Two streets over, Kuro materialized from the thick black smoke near a collapsed residential building. A family of four was pinned beneath a massive, burning support beam. Her shadow-forged daggers moved with terrifying, surgical precision, slicing cleanly through the load-bearing wood. She dragged them free—a mother, two weeping children, and a grandfather—seconds before the roof completely caved in.
’The northern evacuation route is clear. But the eastern district is being overrun. There are survivors in the chapel. The Court is directing the surge.’
Nathan’s blood turned to ice. "Where?"
’Three operatives. Positioned near the eastern gate. They are utilizing their summons to herd the monster tide directly toward the highest concentration of civilians.’
"Mirko—anchor the shelter! Do not let it fall! Shiro—finish the Drakes, then rendezvous at the eastern gate. Kuro—with me."
Nathan tore through the burning streets, Kuro gliding as a silent, lethal shadow at his flank. The eastern gate was a crumbling archway of weathered stone, and standing before it, orchestrating the massacre with cold, detached efficiency, were three figures cloaked in ash-grey robes.
The Court’s foot soldiers.
They were low-level operatives, but the abominations tethered to their summon marks were nightmares given physical form. The first controlled a Corrupted Giant Hawk, its wingspan eclipsing twenty feet. Its natural feathers had been entirely replaced by jagged, overlapping plates of bruised obsidian and sickly violet. Dozens of extra, erratic eyes dotted its skull, blinking independently as it circled above, shrieking tactical commands to the swarms of Cinder Bats.
The second operative anchored a Corrupted Giant Eye—a pulsating, gelatinous orb of pale, translucent flesh the size of a carriage. Its single, dilated pupil darted with erratic madness, surrounded by a writhing halo of dark, tentacled energy that lashed out at the cobblestones. It radiated nauseating waves of psychic static that made the air itself vibrate with vertigo.
The third operative commanded a Corrupted Rock Hound, its physical mass swollen to three times its natural limit. Its geological hide was deeply cracked, weeping viscous dark fluid from the fissures. Extra, malformed stone limbs sprouted from its shoulders and flanks, giving it the horrifying silhouette of a crushed, terrestrial spider.
"There!" the hawk’s master shrieked, pointing a gaunt finger directly at Nathan. "The Bunny King! Clamour promised he would come! Break him!"
The Giant Hawk folded its armored wings and dove like a falling meteor. Nathan threw himself into a brutal evasive roll, the sheer kinetic wind of its passage tearing at his cloak. He came up on one knee and fired Moonlight—THWIP—but the azure arrow deflected harmlessly off the creature’s reinforced, mutated plating.
"Dillon! I need you at the eastern gate! Giant Hawk—take its airspace!"
"On my way!" Dillon’s voice crackled through the static.
A heartbeat later, he blurred into the airspace above the gate on his Storm Striders, Cloudy spiraling in a tight coil around his arm. Her static discharge arced violently across the Giant Hawk’s plated wings. CRACKLE-KABOOM! The atmospheric shock forced the massive bird to bank sharply, its erratic eyes blinking in blind confusion. Dillon followed the opening, his [Thunder Edge] trailing a blinding arc of ozone as he carved deep across its flank. KRAK-ZAAAP! The hawk shrieked, its flight path destabilizing.
Elise arrived from the southern approach, the scarred Frost Golem lumbering heavily in her wake. She assessed the battlefield with clinical detachment, her eyes locking onto the pulsing orb of flesh. "Psychic static. Severe disorienting effect. I am disrupting the broadcast."
She raised Aurora’s Heart. [Glacial Lance] materialized in the air above her—denser than usual, blazing with trapped aurora light—and she released the construct. CRRRR-ACK!
The spear punched dead-center into the Giant Eye’s pupil. The creature convulsed violently as localized absolute-zero flash-froze its aqueous humor. The psychic static faltered instantly, the nauseating waves collapsing into erratic, harmless pulses. Seizing the opening, the Frost Golem charged forward, slamming its massive, frozen fists down onto the Eye’s writhing tentacles, pinning the abomination firmly to the frozen earth.
Garrett and Red met the Corrupted Rock Hound head-on. It was a geological nightmare, its extra stone limbs scrambling across the cobblestones with terrifying, unnatural speed. Red’s horns caught the kinetic brunt of its charge, the fleece fully hardening to absorb the impact. Garrett stepped into the pocket and brought Volcan down with a roar. KRAK-THUD!
The thermal pulse blasted a crater into its rocky hide, but the Hound didn’t stagger. It snapped its jaws at Garrett’s face, proving vastly denser than the monstrosities at the farmstead.
"Shiro! I need you on the Hound!" Nathan commanded.
Shiro landed beside Garrett in a localized pillar of golden flame, the dissolving ash of the final Corrupted Drake raining down behind her. Her golden eyes immediately swept the Rock Hound’s mutated anatomy, running a brutal, real-time diagnostic. "The structural integrity of the grafted limbs is completely compromised! The mutation process has heavily degraded the connective joints!"
She moved in a blur. [Tyrant Dragon Fist] detonated squarely against the Hound’s malformed front shoulder. KRAK-THOOOOOM! The concussive force found the micro-fractures in the stone. One of the massive extra limbs tore completely free from the socket, dissolving into dark motes before it hit the dirt. The Hound let out an earth-shaking howl of agony.
"Again! Break the foundation!" Garrett roared, swinging Volcan in a wide, sweeping arc.
Shiro struck in perfect, devastating tandem. Flame and brute kinetic fury. Impact and thermal eruption. The Hound’s geological hide cracked wider, glowing with superheated internal pressure. Another malformed limb sheared off. The creature stumbled, its center of gravity failing as its dark strength bled out onto the stones.
In the backline, Kuro materialized from the smoke directly behind the lead operative—the master of the hawk. Her hand snapped out. [Blind]. As the operative gasped, clutching his lightless eyes, [Assassinate] triggered. SHINK-SHINK! Both shadow-forged daggers drove flawlessly between his vertebrae. He collapsed without a single sound. Above them, the Giant Hawk, violently severed from its master’s tether, shrieked in sudden agony and rapidly dissolved into fading motes of ash.
The second operative—the master of the shattered Eye—dropped to her knees, raising her trembling hands as the Frost Golem’s shadow eclipsed her. "I yield! I yield!" Her summon collapsed into a puddle of frozen sludge, the psychic static dying completely. Elise wordlessly bound her wrists with a heavy, biting freezing charm.
The third operative—the master of the dying Hound—turned and bolted for the ruins. He didn’t make it ten feet. Shiro’s [Dragon King’s Ascension] caught him in a flash of golden light. She drove him brutally into the cobblestones, planting one foot firmly on his chest, her golden eyes blazing with the unforgiving judgment of a sovereign. "You will answer the Young Lord’s questions. Or you will be reduced to ash."
The operative was shockingly young—barely out of his teens, his face pale and slick with sweat beneath his grey hood. But his eyes burned with the glassy, absolute devotion of the truly indoctrinated. "The Cleansing is the Lord’s divine will. The new world will rise pure from the ashes of the old. You cannot halt the tide."
"Where is Clamour?" Nathan demanded, stepping forward, the tip of Moonlight resting inches from the boy’s throat.
"I don’t know! I’ve never stood in his presence! I’m just a soldier—one of hundreds! He’s out there, somewhere in the shadows, directing the eastern sector. That’s all I was given. I swear it to the Lord!"
Nathan studied the boy’s face. The raw terror was genuine. The fanatical rhetoric was just a shield, but beneath it, he was merely a child who had been weaponized by a promise of a ’new world.’ "You attacked a civilian settlement. You utilized bio-weapons to herd monsters toward families. Toward children."
"The weak must perish so the strong can rise. It is the natural, beautiful order of things."
Nathan’s jaw tightened until the muscle jumped. He reversed his grip on Moonlight and drove the heavy alloy butt of the bow into the boy’s temple, knocking him instantly unconscious. He left him bound beside the others for the TCA interrogators. Two operatives captured. One dead. The Court’s eastern sector had just been blinded in Greyvale.
The dimensional venting of the Tower finally began to slow. The TCA containment team breached the perimeter—three heavy squads in silver-and-blue, their specialized summons rapidly deploying to stabilize the fractured spire. Greyvale was secured. Hundreds of villagers were successfully evacuated to the high ground. Dozens of mutated horrors had been reduced to ash.
But the physical toll on the party was rapidly approaching critical mass.
Nathan sat heavily on the cracked stone steps of the collapsed chapel, Moonlight resting across his knees. His mana reserves were hovering at a terrifying fifteen percent. The Capacitor on his wrist was a hollow shell. The Leyline Ring offered only a faint, flickering hum against his skin. His muscles burned with lactic acid, and his bones ached in a way he hadn’t experienced since the nightmare of the Whispering Dark.
His three summons were curled tightly around him in their base forms. Mirko rested on his shoulder, her pink eyes half-closed, her ears drooping. Kuro was a silent, heavy weight inside his jacket. Shiro rested on his knee, her golden eyes dim but relentlessly watchful. Through the mental link, he could feel the depths of their exhaustion—and the quiet, fierce, unyielding pride that kept their hearts beating. They had saved another village. They had dismantled another Court cell.
Garrett was meticulously inspecting the buckles of his armor, his movements sluggish and deliberate. Red’s wool was heavily scorched, the crimson plates refusing to fully harden, leaving patches of raw fleece exposed. "Volcan’s core is still stable. Red is running on empty, but he’ll keep marching. So will I."
Dillon was slumped hard against a soot-stained wall, Cloudy coiled limply in his lap. "I’m tapped out of Thunder Edge. I could maybe force one more if it means life or death, but that’s it. Cloudy needs a deep ambient recharge, and she’s not getting one out here."
Elise was reviewing the tactical readouts on her holographic interface, her expression an unreadable mask of pure pragmatism. The Frost Golem had shed another foot of its crystalline mass, its edges rounded and dull. "The Frost Golem is currently operating at sixty percent effectiveness. My personal mana reserves are stable, but if we are forced into another major, prolonged engagement without an REM cycle, I will be forced to fight highly conservatively."
"We’ve pulled two villages back from the brink," Garrett rumbled quietly, looking at the burning horizon. "Thornfield. Greyvale. That’s hundreds of lives. Maybe a thousand, total. But the Cleansing hasn’t stopped. There are dozens more Towers collapsing out there. Thousands more people drowning in it. We can’t save them all, Nathan."
"We save who we can reach," Nathan said, his voice rough. "That’s all anyone can do."
Valerie’s voice crackled through the comm, the audio thick with static and heavy with administrative exhaustion. "Cross. Give me your status."
