The new house was bright and warm, with wide windows and soft carpets and a kitchen that didn’t overlap with the living room. Lucy ran from room to room, her eyes wide with wonder, claiming the largest bedroom before Nathan could object.
"This one’s mine! It’s got a window seat!" She threw herself onto the window seat and pressed her face against the glass. "I can see the whole city from up here!"
"Don’t fall out the window," Nathan said, but he was smiling.
Mirko, Kuro, and Shiro explored the house in their small forms, their presences humming with quiet satisfaction. Mirko claimed a spot on the sofa. Kuro found a dark corner near the window. Shiro perched on the highest shelf with regal dignity.
"This is a good home," Shiro said quietly.
"Yeah," Nathan said. "It is."
Elise was in the kitchen, making tea. She’d been quiet since the meeting, her expression thoughtful. Nathan joined her, leaning against the counter.
"You’ve been quiet," he said.
"I’ve been thinking." She poured two cups of tea and handed him one. "About everything. The Cleansing. Fester. The Shepherd. What comes next." She paused. "About us."
Nathan’s heart beat a little faster. "Us?"
Elise met his eyes. Her expression remained calm, though something gentler lingered beneath it, difficult to read. "The party! We’ve been through a lot together. The Colosseum. The Tower of Ash. Drak’thar. The Cleansing. You’ve seen me... us ... at my... our worst, and I’ve ... We’ve... seen you at yours."
She paused, her gaze drifting away for a moment before returning to him. "I... we... don’t know what the future holds. The Shepherd is still out there, and the Tower Worlds are waiting. There’ll probably be more things we can’t predict." A faint smile touched her lips. "But... I know I don’t want to face all of it alone."
She hesitated.
"And if you’re willing..." Her voice softened. "Maybe we could be... something more than... what we’ve been."
Nathan was quiet for a moment. Then he reached out and took her hand. "I... want that too."
Elise’s fingers tightened slightly around his. She didn’t answer immediately. Instead, she simply looked at their joined hands, a small, almost unreadable smile lingering on her lips.
"Then..." she murmured, "I suppose we’ll... find out what that means."
They stood there in the kitchen, the tea growing cold, the city humming outside the window.
---
The Celestial Peak guild hall was warm and familiar, its observatory dome catching the evening light as Nathan’s party gathered in Valerie’s office. The room hadn’t changed—Tower maps still covered the walls, artifacts still crowded the shelves, Boris still snored in his corner—but something in the atmosphere felt different now. The weight of the Cleansing had lifted. The guild was quiet, but it was a peaceful quiet. The quiet of recovery.
Valerie sat behind her cluttered desk, her TUFF GRANNY mug steaming, her scarred hands wrapped around it. The bandages on her knuckles had been replaced with fresh ones, but she moved with the same brisk confidence as always.
"Now that you’ve had a night to rest," she began, "let’s talk about what comes next."
The party was arrayed around her office—Garrett in an armchair with Red sprawled at his feet, Dillon on the windowsill with Cloudy coiled around his shoulders, Elise standing near the bookshelf with Aurora’s Heart planted before her. Smithy sat apart, near the door, his Void Eel drifting at his feet. Nathan’s three summons were in their small forms—Mirko on the armrest of Nathan’s chair, Kuro a black shape on the windowsill opposite Dillon, Shiro perched on a nearby shelf with regal stillness.
"We’ve been recognized as a Hero Unit," Nathan said. "What does that actually mean for us?"
"It means the guild gets priority access to Tower expeditions, and so do you." Valerie took a long sip from her mug. "The TCA’s been discussing it for years, but the Cleansing finally pushed them over the edge. There are Towers out there—beyond Elite Class—that haven’t been properly explored in decades. Tower Worlds. They’re not conventional climbs. They’re self-contained realities with their own rules, their own inhabitants, their own clear conditions. And the TCA wants parties like yours to start climbing them again."
Garrett sat up straighter. "Tower Worlds. I’ve heard about those. People say they’re like stepping into another dimension."
"They are." Valerie set down her mug. "Master Class and above. Beyond Elite, Towers stop being towers in the traditional sense. They become worlds—fragments of civilizations that existed before the Babel Towers fell. Each one has its own rules, its own dangers, and its own way of being cleared. Some require combat. Some require diplomacy. Some require solving a mystery or ending a conflict that’s been raging for centuries."
"And the TCA wants us to climb them?" Dillon asked.
"The TCA wants parties with experience. Parties that have faced the worst and survived." Valerie’s sharp eyes swept the room. "That’s you. You cleared an Elite Class Tower. You stopped the Cleansing. You’ve got skills and summons that most Climbers can only dream of. The Tower Worlds are dangerous, but they’re also the key to understanding what the Towers really are. Where they came from. And now what this Shepherd is planning."
Nathan felt his summons stir through the link. The Tower Worlds. The Shepherd’s origins. The Demi-Beasts’ fate. Everything they’d been chasing was waiting in those higher Towers.
"When do we start?" Nathan asked.
"Not yet." Valerie raised a hand. "You’re still recovering. The Cleansing took a toll on all of you—physically, mentally, emotionally. You need time to rest. To train. To prepare." She paused. "And there’s something else. Something I’ve been meaning to tell you."
She reached into her desk drawer and pulled out a small, carefully wrapped package. She slid it across the desk toward Nathan.
"This came for you while you were at the western front. From Dr. Wren."
Nathan unwrapped the package. Inside was a small vial of liquid—deep green, shot through with veins of gold. A note was tucked beside it.
Nathan—
The refinement is complete. Take this when you’re ready. It will be... intense. More intense than the primer. But it should push you the rest of the way. Thank You for giving me this opportunity to create this.
—Evelyn Wren
Nathan stared at the vial. The liquid pulsed with the same life energy as the Empress’s Heartseed, but it was more refined now. More focused. This was the full formula. The permanent aptitude enhancement.
"The full refinement," Elise said quietly. "She finished it."
"She did." Valerie’s expression was unreadable. "Nathan, before you take that, there are things you should know. The Tower Worlds—they’re not just challenges. They’re pieces of something bigger. If what you’ve shared with us is true then the Shepherd didn’t just destroy civilizations. He took them. Absorbed them into the Towers. The Tower Worlds are what’s left. And the higher you climb, the closer you get to understanding what he’s been building. What he’s been preparing for."
Nathan looked at the vial in his hands. The weight of the choice pressed down on him. This was more than just a power-up. This was the next step in the fight against the Shepherd.
"Thank you, Valerie." He tucked the vial carefully into his inventory. "I’ll take it when the time is right."
"Good." Valerie nodded. "For now, rest. Train. Settle into the new house. I’ll have Helena put together a briefing on the Tower Worlds—what we know, what to expect. But that can wait until you’re ready."
---
The new house was quiet in the early afternoon. Lucy was at school—her first day back since the Cleansing—and the only sounds were the soft hum of the city outside and the occasional crackle of Cloudy’s static as she explored the living room.
Nathan sat at the kitchen table, the vial of the refinement formula before him. His summons were arranged around the room—Mirko in humanoid form, polishing Dragon’s Fang with careful attention; Kuro cross-legged on the windowsill, her dark eyes fixed on the city beyond; Shiro standing near the door, her golden eyes watchful.
’You’re thinking about taking it,’ Mirko said, not looking up from her sword. ’I can feel it.’
"I’m thinking about it," Nathan admitted. "The primer pushed me from F-Rank to D-Rank thanks to the bunny girls system. This is the full formula. Wren said it would be intense."
’More intense than the primer?’ Kuro asked.
"Probably. The primer was just a catalyst. This is the real thing. The complete refinement." Nathan turned the vial over in his hands. The green-gold liquid caught the light. "If it works, I could jump another rank. D-Rank to C-Rank. Maybe higher."
Shiro pressed her fist to her chest. "The Young Lord has carried the F-Rank ceiling for so long. The refinement is a gift. But gifts can be dangerous."
"I know." Nathan stood. "I need to do this properly. Not alone. Not without preparation."
He moved to the center of the living room. The summons gathered around him—Mirko at his right, Kuro at his left, Shiro before him. Through the link, he felt their support, their readiness, their fierce determination to see him through whatever came next.
"If this goes wrong," Nathan said, "if the surge is too much—"
’It won’t go wrong,’ Mirko said firmly. ’You are the strongest person I know. You survived the primer. You’ll survive this.’
’We will be with you,’ Kuro added. ’Through all of it.’
"The Young Lord’s fire will not be extinguished," Shiro said. "We will ensure it."
Nathan uncorked the vial and drank.
