The capital was different now.
Nathan noticed it the moment the transport crossed the city limits—the same broad streets, the same mana-powered buses, the same buildings rising toward the red-streaked sky. But the atmosphere had shifted.
The tension that had gripped the city during the Cleansing was gone, replaced by something quieter. Something almost like relief. The fires were out. The Towers were stable. The Court was broken.
The battle was over.
Nathan sat near the front of the transport, Moonlight resting across his knees, his three summons in their small forms around him. Mirko on his shoulder, Kuro in his jacket, Shiro on his head. Through the link, he could feel their quiet contentment—the same bone-deep weariness he felt, but softened by the knowledge that they had won. They had actually won.
The party was scattered through the transport. Garrett was asleep, Red sprawled across two seats and snoring. Dillon was staring out the window, Cloudy coiled around his neck, her scales dim but peaceful. Elise sat near the back, Aurora’s Heart planted before her, her expression quiet and thoughtful, her frost golem within her mark. Smithy sat apart, his Void Eel coiled in his lap, his grey robes replaced with simple civilian clothes.
They had all been through hell. And now they were going home.
The transport pulled up to the TCA headquarters, and Valerie was waiting for them.
She stood on the steps of the grand building, Boris at her side in his small form, her TUFF GRANNY mug steaming in her hand. Her combat tunic was torn and stained—she hadn’t changed since the fight with Fester—and her knuckles were still bandaged. But she was smiling.
"Nathan" Her voice carried across the plaza. "The Bunny King. The man who ended the Cleansing."
Nathan stepped off the transport, his party filing out behind him. "I... didn’t end it alone."
"No. But you were the tip of the spear." Valerie walked down the steps and clapped him on the shoulder with enough force to stagger him. "You and your party. All of you. The TCA owes you more than I can put into words."
She looked past him at the others—Garrett, Dillon, Elise, Smithy—and her expression softened. "Get inside. We’ve got a lot to talk about. But first—" She reached into her pocket and pulled out something small and plastic. A star-shaped nightlight.
"Lucy’s," she said quietly. "I grabbed it before the fight. Figured she’d want it back."
Nathan took the nightlight. It was scuffed and cracked, but it still worked—the faint glow flickering to life in his palm. "Wait, what? How? Why?."
Valerie’s jaw tightened. "Fester went after your apartment, Nathan. He went after Lucy. I stopped him, but the damage was done. The building’s been condemned."
Nathan’s blood ran cold. "Is Lucy—?"
"She’s fine. Mrs. Chen took her to a shelter the moment the sirens started. She’s been staying with Helena at the guild hall." Valerie met his eyes. "But your home is gone. The apartment’s been destroyed."
The words hit Nathan like a physical blow. The apartment. The cramped studio with the star-shaped nightlight and the perpetually burning toast. The place where Mirko had first curled up on the bed, where Kuro had first tolerated Lucy’s hugs, where Shiro had been summoned in a blaze of golden fire. The only home Lucy had ever known.
"I’m sorry," Valerie said quietly. "But I’m going to make it right."
---
The TCA’s main hall was a blur of activity—Climbers coming and going, officials coordinating recovery efforts, the constant hum of mana-powered equipment. Valerie led Nathan’s party to a private conference room on the upper floor, where Helena was waiting with Lucy.
The moment Nathan walked through the door, a small blur of motion crashed into him.
"NATHAN!"
Lucy’s arms wrapped around his waist with enough force to knock the breath out of him. Her face was pressed against his chest, and he could feel her trembling. He knelt down and held her, feeling the weight of everything she’d been through settle into that single, fierce hug.
"I’m okay," he said quietly. "I’m okay. I’m here."
"You took forever," Lucy mumbled into his shirt. "Mrs. Chen said you were fighting the bad people. Then the bad people came to our apartment and I had to go to the shelter and I was so scared and—"
"I know. I’m sorry. I’m here now."
Mirko hopped onto Lucy’s shoulder and pressed her warm fur against the girl’s cheek. ’The tiny human is safe. This Knight is relieved.’
Kuro curled around Lucy’s feet. ’She is uninjured. That is what matters.’
Shiro perched on Nathan’s head and looked down at Lucy with regal softness. "The Young Lord’s sister is strong. She endured. That is worthy of respect."
Lucy sniffled and looked up at the three summons. "I’m glad you’re all okay too."
Valerie cleared her throat. "I hate to interrupt, but we’ve got business to discuss. Lucy, why don’t you stay here with Helena while we talk? There’s food in the break room."
"Can I have toast?"
Helena smiled. "I think we can manage toast."
---
The conference room was quiet, the city’s hum muted by the thick walls. Nathan sat at the head of the table, his party arrayed around him. Valerie stood at the front, a holoscreen flickering behind her.
"First things first," she began. "The TCA has authorized a significant reward for your party’s role in ending the Cleansing. Each of you will receive a substantial monetary compensation—enough to live comfortably for years, if you’re smart about it. Additionally, your party has been formally recognized as a Hero Unit by the TCA. That comes with benefits: priority access to Tower expeditions, free equipment maintenance, and a monthly stipend."
Garrett blinked. "A Hero Unit? That’s... that’s a big deal."
"You earned it. You saved the outer regions. You captured Clamour and Morrigan. You killed Fester." Valerie paused. "Well, I killed Fester. But you softened him up."
"Valerie killed Fester?" Dillon asked.
"She did." Nathan looked at the Guild Master. "She was waiting at the apartment. Knew he’d come after Lucy."
Valerie’s expression was grim. "Fester was predictable. Once his power base collapsed, he needed to hit back at the person who took everything from him. The apartment was the obvious target." She paused. "Which brings me to the second thing. Housing."
She activated the holoscreen. An image of a building appeared—a modest but comfortable townhouse in a quiet district of the capital.
"The TCA owns several properties in the city. This one’s been sitting empty for months—the previous occupant retired to the outer regions. It’s got three bedrooms, a full kitchen, and a view of the eastern skyline. It’s yours if you want it."
Nathan stared at the image. Three bedrooms. A full kitchen. A view. It was more than he’d ever thought he’d be able to give Lucy.
"Valerie, I—"
"Don’t argue." Valerie raised a hand. "You’ve been living in a cramped studio with three magical summons and an eleven-year-old. You need space. Lucy needs space. And frankly, the TCA needs its Hero Unit to be well-rested and functional." She smiled. "Take the house, Nathan. You’ve earned it."
Nathan looked at the image for a long moment. Then he nodded. "Thank you. I’ll take it."
