roads slowly being overrun by a sea of twisted creatures. Above it, the Tower of Greyvale pierced the burning sky like a black, jagged fang. It was a High-Class spire, its obsidian surface cracked and leaking chaotic red dimensional energy.

Monsters poured from its base without stopping. Ember Hounds, Cinder Bats, Magma Serpents, and other massive winged creatures whose distorted shapes looked completely unnatural against the crimson sky.

The TCA containment squads were nowhere to be seen, and the civilian evacuation had barely begun. Nathan’s exhausted party was the only thing standing between Greyvale and complete destruction.

Nathan swept the valley with [Hunter’s Insight], his mind compartmentalizing the chaos into tactical data—enemy densities, optimal evacuation routes, and the structural choke points of the town’s crumbling architecture. "Standard siege formation. Garrett—northern perimeter. Anchor the primary evacuation route. You are the wall; nothing gets past you. Dillon—take the sky. Shred those bat swarms before they can carpet-bomb the fleeing civilians. Elise—southern approach. Flash-freeze the monster surge and build a glacial barrier between the Tower and the town square."

"And us?" Mirko asked, shifting instantly into her humanoid form. Her D-Rank sword cleared its scabbard with a sharp SHINK. Her pink eyes blazed, entirely overriding her fatigue. "Into the slaughter?"

"Into the town. We hunt for survivors. We secure their exit. We execute anything that gets in our way."

"Hmph! This Knight would expect absolutely nothing less!" Mirko activated [Impenetrable Fortress], the brilliant jade barrier erupting around her in a dome of kinetic force. "Let us teach these Court-spawned monstrosities the price of threatening the innocent!"

’The Young Lord has given our orders,’ Shiro projected, seamlessly shifting into her martial arts bodysuit. Her dragon-scale tattoos pulsed with contained, thermal fury, catching the ambient firelight. ’We will not fail him.’

Kuro offered no words. She merely uncrossed her daggers and melted effortlessly into the shadows of the falling ash.

The party scattered. Greyvale awaited.

The town square was a theater of absolute bedlam. Packs of Ember Hounds tore through the narrow streets, their molten jaws slavering liquid fire that ignited the wooden thatched roofs on contact. Cinder Bats dive-bombed from the smoke-choked canopy, their kinetic detonations rattling the foundations of the surviving structures. Semi-liquid Magma Serpents burst upward through the scorched cobblestones, undulating through the earth as if it were water.

And circling the Tower’s fractured peak like vultures over a fresh corpse were the Corrupted Drakes.

They were smaller than the Forge Drakes Nathan had faced in the Iron Horde—perhaps fifteen feet from snout to tail—but what they lacked in sheer mass they compensated for in sheer, biological wrongness. Their scales were the mottled hue of bruised, necrotic meat, heavily threaded with bulging purple veins that pulsed with the Court’s mutation magic. Malformed extra limbs sprouted from their torsos at horrific angles—vestigial wings, backwards-bending legs, and twitching, useless claws that existed only to testify to the cruelty of their architect. Their eyes were blown wide with manufactured madness, and their breath was not pure thermal fire, but a viscous, bubbling napalm that clung to the stone and ate through it like acid.

"Shiro! Clear the airspace!" Nathan roared over the din. "Bring the Drakes down before they can strafe the evacuation line!"

"Understood, Young Lord." Shiro’s golden eyes locked onto the nearest plunging Drake. [Dragon King’s Ascension] ignited, launching her skyward on a geyser of golden fire. Draconic afterimages trailed in her wake as she intercepted the beast mid-dive. She didn’t use a blast; she used her body as the weapon.

[Tyrant Dragon Fist] slammed directly into the creature’s skull. KRAK-THOOOOOM!

The spectral dragon’s maw manifested in a blinding flash, the concussive shockwave instantly caving in the drake’s malformed jaw. The beast’s neck snapped backward with a sickening crunch, and it spiraled lifelessly into the town square, dissolving into fading motes of corruption before it even hit the ground.

"The Corrupted Drakes possess high kinetic resilience, but they are structurally compromised!" Shiro called out, instantly pivoting mid-air to track her next target. "The mutation has destabilized their skeletal framework! Target the grafted limbs—the joints are critical failure points!"

Nathan grounded his stance and drew Moonlight. THWIP-THWIP-THWIP. The string hummed a lethal, rhythmic melody, each [Mana Arrow] tracking and piercing an Ember Hound’s core. The Capacitor on his wrist dipped to thirty percent. The Leyline Ring was screaming, burning hot against his skin. He was running on absolute fumes, drawing from the very bottom of his reserves, but he kept firing. Every release of the bowstring bought someone a heartbeat. Every shot mattered.

Across the square, Mirko’s [Impenetrable Fortress] expanded into a massive, protective hemisphere over the town’s subterranean storm shelter, where the panicked evacuation team was frantically loading the last stragglers onto a battered transport. A Magma Serpent lunged blindly at the barrier. CLANG-HISSSS. The creature bounced off the kinetic shield, its semi-liquid body splattering harmlessly. Mirko stepped through the barrier, her counter-stroke carving a perfect, deadly arc through its core.

"Hmph! You will not lay a single fang upon these people! They fall under MY protection! And this Knight does not fail!"
